Hello. Up for grabs is my beloved Jetta. It is a low mileage, Mk1 turbo diesel four door that runs and drives great. It has factory air (more on that) and CRUISE CONTROL!
I have about $6k tied up in it but I am realistic and know I can't get that back out of it.

Let me get this put of the way first: I REQUIRE a $500 NON REFUNDABLE deposit at auction end via Paypal. No if, ands, or buts. I will accept postal money orders or cash. NO personal checks.

I have taken this Jetta on about 25k miles worth of road trips since I got it and never been stranded. September of 2011 I drove it a total of about 4500 miles on a Yellowstone trip and averaged 42mpg for the duration. That is with myself, a friend, and loaded with camping gear. I routinely get 38-42MPG in town out of it depending on how I drive and outside temp, etc. And I get 50-54mpg highway without trying very hard and my best ever highway tank has been 56.7mpg (cruising back from DFW doing 55-80 depending on traffic and my attentiveness).

Please understand that this car is not a speed demon, by any stretch of the imagination, and it is an old diesel. It can not handle super high RPMs for long durations without risking snapping the timing belt or other problems. (At least not without being rebuilt with abuse in mind).

Anyways, the car, now.

What's Awesome:

*1984 Mk1 Jetta GL Turbo Diesel
*151.6k original miles
*5 speed manual transmission
*New clutch cable replaced by me
*Newish windshield (replaced by previous owner)
*Newish front left cv axle (replaced by previous owner)
*Newish headliner (replaced by previous owner)
*Newish radiator (replaced by previous owner)
*Newer bright headlamps. More natural color tint and very very bright (not blue or purple or white. Just less yellow and brighter)
*Both front struts have been replaced, by me, in the past year with Sachs Super Touring Oil Pressure inserts. They are really nice :)
*Replacement coolant reservoir (by me, original cracked)
*Replacement Y coolant hose that runs from radiator, block, and oil cooler.
*Brake overhaul in the past year by me.
*New shift linkage (replaced by me)
*Newish heater core (replaced by previous owner)
*Factory AC!
*I believe factory cruise control!
*I'm including an unused, $550 SVO conversion kit from greenconversionDOTnet/wvo! I never got around to installing this. So if you are wanting a diesel to turn into a veggie oil burner, this is prepackaged for it ;)
*Comes with 60k mile Michelin's that are at least 50-70% left.
*Comes with a replacement CD AM/FM radio that is passable... It works fine, the cars speakers all sound fantastic, but it clashes with the rest of the car plus it doesn't fit in real well. Previous owner did this. I had/have plans on replacing it eventually.
*Everything electronic works - rear defroster, all lights, dome light, dash light, accessories socket, windshield wipers, all speakers, glow plugs
*Seats are all in fantastic condition. Interior trim is mostly in fantastic condition (the driver door pockets and speaker covers have some cracks), the dash is in fantastic condition (the foam between the pieces is poking out and I haven't taken the time to fix is... I'm apparently a bit lazy).
*Replacement rims that are one size larger than factory.
*It has had new oil/fuel/airfilters put on it as well as an oil change in the last 3 months.
*Windows have, I believe, 80% tint. So not super dark but just enough. The previous owner had it done and they are very well tinted. I forgot about this.

What's Not Awesome:

*Injector pump is leaking and needs a rebuild. This JUST started happening in the past month. Car still runs fine, just seeping around the top seal on the pump.
*Factory AC needs work. It works when you fill it up but the coolant leaks out. I haven't spent the time or money to get it fixed yet. But the compressor itself worked fine when I got it and still kicks over and cools when you add a bottle. So it should be fine.
*The cruise control needs a little work. At times it functions 100% correctly and is amazing on road trips, at other times it just randomly disengages. I haven't really messed with that yet, either.
*It is a 29 year old car and as such it has it's fair share of minor dings and some scratches. Nothing major and it has NEVER been in a wreck. It has some very light surface rust in a few of the dinged areas but no other rust issues. The bottom of the car is rust free.
*The muffler has a big ol' hole in it and I broke out the baffles because they were vibrating and annoying me. I will probably get the muffler removed soon. The car sounds great without it (it has a resonator (factory!) further up the exhaust) and I do not see this as an issue.
*The syncro's for first gear are worn. This isn't my doing, I assure you :) Previous owner used it as a daily driver in Charlotte, NC, and it got some abuse. First gear does fine if you are stopped or almost stopped or the transmission is fully warmed up. Otherwise it will try grinding. Unless I am completely stopped (and it wont grind anyways), or going up a steep incline, I generally just use 2nd gear anyways.
*The driver seat is showing some wear but it has no rips or tears.
*I have the original rims with tires still on them but I forget why the previous owner swapped them out. I think one of them is warped slightly? I do not remember, but they come with the car.

