Volkswagen to 'refit' 11 million diesel vehicles [UPDATE]
Tue, Sep 29 2015UPDATE: This post has been updated with an official comment from Volkswagen of America. In response to its devastating diesel-emissions scandal, Volkswagen will ask some 11 million of its customers to report into dealerships to have their diesel-powered vehicles "refitted," Reuters is reporting. According to new CEO Matthais Muller, customers will be asked to report in "in the next few days" for the refit, although it's not entirely clear exactly what the 'refit' entails. Mueller apparently made the announcement during a closed-door meeting with 1,000 of the German company's top managers, although he didn't explain exactly how the emissions-cheating software would be sorted out, or what impact it would have on the performance of mileage of the company's diesel-powered products. It's expected that the refit work will cost VW $6.5 billion, Reuters claims. "We are facing a long trudge and a lot of hard work," Muller allegedly said. "We will only be able to make progress in steps and there will be setbacks." Autoblog reached out to Volkswagen of America to see when American consumers would be asked to report to dealers, what the refit involves, how long it's expected to take to repair all the cars in the US and globally, and what impact this fix will have on the performance and fuel economy of its diesel-powered cars and SUVs. Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, VWoA wasn't too forthcoming. "We don't comment on media speculation on internal meetings," Volkswagen of America spokesman Mark Gillies told Autoblog, adding, "We don't have any information on what the remedy might be at the moment, but we are working on it as a matter of the utmost urgency."
Wagons make a bit of a comeback, with new models, sales on the rise
Thu, Jan 10 2019Consider this an official invitation to hop on the wagon bandwagon. There's still tons of room because, well, it's a wagon (and market share is still extremely small). But according to new data, the segment is growing. According to a report from Bloomberg, using data from Edmunds.com, roughly 211,600 Americans purchased wagons in 2018. That is technically down from the 237,600 sold in 2017, but wagon sales in the U.S. are up 29 percent from where they were five years ago. It's also the third year in a row that wagon sales broke the 200,000 mark. The sales trends have been somewhat representative of the availability of wagons. New models have debuted during the past 5 years and therefore offer more opportunity at more brands to buy wagons. In addition to more modest cars such as the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, several luxury and performance brands are offering wagons today, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Volvo and Buick. (Bloomberg's headlines make the point that "crossovers are for the Kardashians," and wagons are just, well, classier.) This uptick in brand-name availability, as well as extremely well-executed design on most of the wagons currently available, has helped increase the segment's desirability. That, and its ability to better accomplish the same tasks at hand while standing out from the crossover and SUV crowd. Still, the posted numbers represent a small fraction of the total vehicles sold. According to the data, wagons only held a 1.4 percent market share in 2017, the segment's best recent year. Wagons hold a steadfast place in America's past, and they're writing an interesting new story. With the downturn in traditional cars, they may continue to create an unexpected narrative. Chrysler slows minivan production, hasn't built VW Routan this year
Wed, 13 Mar 2013Chrysler has slowed production of its Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans this week, Automotive News reports. The Windsor, Ontario plant will cut its three shifts from eight hours each to four hours each in an effort "to align production with market demand," a Chrysler spokesperson told AN. Chrysler also builds the closely related Routan minivan for Volkswagen at its Ontario facility, but has not built a single example thus far in 2013.
Sales of Chrysler's minivans fell 15 percent for the first two months of 2013, and a large part of that has to do with the 26-percent drop of the Grand Caravan alone (the T&C was only down by one percent). According to Automotive News data, as of March 1, Chrysler had an unsold inventory of 24,713 Town and Country models and 18,547 Grand Caravans - a 69- and 43-day supply, respectively.
"No sense running full speed now, then have a lot of vehicles sitting around a few months down the line," Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson told AN. Full production is expected to resume again on March 18.
