1991 Westy with full camper package.  Automatic, 175K miles, runs great.  Have to sell as I'm moving.

The good:

Engine has good compression on all cylinders (with that said, Vanagons are pretty underpowered at best).
Brakes at 70%.
New fuel lines .
New fuel tank reseal kit.
Almost new, with 85%+ tread, Michelin MXT 205/70/14.
New OEM brake master cylinder as of today (and of course entirely new brake fluid in the entire system).
Almost new three window poptop tent with no holes or tears.
Air conditioning blows cold.  Converted to 134.
New air conditioning belt.
Relatively new air conditioning compressor.
New Alpine stereo with four new Alpine speakers (stereo plays Pandora from your phone, as well as your phone's music library via bluetooth).  Truly an exceptional sound, hard to believe it's a Vanagon.
Hands-free speaker system, excellent quality, that runs through the Alpine Stereo with a mike unobtrusively above the driver's head.
Total tune-up, with new distributor, distributor cap, spark plugs, spark plugs wires, ...
Doesn't leak any fluids - all systems functioning normally.
Dual battery setup.
GoWesty headlight upgrade kit (doubles the wiring to the headlights and comes with new much better than OEM light bulbs, doubling the high beams).
Other than a bit of surface rust underneath on the frame, of no consequence, easily cleaned and common even here in the desert, there's no rust, not even the usual seam rust you get on the bodies of these getting rather unique Vanagons.
Interior in great shape.
Stove and fridge work perfectly on 110 when plugged in outside and also with onboard DC, although as usual the darned propane on the stove is a real b*$&% to get started.  That's typical of those frig models in these vans.
Comes with a new owner's manual (hard to find these days).
Has a good to great condition bra for the front end.  I took it off so the photo would give a realistic view of the front end paint clearcoat fading.
Shocks are an upgrade, but I didn't put them on so don't know when they were added.  They all work fine with no signs of fading.  FYI - if you're not familiar with these vans, they have GREAT ground clearance.
Has a bumper hitch with trailer wiring, although these vans are only rated for quite small pulling jobs.  I used it as a means of putting on a bike rack and it worked great.
Brand new windshield, as a crack was developing from a road chip this winter and made it look bad, so I had it replaced.
All the electric locks work (very back, big side door and two front doors).
Electric windows in the front two seats work too.
CV joints and axles have obviously been replaced and the CV boots are in great shape, although the previous owner did this so I don't know the exact age.
New oil change.
New transmission fluid after flush (700 or so miles ago).

Needs work if you wish:
The clearcoat on the factory paint job is fading from living in a sunny climate.
Whoever installed the new tent before I bought the van didn't put the strip down over the tacks.  That's purely cosmetic, as it has no affect on keeping out rain, but it looks a bit funky.  Easy to cover up if you wish.
I've been having trouble with the electric mirrors working.  They do adjust manually.  I'm still trying to solve the issue but no promises it'll get done before it's sold, but I'll truly try.
The fiberglass bumpers are their typical mess and one end cap on the rear just broke off in the wind.  You might wish to replace them, as they're faded, cracked and as I said, even a bit broken.  They're a distraction to an otherwise nice looking and very well running van.
While this doesn't need to be fixed, the fiberglass top is obviously a replacement, as they came painted in 1991.
The fiberglass poptop also doesn't yet have the skylight put into it, although the top is ready for the skylight area to be cut out and skylight inserted (hasn't been cut out yet, so no possibility of leakage now).

A note on the mileage.  My experience over the many years with owning a few Westfalias is that these Vanagon 2.1 motors would fail around 100K or so on average, until VW fixed them coming out of the factory mid-1991 with better heads (the problem).  I can't tell if this is an upgraded 1991 original motor or if a previous owner replaced the heads.  Either way, it runs well and cannot have a heads issue given its mileage.

As for the auto transmission, these are actually Audi transmissions that VW, the sister company, used in the Vanagons.  They're excellent, tough and long lasting.  They're more reliable than the manual transmissions, which all lose the 3rd gear somewhere south of 150K and then require a rebuild, hopefully not in the middle of nowhere.

