For sale, 1980 Volkswagen Pickup.  If you want a nice vintage Volkswagen pickup truck, here it is.  As a VW enthusiast and collector, I looked for a nice clean VW pickup for years.  These trucks were based on the VW Rabbit and were made (and sold) in the US from 1980 through 1983 at the Westmoreland, Pennsylvania assembly plant.  Called the VW Pickup here in the US, they were referred to as the VW Caddy in Europe.

Last summer I was able to obtain this truck which was originally a California car in the San Francisco area.  Since then it's been in Las Vegas; so it's a nice dry truck without the usual rust problems you see in most of these old VW pickups.  All original and in excellent condition for a 33 year old truck.  Paint is the original factory blue paint code LE5B.  It's been touched up in some places due to rock chips and minor scratches but still looks good.  The interior still looks decent too.  Original carpet isn't perfect but still in very serviceable shape as you can see in the photos.  I'll also include a pair of blue floormats I bought and keep in the truck to protect it even further.  No tears in the seats or door panels.  Original wheels and hubcaps.  Previous owner had done the following work about 2 years ago.

  • Engine was professionally bored and rebuilt with new bearings and seals
  • Kolbenschmidt 0.55 mm oversize pistons
  • Mahle rod and main bearings
  • Rebuilt fuel injection pump
  • New Graf water pump
  • New OEM oil pump
  • New clutch and flywheel
  • New clutch cable
  • New gas accelerator cable
  • New coolant expansion tank
  • New front grill
  • Chrome all metal door handles
  • Chrome all metal external mirrors
  • Chrome all metal door handles (inside)
  • Chrome all metal window cranks
  • Clear side markers and front turn signal lenses

After driving it home to Las Vegas, I invested another $1,700 into it.  Replaced the diesel fuel lines, replaced 2 fuel injectors, replace one headlight, repair electrical problem on the headlights as well.  Work was professionally done by Findlay Volkswagen North in Las Vegas.  Replaced some fuses so the headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and horn all work well now.  Rock chips in windshield repaired by Safelite Auto Glass.  Battery replaced in February with a new DuraLast battery from Autozone.  Runs good.  Here's a video of the truck running.

These old diesel Volkswagen pickups also get amazing mileage too.  About 35 mpg in town and 45 on the highway.  Last year when gas prices got a little ridiculous, I would often leave my Lincoln Town Car at home and occassionally take this little truck to work.

Not a show car by any means; just minor wear and tear that is way below average.  I get compliments on how clean and original this truck is all the time from VW and car enthusiasts in general.  Could be a great restoration project or just enjoy it "as is" as I have done.  I intended to show it in the original classes of some vintage VW and general car shows but haven't really had the opportunity to do so in the past year due to health related issues.  I've got about $8,900 invested into this vehicle but my loss is your gain.  Serious bidders only please.  $500 deposit via PayPal due within 48 hours of auction close.  Remainder due in cash or cashiers check.  Funds must be cleared before title is released.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here on eBay; or call me at (702) 203-7464.  Thanks and happy bidding.

This classic VW bus packs Porsche power

Thu, May 14 2015

Appearances can be deceiving. The rolling embodiments of that principal we call "sleeper cars": ordinary-looking vehicles that pack a much bigger punch than you'd get by just looking at them. Take this classic VW bus, for example. Sure, it may have some racing graphics and upgraded rolling stock to tell you this isn't just any old van, but looking at it, you'd still have no idea what lies beneath the surface. That's where you'll find oily bits sourced from Porsches. And not from a 914, either. (That was as much a Volkswagen as it was a Porsche anyway.) No, this vintage 1962 VW T1 "Bulli" van packs the air-cooled, forced-induction flat-six from a 993 Turbo, driving 530 horsepower and 558 pound-feet of torque through the six-speed manual transmission from a 996 GT3 to 18-inch BBS alloys. It's the obsessive six-year project of Swiss customizer Fred Bernhard, who also used carbon fiber to cut the curb weight down to 3,300 pounds. The resulting light sleeper can top out at 143 miles per hour, in a vehicle with the aerodynamic profile of, well, a bus. It's called the T1 Race Taxi and is being showcased by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles at the GTI-Treffen at Worthersee this year. Short of maybe the Renault Espace F1 concept, we can hardly imagine any other van we'd rather drive around the Nordschleife. Or just to pick up the kids from school.

