The S80 is Volvo's flagship luxury saloon. Its profile and stance are unmatched and its sophistication is uniquely Volvo. On offer from Nemith is this lovely triple black example with about one hundred miles on the odometer. Only from Nemith's Latham Auto Park, this new car is available at the price of a pre-owned.
The S80's stately exterior features easy body curves and a gentle roofline above the side windows' chrome perimeter. Chrome also tastefully adorns the signature Volvo grille, lower valance and rocker panels, breaking up the Black Stone paint scheme. This trim is perhaps most appropriately employed on the rear end, where it calmly enrobes factory dual exhaust tips, underlines supple tail light design and plainly spells out "V O L V O" across the trunk lip.
Opening the door to the S80 is accepting an invitation to driving indulgence. The inner rocker panel features a chrome line with "Volvo" interrupt. Four passengers enjoy ample rich black leather with heated seats. The fully powered driver’s seat memorizes three distinct configurations. A demure center console challenges object permanence with roll top cup holders and real wood inlay. The interior also sports aluminum trim on the door handles, instrument panel and steering wheel. Leather hugs the bolstered wheel with fingertip stereo/cruise controls. A center dashboard section houses a bright 7" LCD monitor. Instantly display a detailed record of fuel consumption, adjust the automatic temperature control or capitalize on RDS scanning technology with the AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo.
The S80 is in fact the official state car of His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden. Soft, smooth and straight, this sedan defines understated opulence. Why would an affluent American be seen in anything less?

Volvo reveals 400-hp twin-charged PHEV power for new XC90 [UPDATE]
Tue, 08 Jul 2014UPDATE: An earlier version of this post indicated that the larger of the conventional diesel engines was a five-cylinder. However all three powertrains announced for the upcoming new XC90 are actually four-cylinder engines. The text has been updated accordingly.
Volvo rolled in to new territory when it introduced the original XC90 back in 2002, creating its first SUV and one of its top-selling models. But that was 12 years ago. In the meantime it's followed up with the smaller XC60, but what the brand faithful and the industry at large have been looking forward to most is the arrival of the new XC90.
Previewed by the Concept XC Coupe at the Detroit Auto Show, the new XC90 is set to arrive later this year, but to keep us on our toes, the Swedish automaker has been steadily trickling out a stream of information and photos. Two months ago it gave us a glimpse inside the cabin, and last month it revealed its new infotainment system, but now Volvo has released details on the upcoming new XC90's powertrain.
Volvo Concept Estate hauls in great expectations [w/videos]
Wed, 05 Mar 2014You're looking at the third leg of Volvo's award-winning concept trilogy, the Concept Estate. Despite its banal name, this sweeping longroof showcar has our attention like few other cars at the Geneva Motor Show.
It's not just that we have a weakness for shooting brakes or Volvo's take on the genre in particular (we can see some P1800ES in this design). We just think this car is exceptionally well surfaced, with a fantastic stance and the sort of clean lines that are singularly appropriate of a Scandinavian design. We also appreciate the details that are expected to inform future production models, including the T-shaped headlamps, strong rear shoulders and floating grille mount. In fact, the vast majority of the Concept Estate's design idiom is expected to make it to showrooms in future models, starting with the long-overdue, second-generation XC90 crossover.
We hope - but don't expect - that attitude carries over to the interior, which has stunning, white leather, floating clamshell seats backed in plaid. If there's one cabin feature that's expected to make it to production, it's a derivative of the car's new infotainment system, which features a massive touchscreen with tablet-like gesture controls.
Volvo to build range-topping S90 sedan in China
Thu, 13 Nov 2014Volvo is furthering its deep ties in China by announcing a major expansion to its factory in Daqing that will equip the site to build its future S90 sedan. The automaker is promising to make the plant, "one of the most advanced car making facilities in China," according to its press release. Unfortunately, the company isn't specifying the amount being invested or how long the work will take.
Because the northeastern Chinese city of Daqing owns about 37 percent of the automaker, the location for the significant expansion isn't entirely surprising, especially since Geely owns a majority stake in the Swedish brand. The existing factory there employs about 700 people to build the original XC90 for the local market, but the upgrades will allow the plant to handle Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture modular platform.
To be fair, Volvo doesn't specifically call out the S80-replacing S90 by name in its announcement. However, it promises the first vehicle built in Daqing after the expansion will be a new premium sedan, and the upgrades will allow the plant to make "most innovative vehicles in its product range," and the range-topping sedan is widely expected to adopt the S90 moniker.
