Here we have a hard to find 1985 Volvo 240 Turbo with the very rare "Police and Taxi" package. Believed to have been a Scarborough, Maine Police Cruiser during the mid 1980's, we acquired this very special 240 four years ago from a local marque specialist who had owned the car since 1989. He had kept the car in dry, indoor storage for most of that time. Though we have thoroughly enjoyed owning and driving the car, we have found over the past year that we have just not been driving it enough to justify keeping. We would rather see it driven and enjoyed by a fellow Volvo enthusiast.

For those who don't know, the Police and Taxi package consisted of:

-Slightly taller, stiffer springs. (Similar spring rate to the standard Turbos, but rather than sitting lower the car actually sits slightly higher than a standard 240)
-Special upholstery with fabric centers surrounded by vinyl
-Rubber flooring mats in place of carpeting
-Larger, brighter dome light
-Power trunk release
-Goose neck lights on the B-Pillars for both driver and passenger. (The passenger side light needs a new switch)
-Billy club holders. (Driver's side is missing, but the passenger side is present)
-"Heavy Duty" automatic transmission
-Larger ball joints and tie rods (This is how they came from the factory, I do not know if the larger fittings are still present. I do know they are hard to come by)
-Fitting for a disposable plastic or vinyl "sheet" that could be unrolled from the parcel shelf to cover the back seat for those less than tidy unscrupulous passengers

This is one of the tightest driving 240's I've been in. It is also faster than any stock 240 turbo I've driven. The consensus is that something was done by Volvo to give these cars a little more oomph, but I could not determine exactly what that was. The car runs and drives very well. The transmission shifts beautifully, and seems far more adept at "holding" a gear when appropriate than other automatic 240s I've drien. The car is a blast to drive and always attracts attention from other enthusiasts. We have all service records since we've owned the car. Oil changes were done on time and the car has been well cared for in the 30k or so miles we've put on it. We only used 91 octane fuel. The car was just given an ignition tune up and recently passed Maine state inspection without issue. I do know that it is due for a timing belt change.

The body is overall solid, but there is some rust starting to creep in along the door bottoms and a few other isolated spots including the "butt cheeks" and fender lips. The car was repainted at some point to a good standard, but the paint is starting to show its age. There are the usual chips, dings, and imperfections you would expect from a car of this age. The car looks better than many 240s of this vintage, but it is not perfect. Please note that a few of the photos show the old grill with the Volvo logo removed. A turbo "egg-crate" grill has been installed which you'll see in other photos. The car is currently riding on the included steel wheels and snow tires. The Virgos pictured in some of the photos are included with the sale

The interior is in very good condition. The seats, door cards, headliner, and rubber floors are in great condition. The dash has the usual cracks and is currently covered by a dash mat. There is a basic, older shaft style radio in the lower cubby that works and doesn't work depending on it's mood. There are two speakers, one in each door, but only the passenger side works. We only really listen to MPBN, so this was adequate for our needs. The oil pressure gauge always reads 5 bar, which is likely a ground issue with the gauge or sender. The oil pressure light works fine. The heat is strong, but the blower motor is sometimes noisy.

Other known flaws include a small coolant leak from the radiator, and the power steering pump leaks a bit as well. (This 240 never had A/C, and features the hard to find "A/C-Delete" power steering bracket.) A new exhaust (Intermediate pipe, under axle pipe, muffler, and tailpipe) was recently installed after a large bump broke the old intermediate pipe, however it was installed quickly and, while solid, could use some adjust to make it fit properly. The power locks work, but the driver side rear door must be locked and unlocked manually in cold weather. When the outside temperature is below 15 or so degrees, the car will take a few tries to start. This is likely due to the control pressure regulator. When above 15 degrees the car starts instantly. As mentioned before, the body is solid, but there are some flaws. The undercarriage is in great condition.

A box of parts is included with the car, along with two sets of wheels and tires. 15 inch steel wheels with Hankook snow tires are currently mounted. (The snows have one, maybe two seasons left in them) A set of Virgos with summer tires is included with the car. (The tires are mismatched, though both pairs are Michelin brand tires.) Two of the summer tires are new, the other two are older, but have some life left in them.

I have described the car as best I can. More photos are available upon request. Remember this is a 29 year old car and it has it's share of flaws. Please look at the photos CAREFULLY and ask questions BEFORE bidding. The car is bing sold as is, where is. I ask that buyers with zero feedback please contact me before bidding. I would encourage anyone interested in the car to come see the it in person. Please feel free to contact me with any and all questions.

A $500 deposit is due within 48 hours of the auction ending. Full payment is due within 7 days. We do have a title for the car, but Maine does not issue titles on vehicles of this age, so it is in the previous owner's name. The car is being sold with a bill of sale only, but the title will be included to show a trail of ownership. If you have any specific questions on this please contact me.

Thank you, and good luck bidding!