I'll try to get more pics up soon.  I absolutely love driving and camping in these vans.  My two boys have loved them and camping in them has been a big part of their oft-camping lives growing up.  But the whole gang of us is heading to another locale and I'm cleaning house, all the way up to the cars.  This van was actually purchased to fix up for a friend, but he just decided to move back to his home country and I'm selling it on the open market instead.  I've been driving it around and working on it for about a year and it's ready for any road trip you wish to take.

Please ask any questions you wish and I'll get right back to you.

I'm happy to help arrange shipping.  Also, if you're in the region and want to take a personal look, just drop me a line.

2015 VW Golf SportWagen priced from $21,395*

Thu, Feb 12 2015

Now known as the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen in the US, the long-roof version of the platform gets larger for its new generation in 2015, but it also sheds up to 137 pounds and cuts some money off the price of some models. The base now begins at $21,395, plus $820 destination on all versions, when they arrive at dealers in April. Volkswagen claims that with all of the extra standard content, buyers actually save $700 compared to the previous-gen Jetta SportWagen, despite its lower $20,995 starting price. The S trim is the least expensive model and comes with a five-speed manual and 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 170 horsepower. Paying an extra $1,100 adds a six-speed automatic. The SE for $26,995 gets the auto as standard and also includes a panoramic sunroof, front foglights, push-button start and a rearview camera. The top SEL for $29,345 further features chrome roof rails, navigation, a 12-way power driver's seat and more. In addition to the gas engine, buyers can choose the 2.0-liter TDI with 150 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque, and VW quotes EPA estimates of up to 43 miles per gallon highway fuel economy for it. All of the trims with the oil burner come with a six-speed manual, but a six-speed DSG is a $1,100 extra. The base TDI S trim starts at $24,595, which is nearly $2,000 less than the last-gen Jetta SportWagen with a diesel, and buyers also get standard push-button start and a rearview camera. The SE and SEL trims offer similar upgrades as their gasoline counterparts and ring up for $27,995 and $30,345, respectively. Of course, many buyers want extra tech for their cars, and VW is offering two packages of options for the SE and SEL trims with either engine. One adds collision warning, automatic post-collision braking and front and rear parking sensors for $695. The Lighting Package includes adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights, LED running lights and LED interior lighting for $995. VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCES PRICING OF 2015 GOLF SPORTWAGEN ? New TDI® S model reduces base Clean Diesel pricing by almost $2,000 ? Newly available driver assistance technology includes Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System ? Larger interior than outgoing Jetta SportWagen rivals compact SUVs for size ? Car will be offered with 1.8-liter turbocharged TSIĀ® gasoline and 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engines ?

VW confirms new TDI for second half of 2014 in Golf, Jetta, Passat and Beetle

Tue, 18 Mar 2014

Diesel lovers rejoice. Volkswagen is bringing the latest iteration of its 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine - dubbed the EA288 - to the 2015 model year Golf, Jetta, Passat, Beetle (2013 model pictured above) and Beetle Convertible, and the cars will be on sale in the second half of 2014.
While it shares its moniker with the old diesel, the new engine produces 150 horsepower, a 10-hp boost, and 236 pound-feet of torque. VW promises improved fuel economy as well, but it hasn't announced specifically what amount yet. The company claims that despite the same displacement, only the bore spacing is shared with the previous version. The mill includes new features like exhaust gas recirculation, an intercooler integrated into the intake manifold and low-friction camshaft bearings.
VW Group of America has had great success with diesels in the US recently. Vee-Dub and Audi sold 105,899 diesel-equipped models in 2013. It was the first time the group ever sold over 100,000 diesels in a year, and they accounted for 24 percent of sales. Scroll down to read the full press release about the announcement.

The 911 Of Hot Hatches Takes The Compact Game To New Levels
North American car buyers get a bit of a slap in the face when it comes to delivery schedules for new the Volkswagen Golf and pumped-up GTI models. We'll just repeat the old chestnut: It's worth the wait... even though it still stinks. This time around, Western Europe is taking deliveries of the new Golf as we speak, and GTI deliveries start between May and July. North America doesn't get the Mk7 Golf or GTI until about July of 2014.
So we approached our first drive of the new GTI with this chip on our shoulder: "You're making us wait? Well, then at least give us the exact car we'll be able to buy. No compromises, mein freund." And so it was that we extracted nearly all of our drive impressions from behind the wheel of what, for the United States, will technically be a model year 2015 two-door Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance with the standard six-speed manual.
