1973 Volkswagon Thing on 2040-cars
Manchester, Connecticut, United States
Up for your consideration is a 1973 volkswagon THING. Very solid foundation for a daily driver and or candidate for show quality restoration. This vehicle was a driver for our family for 4 years until I had the misfortune of having a spark plug blow out the number 3 cylinder. It was parked and a planned father son project was in the works. The engine still retains its original case however a holly carburetor now sits a top of the intake manifold. The Thing does fire up but with the damage to the head it is losing compression and driving her is not recommended until fixed. Good news however is I will supply buyer with (2) reconditioned 040 heads ready to bolt on! Exterior of the vehicle is very solid. Looks to be repainted a peach color as evidence of over spray exist on some items. One small dent in front corner of nose that chipped some paint and and small dent on the rear door which also she'd some color. Both areas have very minor surface rust that can be fixed with some sandpaper. The seats look to be all original and in good shape with no tears. The floor pans are in good nick showing only surface rust mainly on the rear side. Again an easy repair by some quick surface sanding and application of some por15 or other sealer. Underside is clean, has some surface rust towards the front of her but again nothing detrimental. The volkswagon is equipped with the original gas heater which worked flawless up until recently when parked. I haven't looked into it so I couldn't give you an accurate diagnosis or repair remedy to solve this. All lights function and the 8 track still cranks out 70's best. The Thing is currently using its rare factory hardtop to keep the the elements at bay. The soft top (which will also be included) is in distress. It will require new canvas and refurbished. side curtains are all there but I believe 2 have holes in the plastic and all are yellow from age. Always drove with them off so it was never a bother. Some clear plastic and some stitching will bring life back to the curtains. All tires will need to be replaced as the new original wheels and tires were taken off and sold when the engine decided to eject the plug. I do have a set on there to roll her around and will include some nice rare factory Thing hubcaps to new buyer. I also have a Thing specific tow bar which was used tow her behind our rv during vacation. with a little bit of work and a little bit of green paper, this Thing will be ready to give you the thumbs up from onlookers and satisfaction of owning a air cooled classic! Reason for sale is strictly due an unforseen financial obligations.
The Thing is being sold in as is where is condition. I understand not all prospective buyers have the luxury to inspect the vehicle due to location, so I will accept emails at Si4door2007@yahoo.com with question regarding the volkswagon. I will be more then happy to take specific photos and or supply information to the best of my ability. If your local I encourage you to stop by and see this Thing in person to make your own evaluation. Just email me and we can set a date. Vehicle Will be listed with a reserve, and is listed locally. Thank you and happy bidding !!
2 original keys will be included along with a bill of sale, and tax documents to register this vehicle. In the state of Connecticut no title is issued for cars/trucks older then 1981. Car wash not included but recommended :) Deposit due within 48 hours in the amount of $250.00 If you plan on using paypal to fund entire purchase, please add 3% to total balance Car will be released upon "cleared payment" Inspections welcomed prior to auction close, Please contact me to arrange meeting. 2015 VW Golf R caught getting a flogging on 'Ring
Wed, 22 May 2013The upcoming version of the Volkswagen Golf R is nearly ready for prime time, if this video of the car flying around the Nürburgring is any indication. The all-wheel-drive R seems to make quick, neat work of the corners we see here, and sounds pretty devilish in the process.
Expectations are that the new Golf R will run a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (what else?), tuned to produce even more than the current car's 256 horsepower. (Some sources have indicated outputs as high as 286 horsepower, with 280 pound-feet of torque. It's still not clear if Volkswagen will bring the six-speed dual-clutch transmission to the US-spec Golf R in this next go-round or if we'll stick to having only... eh... the stick.
In either case - watching the video below will only whet your appetite for the new, highest performing member of the Golf family.
VW planning 20 new plug-in models for China
Thu, Oct 30 2014With just about everything getting super-sized for China, Volkswagen is following suit with its plug-in vehicle plans for the world's most populous country. VW, Europe's largest carmaker, is looking to sell more than 20 different plug-in models in China within the next four years, Reuters says, citing comments Volkswagen Group China head Jochem Heizmann made in Shanghai. The company is hoping that translates to sales of more than 100,000 plug-ins in China by the end of the decade. Go big or go home, right? There's a huge plug-in vehicle opportunity in China, especially given the bad pollution situation in cities like Beijing and Shanghai and the Chinese government's incentives for plug-in vehicle buyers. Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said at the Beijing Motor Show this spring that the company would spend $25 billion on at least a half-dozen plug-in models for China by 2018. VW will start selling the e-Golf in China this year and the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid in 2015. VW said in August that it would start selling the e-Golf in the US for about $35,500 in November. That's a $6,500 price hike from the base Nissan Leaf.
Tesla tires turning on Stretchla Vanagon EV conversion project
Tue, Jan 7 2014It is one thing to say you are going to Frankenstein a Tesla Model S with a pair of Siamese-twinned Volkswagen Vanagons and quite another to actually start taking your newly-acquired, smashed-up electric sedan apart in an effort to bring it back to life. Otmar Ebenhoech is doing just that, and having no small successes along the way. The Stretchla project, as it is being called, has officially started and our protagonist has put together another bit of video to document his progress and let us know about some of the different challenges he's encountered and conquered. While our original post about this endeavor featured video of the stretched Vanagon's drivetrain removal, this latest installment focuses on the Model S. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition and has been tackling some of the basic problems one might expect to encounter: lots of error messages and an electrically disconnected battery pack. Without the aid of a manual or technical diagrams, he's removed the battery pack and discovered why it wasn't sending power to the car. Scroll below to watch the ten-minute presentation and celebrate some initial victories. You can also check out the official Stretchla blog for more photos and updates, including the most recent one that discusses how he talked himself into paying (*spoiler alert) $42,000 for a wrecked, non-functional electric car, along with more recent struggles with the steering rack. Hit us up in the comments to let us know what kind of trouble you would get into with a Model S drivetrain of your own. This content is hosted by a third party.