2025 Volvo EX30 revealed: quick, cute EV at $36K

Wed, Jun 7 2023

MILAN — The Volvo EX30 seems like a relatively straightforward EV. But dig a little deeper and you'll find this electric crossover is kind of a big deal. Making its debut in Milan, Italy, on Wednesday, the 2025 EX30 is Volvo's smallest SUV, yet it's also the company's quickest production car ever — by a long shot. Priced from $36,145 including an $1,195 destination charge, the EX30 will be the least expensive model in Volvo's U.S. lineup when it arrives next year. It'll even spawn Volvo's first fully electric Cross Country offering, which we can't wait to see. The EX30's styling cues are pulled straight from the larger EX90 electric SUV, giving it a tough-li'l-guy vibe that's both cute and purposeful. I love the pronounced wheel arches and the two-tone look. You can totally see how, with more ground clearance and some cladding, this EV will easily morph into the EX30 Cross Country that's coming next year. At 166.7 inches long, 72.3 inches wide and 61.1 inches tall, the EX30 is seriously small — about the same size as a Hyundai Kona — giving it a healthy amount of daylight from Volvo's larger, more expensive XC40 Recharge. The upright dimensions will no doubt help with headroom for front and rear passengers, and Volvo says there's 31.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which is good but not great for this class. Step inside the EX30 and the first thing you'll notice is that the SUV's digital real estate is limited to a single central screen, powered by Google software. Absolutely everything looks to be buried in the screen — except for things like the wiper controls, thank goodness — but I'm hopeful that Volvo learned from Tesla's mistakes and keeps the control layout relatively simple. There seems to be a fixed row of climate control icons along the bottom of the vertical display, at least. Five different ambient lighting themes will be offered, which shift in color, "adding a sense of calm," according to Volvo. In typical Scandinavian fashion, the EX30's cabin is super handsome, crafted with sustainable materials that look and feel premium. When it arrives in the U.S., the EX30 will be offered with two powertrain options, both of which rely on a 69-kilowatt-hour cobalt-lithium-manganese-nickel composite battery, 64 kWh of which is usable. The base model, called Single Motor Extended Range, will have a rear-wheel-drive layout and produce 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Volvo expects this version to have a range of 275 miles on the U.S.

How the Chinese tycoon driving Volvo plans to tackle Tesla

Sun, Sep 5 2021

HANGZHOU, China — "Do you know how big Volvo is?" asked Don Leclair, finance chief at Ford. It was 2008, and Leclair was responding to an offer from a little-known Chinese businessman to purchase the Swedish carmaker, which Ford owned. The businessman, Li Shufu, had a company with less than half Volvo's sales and a flagship model, King Kong, almost unknown outside China. He was politely shown the door of the "Glass House," Ford's iconic headquarters near Detroit, according to two people who were at the meeting. Ford's Leclair did not respond to requests for comment about the episode. Fast-forward to 2021 and Li Shufu's company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, is one of the biggest-selling automakers in the world's biggest auto market. It controls not only Volvo Cars but also a clutch of global auto brands, and a significant stake in German giant Daimler AG, the maker of Mercedes-Benz. These names are now part of its plans for a revolution in autos. Geely is preparing Volvo for a listing on the Nasdaq Stockholm exchange as a route towards the future of transportation: One where cars are part of an electrified network of mobility services, driving themselves, connecting to each other and — like cellphones — generating an array of data and new business opportunities. It's a vision more Silicon Valley than Detroit, where traditional automakers globally are chasing another giant — Tesla Inc. Li Shufu and his advisers eventually convinced Ford to part with Volvo in 2010 for $1.8 billion. It was the first in a string of deals, tapping brands such as Lotus, Smart and the London Electric Vehicle Company to form a network that he calls a "bigger circle of friends" across industry segments. Li Shufu sees them as building blocks to help Geely compete in a future where autos are not vehicles, but "service providers," he told Reuters in his management suite at Geely's headquarters in Hangzhou, eastern China. In that business model, cars will be available on subscription and offer services such as making payments and in-car apps. They will update their own software, and spawn opportunities in the same way as the mobile operating systems developed by Apple Inc and Google. "We are trying to create an automotive ecosystem similar to Android," he said. Li Shufu, 58, recently adopted a foreign first name - Eric - because he liked the sound of it.

Volvo's $2.9 billion stock IPO is a key test in shift to EVs

Mon, Oct 18 2021

Volvo Car AB is looking to raise 25 billion kronor ($2.9 billion) in a Stockholm initial public offering in a test for automakers amid the transition to electric vehicles. The Swedish carmaker, owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., is offering shares at 53 kronor to 68 kronor each (about $6-$8), according to a statement Monday.  The deal values Volvo Cars at as much as $23 billion, 11 years after the Chinese firm bought the business from Ford Motor Co. for $1.8 billion. The IPO is set to be EuropeÂ’s largest since January, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The carmaker, with an ambitious plan to only sell full electric cars by 2030, plans to use the funds to add carmaking capacity so it can nearly double annual sales to more than 1.2 million vehicles. Volvo Cars also plans to construct a battery plant in Europe. “We have a very clear strategy to be an electric company in 2030 and weÂ’ve been on that journey for some years now,” Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in an interview. “With this, of course, we can secure that transformation, because of course, itÂ’s not free of charge.” VolvoÂ’s projected market capitalization of about $20 billion compares to roughly $65 billion for BMW AG, while the German premium carmaker produces more than 2 million vehicles versus Volvo CarsÂ’ 660,000 last year. Newer entrants to the industry such as ChinaÂ’s Nio Inc. and Tesla Inc. have seen their share prices surge past traditional manufacturers even as they sell only a fraction of the number of vehicles. The IPO also comes less than a month after electric-vehicle maker Polestar, controlled by Volvo Cars and Geely, said it will go public in New York via a blank-check merger. The deal implies an enterprise value of $20 billion for the startup, with Volvo Cars expecting to hold a 50% stake in Polestar after it lists. While the century-old Swedish industry stalwart and Polestar have similar valuations, 4-year-old Polestar has a target of delivering only about 29,000 cars this year. Geely previously attempted to take Volvo Cars public in 2018, but called off the listing after investors were said to balk at its valuation expectations of as much as $30 billion.  A group of pension funds and institutional investors have committed to buying 6.4 billion kronor worth of shares in the IPO. The offering of as much as 21% of Volvo Cars runs through Oct. 27, and the shares are set to start trading in Stockholm on Oct. 28. Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
