The Volkwagen Thing was only imported to the United States for 2 years. Only about 25,000 made it here to the States. This example, the Type 181 was the left-hand drive model imported to the USA.

 photo DSC04566_zpsa5a18fbd.jpg

This example showcases custom dark red base/clearcoat paint and is a pleasure to cruise.

The exterior displays the original sheetmetal throughout. These are very unique vehicles. The doors are removable as is the top. Even the windshield folds down in the Thing. Originally, the Thing was only available in three colors, Blizzard White, Pumpkin Orange, or Sunshine Yellow.

 photo DSC04511_zpsba2d45db.jpg

The vinyl top on this VW Thing is in very good condition throughout as is the glass and removable window panels.

Not only are the Thing's doors removable front to back, they are interchangeable.

 photo DSC04560_zpsb3c811a0.jpg

Interestingly enough, Volkswagen's Thing was built on the VW micro-bus pre-68 chassis.

 photo DSC04535_zps3cdf36ab.jpg

The engine compartment displays the reliable little dual point 1600 c.c. VW engine. This is a strong running little car that shifts through the gears with ease.

 photo DSC04532_zps70873374.jpg

The dual exhaust pipes give this THING a little attitude.

 photo DSC04540_zps48b398b0.jpg

The interior is Spartan at best. The instrumentation is easy to read and simple, a speedometer, odometer, and a fuel gauge. The speedometer DOES NOT work. The 4-speed gearbox shifts through the gears as it should. The black vinyl upholstery is in good condition front to back. The glovebox area in the VW Thing is more of a cubby hole, it never came with an actual door.

The trunk is solid throughout. There is a good sized floor pan rust-thru hole and some rust-thru in the engine compartment photographed.

 photo DSC04558_zps4f875d47.jpg

The original identification plate is intact. This is chassis # 18328408943.

Someone did an amatuer job of dropping some metal in the floors to cover the rust holes.

Underneath this Thing there is rust in the floorpans, surface and one area of pretty extensive rust-through. I showed this rust in detail on the photos above. This is common for all the VWs. Luckily, the pans are fairly in-expensive and appears passenger rear floor pan area is most affected. Enjoy this car as-is or you can inquire about our facilities'  restoration services at Texas Classic Cars of Dallas.

 photo DSC04545_zps300a22c5.jpg

You can find paint flaws when you start looking closely. Note the cracking at the rocker panel in the paint, see above.

 photo DSC04542_zps5c6e10a9.jpg

The paint finish does show well, but has some minor flaws as all classics do, see the detailed photos above. We do our best to accurately describe our vehicles. Our 100% positive customer feedback reflects the way we do business here at Texas Classic Cars of Dallas.

The 15-inch steel wheels were fitted with 205/75R15 radial tires all around.

Volkswagen hatches hotter GTI in Geneva

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't even launched here in the United States, but over in Geneva, we're already getting our first glimpse at the hotter GTI hatchback. The fancy new Mk VII Golf is already off to a healthy start with positive reviews in Europe, and we have no doubt that this next GTI will work hard to regain its title as king of the hot hatches.
The big news for this generation of GTI is that for the first time ever, Volkswagen is actually offering two different power grades for the model, both relying on the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. Standard cars pack 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but an optional performance pack ups the horsepower number to 230. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes 6.5 seconds (6.4 with the performance pack) and top speed is quoted at 153 mph (or 155 with the performance kit). Volkswagen will continue to offer the GTI with both six-speed manual and dual-clutch transmissions.
On the visual front, the sub-3,000-pound GTI adds the usual bit of hot hatch aggression over the standard Golf, and those changes carry over to the interior with a flat-bottomed wheel and, of course, plaid seats. She's certainly a looker, and while some of us do find the new Golf's design to be a bit staid and evolutionary, the enhancements for the GTI indeed tug on our enthusiast heart strings.

France may scrap diesel fuel subsidies in wake of VW scandal

Tue, Oct 13 2015

Now that a particular German automaker has sneezed, it appears that French automotive subsidies will catch a cold. Count France among the growing legion of countries not happy about Volkswagen's admission that some of its diesel vehicles contain software that will artificially reduce emissions levels during testing. As a result, the French government is talking about reducing or eliminating diesel subsidies that make diesel fuel about 15 cents per liter (roughly 89 cents a gallon) cheaper than gas. The change would tax gas and diesel at the same rate. France may end the diesel tax credits as soon as the next fiscal year, Bloomberg News says, citing comments from French Environment Minister Segolene Royal this week. About two-thirds of the cars on France's roads are diesel, according to the CCFA, the French automaker association. In fact, diesels accounted for more than half of the new light-duty vehicles sold in Europe last year. That may drop to 35 percent by 2022 in part because of the scandal, according to automotive consultant LMC Automotive. Things could change even more France is considering letting more vehicles qualify for the 10,000-euro incentive for switching from old diesels to new plug-in vehicles. Last month, VW said that its cheater software might be installed in as many as 11 million vehicles, forcing the German automaker to set aside $7.3 billion to address the fallout from the scandal. Among other issues, VW and its Audi division were stripped of its Green Car of the Year Awards for the first time in the history of the awards bestowed by Green Car Journal. The scandal also forced Martin Winterkorn to resign as VW's CEO last month after eight years on the job and is delaying a number of the automaker's upcoming projects. 'CSR Racing 2' mobile game adding 'Fast & Furious' pack

Sat, Apr 11 2020

Popular mobile drag-racing game CSR Racing 2 (CSR2) is constantly adding new cars, new events, and new features to keep the game fresh. In March, CSR2 released the stunning McLaren Speedtail into the game, and for April, a "Fast & Furious"-themed pack is on the way. CSR2 recently celebrated 100 seasons of racing (the game runs on its own calendar) and announced a new update is on the way. Many new vehicles are coming, including a McLaren F1 LM, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupe, a Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, a Honda NSX-R, a C3 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, a Lamborghini Countach LP5000 Quattrovalvole, a Porsche Carrera GT and a Shelby Cobra 427 S/C.  Through various events, players will also be able to unlock more cars such as the Aston Martin Valhalla Concept, the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2, a TVR Griffith, a Toyota GR Supra, a Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, a BMW M8 Competition Coupe, and for the first time in a video game, the Mini John Cooper Works GP. But possibly the most hyped vehicles included in the new update are not cars that come straight from the production line. Update 2.11 will add character cars from the "Fast & Furious" franchise.  As part of a series of special events within the game, CSR2 customers will be able to race with numerous F&F cars such as the 1970 Dodge Charger Daytona, the 2001 Veilside Honda S2000, and Jesse's iconic 1995 Volkswagen Jetta. There are no details about the specifics of the events, but the first will launch in mid-April and the rest will slowly drip the rest of the year. The new cars come after CSR2 released the "Fast & Furious" Toyota Supra, Veilside Mazda RX-7, and Mitsubishi Eclipse back in 2019.  For more information about CSR2 and the upcoming update, visit CSR2's Tumblr.
