You are viewing a 1973, Volkswagen Thing that spent 20 of the last 40 years in indoor heated storage. Most recently in storage from 1999-2009. In 2009 the car underwent a complete mechanical and cosmetic update. Purchased from the Thing Shop in Arizona, new carpets, top and seat covers were installed as well as powder coated tubular bumpers, luggage rack and exhaust headers (not loud!). The mechanical update was performed by EAS in Boston, a recognized Mercedes restoration house and paint work was done by Dave Cusano, the lead paint restoration person with Hatch and Sons, a concourse Mercedes restoration house. The paint work is flawless and shows as new. Mechanically the car is perfect and the four Michelin tires provide for an unusually smooth ride for a VW Thing. The car has been driven less then 200 miles since this work was completed. Always garaged, this Thing is a RUST FREE survivor. It shows and drives beautifully. |

Skoda launching two new CNG-powered vehicles in Europe in June
Thu, May 29 2014Skoda's second- and third-ever production compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles aren't exactly speed burners, but they are efficient. The Czech automaker, which is owned by Volkswagen, will introduce its Octavia G-TEC and Octavia Combi G-TEC models to most of Europe next month. Skoda's first CNG model was the Citigo, which debuted in 2012. The Octavia models will have a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine that will deliver about 109 horsepower. Quickness isn't these cars' virtue, as their 0-60 mile per hour acceleration time will be almost 11 seconds. But they can go as far as 826 miles on their tanks of gas and CNG, enough to go from Prague to Rome in one shot, in case anyone was curious. Or nuts. The move by Skoda makes sense, as the CNG market in Europe has long been far further along than it is on this side of the pond, where CNG has primarily been used to move delivery trucks, but it's now available in pickups form Chrysler, Ford and General Motors as well as passenger cars from Chevy and Honda. The Skoda Citigo has moved almost 2,000 units since its debut, with 1,300 vehicles sold last year alone. That car can go as far as 385 miles on CNG and gasoline combined, which is impressive but not quite as bladder busting as the Octavia models. Check out Skoda's press release below. Volkswagen continues hunt for new chairman
Tue, May 5 2015Volkswagen is going to need a new chairman. And the question is not only who that will be, but when he or she will be selected. The German automaker held its Annual General Meeting in Hannover yesterday, the first in a baker's dozen years without Ferdinand Piech presiding as chairman. The gavel was wielded instead by Berthold Huber, a labor representative on the board who was named as interim chair. Piech was ousted along with his wife Ursula (who also sat on the board) after a failed attempt to push out Martin Winterkorn as CEO. According to Winterkorn, in speaking with Reuters in an article published by Automotive News, the industrial giant is working hard at finding a new chairman in short order. "The executive committee and the supervisory board are working hard to swiftly resolve the remaining issues with regard to the composition of the supervisory bodies in the best possible manner," Winterkorn said. The publication's German counterpart, however, paints a different picture. Speaking with Stephan Weil, the president of Lower Saxony who sits on the board as a shareholder representative, Automobilwoche says Volkswagen is in no rush to name a new chairman. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. What is clear, however, is that the new chairman will need broad support from the company's labor representatives as well as its shareholders – including the Porsche and Piech families and government representatives from Lower Saxony and Qatar. Porsche Automobil Holding SE holds 50.7 percent of the company's shares, the State of Lower Saxony another 20 percent, Qatar 17 percent and the remaining 12.3 percent by other shareholders. Some have speculated that Winterkorn could be promoted to the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board, but could end up having his term as chief executive (and chairman of the managing board) extended instead, with the chairmanship going to another candidate. VW recalls 420,000 vehicles for driver's airbag failure
Fri, Aug 14 2015Volkswagen is issuing a recall for 420,000 vehicles in the US because of a potential failure of the driver's side airbag. The campaign affects German-made examples of the 2010 Passat; the 2010-2013 Eos and Jetta; the 2010-2014 CC, Tiguan, and US-produced units of the Passat; the 2011-2013 Jetta SportWagen; and the 2011-2014 Golf and GTI. There are no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. Specifically, this problem comes because the steering wheel clock spring can be contaminated by debris, which moves the part's guide loops out of position. This can cause a tear in the electrical cable that controls the driver's airbag. If this happens, a warning light would illuminate, but the safety device would not deploy in a crash. VW is still identifying all of the affected VINs and developing a fix. The company plans to notify owners once everything is known. When the guide loops are dragged out of position, they may apply tension to the internal flat cable and cause it to tear. Should the cable tear, the electrical connection to the driver's front airbag may be lost, causing the airbag monitoring indicator light to illuminate. In a crash that warrants a driver front airbag deployment, the airbag will not deploy, leading to a risk of driver injury.