Well, that is everything I can think of at the moment. I will be cleaning the car out completely over the next few days and giving it a good washing. It does seep oil out of various orifices as a 30 year old cranky small diesel is wont to do, but it does not use oil at any appreciable speed. It will need a timing belt in the next 10-20k miles.

Small 3-row crossover SUVs specifications compared on paper

Thu, May 10 2018

There's no shortage of three-row vehicles on the market for carrying seven or more people and their stuff wherever they all need to go. Just about every car company has at least one large crossover or traditional SUV with three rows of seats, and there are still plenty of minivans to pick from. But most of these vehicles are large, pricey, and frequently thirsty. Fortunately, there are still a handful of smaller crossovers that deliver 7-passenger capability in a smaller, cheaper package. We've gathered four of the small three-row set here to compare them based on space, power, fuel economy, pricing, and more. They include the very old Dodge Journey, the slightly less old Mitsubishi Outlander and Kia Sorento, and the relatively new Volkswagen Tiguan. You can see the raw numbers in the chart below, followed by a more detailed breakdown and some notes on how we like each of these vehicles. For in-depth opinions on the vehicles, be sure to check out our full reviews, and if you want to compare these with other vehicles, try out our comparison tools. Engines, transmissions and performance Interestingly, three of the four crossovers here utilize similar engines for their four-cylinder offerings. The Dodge, Kia and Mitsubishi all feature naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. Only the Volkswagen Tiguan chooses turbocharging and a smaller 2.0-liter displacement. But because of its turbocharger, the Tiguan's four-cylinder is easily the most potent, making a healthy 221 pound-feet of torque, which is more than 40 more than the Sorento, the crossover with the next most torque. The VW is also second-most powerful, just one horse behind the Sorento. The Outlander is the least powerful in the four-cylinder class. The Journey is only barely better, but it will probably feel as slow or worse thanks to its ancient 4-speed automatic. The four-cylinder Sorento and Outlander each have 6-speed automatic transmissions, and the VW has an 8-speed. The Sorento with a V6 has an 8-speed, too. View 17 Photos Moving up to the V6 class, the Outlander is once again at the bottom. It actually makes less torque than the turbo VW Tiguan. The Journey and Sorento are almost perfectly matched. The Journey makes a bit more torque; the Sorento makes a bit more power. The Journey also gets upgraded to a 6-speed automatic. Another powertrain consideration to bare in mind is whether all-wheel-drive is necessary.

Volkswagen Cross Up! headed for production after Geneva reveal

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

The last time we saw the Volkswagen Cross Up!, it was sitting out in the snow in prototype form, but the next time we'll see this slightly more rugged version of the diminutive Up! hatchback will be when it makes its production debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Looking like a micro-crossover with its raised ground clearance and black cladding, the Cross Up! will be the fourth "Cross" model for VW (after the CrossPolo, CrossGolf and CrossTouran) when it goes on sale this summer in mainland Europe (UK sales remain up in the air and US sales are highly unlikely).
Overall, the styling of the production Cross Up! has stayed fairly true to the 2011 concept car, including the front and rear fascias that offer a more rugged look, stocky 16-inch wheels and roof rack side rails. Inside, this model will get unique interior enhancements such as "Cross Up!" sill plates and an instrument panel available in red, black or silver. Like the regular Up!, the Cross Up! is powered by a 74-horsepower, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine paired to a five-speed manual transmission, and it doesn't look like all-wheel drive will be part of the picture. For more details on the upcoming Cross Up!, check out VW's press release posted below.

Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.
The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.
This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.
