1978 Volkswagen Westfalia Transporter.  I have owned this bus for nearly 20 years. I bought it from a guy in Redding, Ca and drove it back to Minnesota to restore it. Originally it was brown and had and still has no rust. I dont really know what to say about it. I like things to work and I love my bus. My wife and I winter in Az and up until 4 years ago we drove it back and forth or trailered it from Mn every year. Now it is kept in Az and we have two young daughters. Recently we bought a mini van and a jeep and with a 2 car garage in Az somethings gotta go. Part of me wants the girls to grow up knowing it, but aside from a trip or two a year I realize its just gonna keep sitting.
I have pretty much restored the entire bus. I see an occasional bus on the internet that seems nicer but have never seen one in person. Its cool, reliable and even though most people are passing you everyone seems to be waving. I run it about 70-75 on the freeway. I have replaced every trim panel in the bus, every weatherstrip, replaced the carpeting. I undercoated the floor prior to that. Besides painting it the green it is I also pulled the top and replaced those seals and the canvas and painted the top too. I replaced the headliner. The water pump for the sink is new as are the water and electrical outlets. The fridge not only works but I removed it and had the ammonia replaced and the unit serviced before reinstalling. I also put in a new battery isolator and an optima battery for the fridge.(that way it charges when running but doesnt ever drain the starter battery when stopped) I took the bus to a vw shop and dumped almost $2000 into getting the heater going. They replaced every cable, installed the fan, underbody hoses, added missing shrouds. Prior to that we would put on down jackets and run a propane heater! It all works now. The rear bumper is new. New brakes front and rear last year. Head work and manifolds replaced a couple years ago ( I got the receipts) I have the bug netting, kids cot, toilet box, front table, front awning, shop manuals, etc) We have had so much fun stopping at salvage years over the years combing through buses finding this clip and that odd cover. Both the wiper switch and the turn signal switch are new, I wired in an extra power point. The kick panels are new and I installed little tweeters in them. The stereo is MP3, cd, auxillary port so you can watch movies and listen through the stereo or plug in your ipod. Speakers in front and rear I believe are all JVC. I installed new.( Im writing this description from Mn for my wife to post in Az. Ill be back to the veh on Thursday to answer any questions) Weber carb with adjustable fuel pressure regulator (fuel mileage much improved since doing this) I pulled the fuel tank and had it cleaned and updated the fuel tube and cap. Im sure there's  a ton more but thats all i can come up with. New floor mats and a hemp mat we lay out for the front porch. Tire chains (used only once in Yosemite) The complete front seats have both been replaced as has all the pedestal rubber around them. Mirrors too.
Lets talk about what else it could use. The horn doesn't beep (Ive installed a new horn, and fuse and cleaned the horn brushes) The speedo cable spins and the speedo works but the odometer has read 149701 for the 20 years Ive owned it. The front windshield has a crack on the lower passenger side. Thats it. Maybe one could sandblast and update the paint on the rims and the original paint on the wiper arms is a little faded. I know there's a lot of hokey stuff on the internet. This isn't. I'll answer any question you have. This is a nice bus. The fact that I'm considering selling it breaks my heart. The necklace hanging on the rear view mirror comes with it. It came with it when I bought it.

VW admits 430,000 2016 models have implausible CO2 ratings

Mon, Nov 16 2015

Volkswagen finally explained more details about its CO2 rating scandal in Europe and admitted that 430,046 of the estimated 800,000 affected vehicles with "implausible" figures came from the 2016 model year. They included some from Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW, and VW Commercial Vehicles, according to the automaker's list (as a PDF). The problem mostly impacts diesel engines, but the inventory also shows some gasoline mills. VW will next determine the accurate CO2 emissions for these vehicles, and the German Federal Vehicle and Transport Authority will supervise that process to ensure the data's veracity. The automaker will also launch websites in Europe to let owners enter their model's VIN to check whether it's affected. Because governments there often link vehicle taxes and CO2 production, the company promises to work with regulators in each country to cover any fees that result from the inaccurate figures. VW announced the CO2 scandal earlier in November and estimated the equivalent of $2.2 billion to fix it at the time. A later report claimed that a group of engineers were responsible for fabricating the emissions data. They allegedly couldn't meet reduction goals from Martin Winterkorn, and between 2013 and this spring the workers did things like overinflate the tires during testing to achieve the desired results. VW is also closer to a fix in the diesel emissions scandal. According to an anonymous insider to Bloomberg, the company has a repair for the 1.6-liter engine that's reportedly neither very complex nor expensive. German regulators would still need to approve the solution before it could roll out to owners. Next step in clarifying the CO2 issue Affected Volkswagen Group models of the current model year have been identified Customers being informed via website Discussions with the authorities have begun The Volkswagen Group reports that the vehicles of the 2016 model year affected by the CO2 issue have been identified. There is thus now clarity about the new vehicles of the current model year out in the marketplace. On 3 November 2015, the Group had already reported that irregularities may have arisen in determining the CO2 figures for type approval of around 800,000 vehicles. This was identified during its own currently ongoing investigations and had been made public. The internal investigations into the current vehicles of the 2016 model year provide results for narrowing down the actually affected vehicles with implausible CO2 figures.

Volkswagen unveils sportier Passat Performance Concept ahead of Detroit debut

Fri, 11 Jan 2013

Ahead of its official unveiling at next week's Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen has released some preliminary details and images of its Passat Performance Concept - a car that, as its name suggests, adds a little more spice to the automaker's midsize sedan formula. VW makes no mention of any production intent for this road-ready-looking sedan, simply stating that the Performance Concept is a way to "explore this practical four-door's sportier side."
It certainly doesn't look too sporty, the only visual upgrades being larger 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust, bi-xenon headlamps with VW's Advanced Front Lighting system, LED taillmaps and carbon-look mirror caps. Inside, there are carbon interior accents and two-tone leather upholstery. But no matter, the real upgrades for this mightier Passat are found below the sheetmetal.
Powering the Performance Concept is a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 250 horsepower and sending its grunt to the ground via a six-speed automatic transmission. For reference, that's 80 more horsepower than the Passat's base 2.5-liter inline-five, but 20 horsepower less than the potent 3.6-liter VR6. As for other performance upgrades, Volkswagen has fitted the car with a lowered sport suspension and revamped electronic steering, which should indeed add a bit more dynamic feedback to the already nice-driving sedan.
