Texas Classic Cars of Dallas is happy to present this 1974 Volkswagen "Thing".
The Volkswagen Type 181 was a two-wheel drive, four-door, convertible, off-road, military vehicle manufactured by Volkswagen from 1968 to 1983.

 photo IMG_9212.jpg

Originally developed for the German Army, the Type 181 was also sold to the public, as the Kurierwagen in Germany, the Trekker in the United Kingdom, the Thing in the United States (1973-1974), and the Safari in Mexico. Civilian sales ended after model year 1980.

 photo IMG_9213.jpg

The Thing has been popular not because it could go "fast" or has a beautiful body design, but mostly because it was just so strange. The body is squarish and utilitarian, but undeniably unique for a passenger car. The orange paint makes this car even more unique, a shine that looks like it was just done not long ago.

All Things came standard with a convertible top, this one includes its original vinyl top and curtains. The cars four doors can be easily removed, requiring no tools.

 photo IMG_9222.jpg

The windshield can be folded. And what better way to drive the car than on white wheels wrapped around brand new BF Goodrich tires

The interior is the definition of stripped. The seats have been re-upholstered and a matching canopy top and spare tire cover were made.  The bench seat in the rear of the car has plenty of space for those wanting to ride in this unusual car.

The only instrumentation is a speedometer that houses a fuel gauge.

The odometer is currently not working.

 photo IMG_9244.jpg

To add a little riding pleasure to this car an aftermarket JVC cd/am/fm radio was installed along with a set of aftermarket speakers.

 photo IMG_9260.jpg

The current owner has only put 200 miles to the car ever since it got tuned up last. Most important the Thing looked so very, very weird. You either love them or not!

 photo IMG_9253.jpg

In 2004 to 2006 the Thing was treated to numerous mechanical upgrades. Everything from brake cylinders to exhaust system and heater boxes to transmission adjustments. It was gone over completely. We have receipts for all of the work. The current owner in May of this year had upper bushings installed, ball joints, new plugs and points, torsion arm bushings and the new cam installed.

 photo IMG_9266.jpg

A spare tire is in place on the back of the car such as Jeeps would normally have. A cover that matches the seats was done to make this ride more stylish.

 photo IMG_9277.jpg

The Thing was built on the same chassis as the pre-1968 Microbus and is propelled by VW's air cooled, 46hp, 1600cc flat four. Acceleration is pretty slow 0 to 60 mph takes a little more than 20 seconds. To give this Thing a little more power, one of the previous owners installed a cam. The current owner changed to a larger carburetor to compensate the cam. Julius now runs like a champ.

The undercarriage is very clean, there is no show of rust and the body is clearly straight. There are however some obvious small dents here and there.

Poor headlights cause 40 cars to miss IIHS Top Safety Pick rating

Mon, Aug 6 2018

Over the past few months, we've noticed a number of cars and SUVs that have come incredibly close to earning one of the IIHS's highest accolades, the Top Safety Pick rating. They have great crash test scores and solid automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning systems. What trips them up is headlights. That got us wondering, how many vehicles are there that are coming up short because they don't have headlights that meet the organization's criteria for an "Acceptable" or "Good" rating. This is a revision made after 2017, a year in which headlights weren't factored in for this specific award. This is also why why some vehicles, such as the Ford F-150, might have had the award last year, but have lost it for this year. We reached out to someone at IIHS to find out. He responded with the following car models. Depending on how you count, a whopping 40 models crash well enough to receive the rating, but don't get it because their headlights are either "Poor" or "Marginal." We say depending on how you count because the IIHS actual counts truck body styles differently, and the Infiniti Q70 is a special case. Apparently the version of the Q70 that has good headlights doesn't have adequate forward collision prevention technology. And the one that has good forward collision tech doesn't have good enough headlights. We've provided the entire list of vehicles below in alphabetical order. Interestingly, it seems the Volkswagen Group is having the most difficulty providing good headlights with its otherwise safe cars. It had the most models on the list at 9 split between Audi and Volkswagen. GM is next in line with 7 models. It is worth noting again that though these vehicles have subpar headlights and don't quite earn Top Safety Pick awards, that doesn't mean they're unsafe. They all score well enough in crash testing and forward collision prevention that they would get the coveted award if the lights were better.

Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.
The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.
This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler: Ducati is not for sale

Sat, Jun 18 2016

"Ducati is not for sale." Those words, attributed to Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, are about as clear and definitive as can be, and they reiterate a previous statement about the potential sale of the premium Italian motorcycle brand that was made in March of this year. "[Ducati and Lamborghini] belong to Audi and, together with us, have an excellent future," said Stadler. Thing is, Audi, as well-off and established as it may be, still falls under the Volkswagen umbrella. And, as you're surely aware, things haven't exactly been smooth sailing for the VW Group over the last several months. The German automaker has squirreled away billions of dollars in anticipation of the legal fallout that's sure to come from the falsification of vehicle emissions data, and that's going to leave the company strapped for cash. All of that bad news led to speculation that VW could sell off some of its non-core businesses. What of the future of the Scania and Man heavy truck brands? Those don't currently appear to be on the auction block, either. VW's continued involvement in the HD truck segment was announced as part of the brand's TOGETHER - Strategy 2025 plan, in which Volkswagen outlined plans to push further into vehicle electrification and vehicle autonomy.
