Volvo 240 Dl Wagon - Well-preserved, Great For The Volvo Enthusiast on 2040-cars
Bothell, Washington, United States
I'm selling to fellow Volvo enthusiasts a well-preserved but with patina 1985 Volvo 240 wagon. I bought this car from the original owner in Whidbey Island last year. My dad bought a similar brand new one back in 1983 and we kept in the family until it got sadly totaled two years ago. Amazingly, its original engine was still running well at close to 500,000 miles.
Back to this car, I found this car on a quest for another well-taken cared Volvo 240 and for a fun car project with my Dad. As you may see from photos, the car's original paint and interior has lasted very well especially for its mileage. The original owner always had the car garaged. The clock is clear but has stopped working; the original radio works. The AC also works well as a defroster with the infamously warm Volvo heater. I not only have receipts of all the work done since I bought it, but also receipts since it was brand new. I even have the original window sticker (purchased in Portland) for this car! My goal was to enjoy mechanically sorting this car with my dad. A vast majority of the work was done by Volvo mechanics, while we did source the parts from IPD and some eBay original parts sellers. I have the receipts for the work done, but here is a list: Timing belt and tensioner, etc. Water pump Distributor Coil wires Spark plugs Seals/gaskets All oil changes and filters - engine, transmission, differential Engine compression test Radiator flush and hose replacements Engine wire harness Header and complete cat back exhaust (properly welded) Ignition control unit Neutral safety switch Fuel rail Ball joints Steering rod IPD sway bars Bilstein heavy duty shocks and struts All new Michelin tires New brake lines and master cylinder Engine breather/flame trap Fuel pump relay New oil dipstick Minor dent removal Rust inhibitor application Headlights Extra parts but not installed (not needed at this time): Extra water pump Suspension bushings In-tank fuel pump kit Brake junction block As mentioned, I also have the receipts from the original owners including ECM replacement, regular oil changes, steering rack and boot work, timing belt replacements, tires, motor mounts. The list goes on; the best thing is to come take a look at the car and see for yourself. Anyway, I've been reliably daily driving the car for the last several weeks to/from Seattle and Eastside. I'm very happy with the way it drives and handles. Alas, it's time for another fun project with my retired Dad. This is the Volvo "brick" wagon for you if you're looking for: 1. A nicely preserved and reliable daily-driver 2. Depreciation-free (though more of these cars seem to be gaining price-wise) 3. Great provenance/history. Reserve is much lower than our expenses. Serious inquiries only please. I can be available for a live discussion: (425) seven 5 0 5 0 seven 5. Happy motoring! |

Volvo ditches the diesel engine
Tue, Sep 19 2023Having already committed to producing nothing but electric vehicles by 2030 and being "climate neutral" by 2040, it doesn't come as a major surprise that Volvo will stop building and selling diesel-fueled vehicles next year. Way back in 2017, Volvo signaled its intention to phase out diesel engines due to rising costs of emissions technologies. Still, hearing that the very last Volvo ever to be fitted with a diesel engine will be built "a few months from now" may raise an eyebrow or two and serves as a clear reminder that in a few short years we'll be reading similar press releases about gasoline from the Swedish automaker and many others. There are two clear reasons why Volvo is ditching diesel. The first, according to Volvo Chief Executive Jim Rowan, is that electric is simply better. “Electric powertrains are our future, and superior to combustion engines: they generate less noise, less vibration, less servicing costs for our customers and zero tailpipe emissions,” says Rowan. The second reason behind the decision to depart the diesel market is similarly clear: climate change. Rowan says, "It is high time for industry and political leaders to be strong and decisive, and deliver meaningful policies and actions to fight climate change. WeÂ’re committed to doing our part and encourage our peers as well as political leaders around the globe to do theirs." Highlighting how quickly things have changed for Volvo, the automaker says that the majority of cars it sold in Europe as recently as 2019 were powered by diesel engines. Now, in the year 2023, the company says "that trend has largely inverted itself since then, driven by changing market demand, tighter emission regulations as well as our focus on electrification. The majority of our sales in Europe now consists of electrified cars, with either a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain." Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. Volvo Concept Recharge previews the future of Volvo design and technology
Wed, Jun 30 2021Volvo has announced a whole slew of information about where the company is headed, from battery technology to advanced driver aids. And it was all capped by the concept car you see above, the Volvo Concept Recharge. It all shows that Volvo's future is stylish, electrified and featuring the latest in safety technology. So, in a way, pretty much exactly what you'd hope and expect. Volvo didn't say much about the specifications of the Concept Recharge, but its design will clearly influence future Volvo models, including the company's upcoming flagship electric SUV that will be revealed next year. The front ditches even faux grilles for a sculpted fascia. The shape does echo some of the look of a grille, particularly with the Volvo slash and badge in the middle. The "Thor's Hammer" headlights remain, and in the case of the concept, they have wild running lights that slide up and out of the way inside the housing to make way for the actual projector headlights at night time. The whole shape of the car is based around the electric powertrain. It has a low floor and glass roof that means the whole body can be made lower and sleeker without compromising space. The wheels are pushed to the far edges, too. At the back, the car has slim vertical taillights, continuing a Volvo design tradition. On the roof, there is a lidar sensor placed at the top of the windshield. This is a significant piece of Volvo's future, as its next generation of vehicles, starting with that aforementioned SUV, will all come with one of these sensors as standard. It will be used in combination with cameras, radar, real-time data, machine learning and mapping data to provide advanced driver aids, including what Volvo describes as "unsupervised autonomous" driving in specific circumstances. Basically, it will be SAE Level 3 autonomy, a step beyond the hands-free, but still supervised Level 2 systems such as GM's Super Cruise. It will only be available on specific roads in specific circumstances, and so it won't be able to handle the entire driving task from driveway to driveway. The company expects to offer this level of autonomy on highways first, and it will only be in specific areas to begin. It didn't give an exact timeline for the roll-out and it will be a more gradual increase over time, rather than everything being launched all at once. The company also emphasized that it will only begin launching the features when they're well and truly ready.
