History:

In 1978 VW began producing the VW Rabbit Pickup Truck to compete with Datsun and Toyota imports.  It was manufactured in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and was designed by an American team of engineers.  Approximately 78,000 were produced up through 1982 and some 1982‘s were sold as 1983’s. Only about 10% were diesels.  Production stopped and for a few years none were made.  Then VW started making them again in the late 1980s in California.  They were called a "VW Caddy" and were made over an 8-9 year span there.

Meet "Preston LaBronze":

In the early 90’s this truck was owned by a young man named Alan who was VW mechanic in Rochester, and the motor and transmission were overhauled at about 160,000 miles.  In the late 90’s at the age of 32 he died unexpectedly and the truck was then acquired by his father, Victor.  For quite some time the truck was not driven much, but rather kept in the garage.  And to our knowledge it was never driven in snow or salt.

At the age of 92, Victor could no longer care for his yard and home so he and his wife moved to an apartment in a neighboring town.  Since that time Preston has been driven about 12,000 miles over 4 years of summer driving.  After a 2-year search the "cap" was found in Boonville, NY and restored. The cap came from Las Vegas originally, and is a very rare find.

In the last several years almost everything in the front end was replaced, including the steering rack, axles, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, ball joints and struts.  The glow plug system was also rebuilt, and the tires and battery were replaced in 2013.

As you can see in the photos, Preston is clean, amazing, and proud to get 45 mpg!!

*And he even still has the original owners manual ;)

VW launches special edition Touareg X

Tue, 03 Dec 2013

Volkswagen is no stranger to special editions, but its Touareg SUV has remained largely unspecial in terms of exclusive trims or unique packages. That's changed with the announcement of the Touareg X, a 1,000-unit run based on the V6 TDI Lux trim - mid-range diesel model, between the navigation-equipped TDI Sport and the TDI R-Line.
The already special Touareg gets 19-inch "Moab" wheels, LED taillights (to go along with its LED DRLs) and "Touareg X" badging, while all 1,000 units will be painted Moonlight Blue Pearl. Tweaks in the cabin are equally light, with a black-on-black-on-black color scheme dominating - black Vienna leather, a black headliner and piano black trim. Aluminum bits make an appearance in the form of the door sills and pedals, although that's about it.
Other than those few aesthetic tweaks, the Touareg X is equipped largely like the Touareg Lux on which it's based. That means navigation, a panoramic sunroof, power seats, LED running lights, dual-zone air conditioning and heated power seats, among other tech pieces. Pricing starts at $56,170, making for a slight bump of $1,195 over the standard Touareg Lux.

2015 VW Golf R caught getting a flogging on 'Ring

Wed, 22 May 2013

The upcoming version of the Volkswagen Golf R is nearly ready for prime time, if this video of the car flying around the Nürburgring is any indication. The all-wheel-drive R seems to make quick, neat work of the corners we see here, and sounds pretty devilish in the process.
Expectations are that the new Golf R will run a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (what else?), tuned to produce even more than the current car's 256 horsepower. (Some sources have indicated outputs as high as 286 horsepower, with 280 pound-feet of torque. It's still not clear if Volkswagen will bring the six-speed dual-clutch transmission to the US-spec Golf R in this next go-round or if we'll stick to having only... eh... the stick.
In either case - watching the video below will only whet your appetite for the new, highest performing member of the Golf family.

VW midsize crossover production headed for Chattanooga

Fri, 10 Jan 2014

Potential labor woes aside, it looks like Volkswagen's Chattanooga, TN factory must have done something that impressed the bosses in Germany, because it sounds like the three-year-old factory is set to score a second model.
The factory currently builds the Passat, and has been in the running alongside VW's Puebla, Mexico factory to build a new crossover vehicle, likely based on the CrossBlue Concept. According to Bloomberg, a pair of unnamed sources have confirmed that Chattanooga is the favorite ahead of an official announcement.
When last we heard about the CrossBlue Concept, word was that a production decision had been delayed over concerns about the three-row CUV's business case. That August 2013 story claimed that a decision regarding the CrossBlue would be pushed back until early in 2014, which means we're ripe for some sort of news, whether good or bad.