VW Beetle R is one mean bug

Wed, 02 Oct 2013

Volkswagen's R lineup currently consists of the Golf R in North America, and the too-cool-for-school Scirocco R in Europe. It hasn't exactly been a secret as to which VW would next get the R treatment; the German manufacturer reportedly confirmed that a hotter Beetle would be coming to the US. That announcement, in August 2011, was followed up by a production-ready Beetle R Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
After some wait, we're finally seeing spy shots of the Beetle R in Germany. The mule shown in the images here is wearing the R-Line bodykit, which adds sportier front and rear fascias, side skirts, dual exhausts and a not-so-subtle spoiler. Topped off with Volkswagen's traditional, five-spoke R wheels, we'd be just fine with the Beetle R coming to market as is.
Our spy photographer, though, seems to think that the production R will get even sportier sheetmetal, which we take to mean the more assertive look shown on the Frankfurt show car. Larger intakes on the front fascia, a bigger rear spoiler and vertical vents on the rear bumper could all be upcoming. Whether a production model will include the concept's polished wheels (R cars haven't traditionally embraced that look), vented hood and the quad-tipped exhausts remains to be seen.

Volkswagen Scirocco GTS set for Shanghai reveal

Fri, Apr 17 2015

Though we still can't get one over here, buyers in other markets can get the Scirocco in an array of trim levels. And at the Shanghai Motor Show this month, Volkswagen is introducing another. The new Scirocco GTS slots between the base models and the R performance version. Reviving the spirit of the original introduced more than 30 years ago and picking up where the last model left off, the new GTS splits the Scirocco lineup the way the GTI fits into the Golf range. It even packs the GTI's engine: a 2.0-liter turbo four with 210 hp, mated to either a six-speed manual or DSG. The GTS also packs standard 18-inch (or optional 19-inch wheels), a further departure from the R-Line aero kit and racing stripes running up the top. The interior is similarly upgraded with special trim, a golf-ball shifter (on manual versions) and more. All of this makes the Scirocco an even more tempting proposition – if only we could get our hands on one. Wolfsburg/Shanghai, 16 April 2015 Comeback of a GT icon: World premiere of the 220 PS Scirocco GTS in Shanghai - Exclusive GTS trim with new 18-inch alloy wheels - Scirocco GTS* has a new generation of infotainment equipment on board as standard Ten key facts about the Scirocco GTS*: 1. The new Scirocco GTS makes its debut as a separate and especially sporty GT version 2. 220 PS Scirocco GTS has a top speed of 246 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds 3. Individualised exterior with new 18-inch alloy wheels and optional GTS decor (decor standard in China) 4. Red brake callipers as an identifying feature 5. Exclusive GTS interior with black trim features, red stitching and the legendary golf ball gear knob 6. Included as standard: the "Composition Colour", from the latest generation of infotainment systems 7. Modular infotainment matrix (MIB II) available for all Scirocco models from the end of May 8. The Scirocco GTS can also be ordered with an extremely quick-shifting 6-speed DSG gearbox as an option 9. The spirit of the first Scirocco GTS (which made its debut in 1982) was carried forward into the year 2015 in the new GTS 10. With over a million sold, the Scirocco is one of the most successful sports cars in the world Some cars live for ever because they are constantly reinvented. The Scirocco, a pure-bred European sports car, is one of these cars that is forever young. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 41 years ago, it became an icon of compact German coupes.
