I have driven this car over 3000 miles and I just can't say enough great things about it. Nothing but blue skies and smooth sailing here. Lots of terrific room for the family and all the gear. My soccer daughter loves all the space in the back for umbrellas, chairs, coolers and more. I have gotten 25 MPG combined highway and city taking the kids to school and 30 MPG when it is just highway on trips. Who would want a cramped small little compact car when you can get all this space and great gas mileage too? Tons of space like a SUV but great gas mileage. This vehicle is also turbo-charged when you need a little extra like getting on the highway. What a terrific all around vehicle. Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia
Tue, 20 Aug 2013Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.
2024 CES Mega Photo Gallery: Honda concepts, a VinFast truck and flying cars galore
Thu, Jan 11 2024The 2024 rendition of CES is coming to a close, and per usual, it was full of all the funky, futuristic tech the show is long known for. It’s also full of cars and legitimately forward-thinking tech related to cars, and we were on the ground to see it all and bring photos to you in this Mega Gallery. A boatload of manufacturers attended and made big reveals, from the Star Wars-like Honda concept cars to a pickup truck from VinFast, the sort of debuts we got to see ran the gamut. Of course, there were plenty of reveals and vehicles on the floor that were even more outlandish than concepts from traditional OEMs like Honda and Mercedes. Check out this flying Xpeng car as an example. Or perhaps the flying Mansory car. Apparently, flying cars were a theme.
