I have been told this car is a prime candidate for a tear down restore as there is minimal rust, runs great, has all the parts and is almost completely original. If you know someone that has been thinking of restoring a Thing let them know about this posting as it is tough to find one in this good of condition with all the parts and pieces.

It has always been in California. I bought this Thing from my uncle in Santa Rosa, CA about 7 years ago, it was originally sold in Berkeley, CA and original owner lived in Oakland, CA and has been in San Diego for the last 7 years. I painted the outside and put a new top on it about 5 years ago. It has never been in an accident and has minimal rust. It has has been my surf car and treated me well, but I have children now and don't have time to drive it anymore. I have the pink slip and it is currently registered. The car gets a lot of attention, thumbs up, "nice Thing" etc. Before kids my wife and I and another couple would get in with four surfboards piled up in the back seat behind the driver and cruise the beaches looking for surf. With four doors it is very roomy and comfortable fitting five people in for sight seeing or a trip to get a bite to eat.

My uncle got new side curtains which are in good condition, put in a new gas tank and fuel lines and had some suspension work done so it drives great. At 70 mph you can take your hand off the wheel and it drives straight. I just had the heater worked on and it works well, (but take that fuse out when not driving as it draws on the battery all the time for some reason). The brakes are in great condition.

Right away it needs tires, they have plenty of tread but are old and recommend you get new ones before it gets driven very far.  It runs great and I would drive it anywhere. The steering box is worn and loose as it has been ever since I bought the car. I am used to it and comfortable driving it how it is but it is ready to be replaced, CV joints are good but boots are cracked, leaks oil from the tubes under the engine as the seals are old. Rusted under the battery and needs a plate welded in but the pan is good other than that.

The pictures are meant to show you it has not been in an accident and has just surface rust. For that reason I took close ups of the worst spots so you know what you are getting into. It has sat on the street the last few years and the right side was on the downhill so if there was water to sit, it sat on the right side so it is "worst", not that it is that bad. The worst rust is under the rear door, see minimal rust on windshield and left side is not as bad as the right, front left has a small crease where someone gently bumped into me when parking. The unidentifiable picture is under the front so you can see there is just surface rust there. It is a great car that starts up every time perfectly, (the technique is to pump the gas twice and as you turn the key press on the gas and it fires up right away every time, even if it has been siting a couple of weeks).

Seats are fair, small tears in the passenger seat, back seat has wax from surf borads on it that disclored it but maybe you are better at cleaning them than I am. Only one sun visor is on the car but I have the other one, (neither are in very good shape). All doors open and close well. The air hose coming out of the top of the engine has tape on it and has ever since I got it.

I have the original owners manual, a parts manual, a service manual and some original marketing material.

You will need to figure out transportation. I drilled holes in the front bumper and bolted a tow bar on to tow it from Santa Rosa when I bought it but I do not have a truck anymore. If you are close to San Diego I can drive it to you. Call me if you have questions 8am to 6pm California time.

VW budget sub-brand stuck in limbo over VW standards, costs

Sat, 01 Mar 2014

Reports in October 2012 claimed Volkswagen had begun investigating the creation of its own budget brand. This came after having failed to purchase Malaysian car company Proton or produce a meaningful partnership with Suzuki, and after watching Renault-Nissan make piles of euro on Dacia and plot the return of Datsun.
For VW, more important than the question of what to call it was how to build it profitably and in a way that didn't damage the VW brand. According to a report in Autocar, a satisfactory answer still hasn't been found. The hurdle is how to hit "'necessary' quality and safety levels" at the price points needed to make the venture worthwhile. At the time of the 2012 report, German outlet Der Spiegel said VW was trying to get prices down to 6,000 to 8,000 euro ($7,784 to $10,379 US), about two thousand to four thousand euro under the price of the VW Up and in line with the cost of a 6,790-euro Dacia Sandero in Germany.
In March 2013, VW announced, "We want to bring a true budget car to the market in China in the foreseeable future," the most concrete move in that direction after years of planning to make a decision. Working with local Chinese maker FAW, it was predicted that the vehicle in question would appear around 2016, but as of November last year a final vote on it needed to wait until this year because "We are still working on the cost side" and profit possibilities for a car that "has to be durable, it has to be precise, it has to be safe."

Icon goes Derelict on a 1967 VW Bus

Fri, Sep 11 2015

Jonathan Ward and Icon have an eye for the little details in everything they make, and that's especially true of the company's Derelict projects. This time they are turning their attention to the '67 Volkswagen Bus. The van might look a little tired at first, but Icon gives the VW a complete makeover to keep it on the road for decades to come. Ward's client for this build had owned VW Buses before but wanted to have a truly usable one. Making that harder, she requested that the final result remain true to the essence of these classic vans. To do that, Icon let the exterior remain almost entirely stock, except for a few minor additions like the roof rack, tent, and a 110-volt outlet hidden at the back. The interior was kept looking original too, but the builders installed custom walnut cabinets and a load of modern upgrades, including air conditioning. The air-cooled boxer engine was also dumped in favor of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder sourced from a Jetta. To really understand just how much is changed, let Ward take you on a complete tour of the overhauled, vintage VW in this clip to show off all of his team's impressive work. Related Video:

That time when VW thought its diesels were holier than hybrids

Fri, Oct 9 2015

When it comes to its diesel engines, Volkswagen was publicly trying to work the regulation system as far back as 2011. That's when the Obama Administration announced stricter US greenhouse-gas emissions standards for 2025. At the time, VW was saying its diesel engines were as clean or even cleaner than hybrids and some plug-in vehicles, The New York Times says, citing former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officer Margo Oge. VW did indeed boycott Obama's announcement of the 2025 Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards four years ago. The reason given at the time was that VW's attempt for its diesel engines to get special consideration and extra credits for fulfilling the emissions mandate was ultimately rejected by the EPA. Oge said VW's US executives were conciliatory but the automaker's German officials were "arrogant" in their belief that diesel technology was far superior, from an emissions standpoint, than hybrids or plug-ins. As we know now, that was not the case. Last month, we learned that VW fitted as many as 11 million vehicles around the world with software that programmed its diesel engines to show artificially low emissions levels during testing. In the ongoing fallout, VW has set aside $7.3 billion to address the scandal and the CEO resigned. New VW CEO Matthias Muller says recalls on the diesels in question may go into effect as soon as January in Europe. Meanwhile, among other indignities, Green Car Journal rescinded Green Car of the Year Awards it had bestowed on the 2009 Jetta TDI and 2010 Audi A3 TDI, while Volkswagen's Stock was delisted from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
