It does have a few scratches, nicks and repaired rust in the doglegs (see pic). The body was blasted and painted 8 years ago. The top was redone as well. The carpets and interior are all original and have some wear consistent with a 36 year old vehicle. The frame is solid and in great shape."

Up for auction is my 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia camper, affectionately known as "Yoda", in the family.  This camper was originally sold at Triangle VW, in Durham, North Carolina, on August 20th, 1977.  With the sale comes the original warranty book (got a little wet, so condition is fair), owners manual in great condition, stove operating instructions, and the original window sticker.  The one thing I will say about this fun vehicle, is that it is complete.  It comes with the original box that sits between the two front seats, the original drivers table that attaches to the dash, the original childs cot that goes between the two front seats, the back dining table, mosquito net for the back hatch, all of the curtains including the front bay window and side curtains, stove w/ associated external propane undermount tank, light duty trailer hitch for your kayak or canoe trailer (w/light harness), refrigerator, and sink, and lastly the complete factory tent that attaches to the camper.  The tent is complete and in great condition and 100% complete w/ no tears, no fade, no broken clips (did not see much use in it's life).

I have had this camper for a little over a year, and have clocked about 5,000 miles during last summer and this spring.  I have not driven it during the winter, and it was stored in a heated garage.  This is an Eastern camper, with the first part of it's life in North Carolina area.  The camper had the body blasted and repainted in 2005.  At that time there was some bubbling in the front doglegs that was repaired and the battery area had new trays welded in.  The dogleg repair has some cracking that has returned (see pic as it is not bad, but there).  The rest of the body is quite solid and all doors and hatches as well.  The bottom of the body where the panels come together looks great all around.  The front floor has no issues.  The roof and rain gutters are in great shape as well.  When the body was painted all the window rubber was replaced, as well as the front windshield.  The side louver window screens were replaced this spring.  The rims were blasted and powder coated this spring and look great.  The tires have approx 65% of tread life left.

The interior is all original.  The seats and mounted curtains have some fade on the exterior facing side due to age.  The front curtain is unfaded and perfect.  The driver seat has wear on the bolster and sitting surface, and would need to be replaced to be perfect.  I am including approx 2 yards of original plaid fabric with the sale that I was going to use, but ran out of time. Or you can go on-line and buy new covers (Bus Boys).  The carpet is all original and has held up well, but has some wear under the driver, and a little fade in the back area.  The cabinets are all original and look good.  There are a couple of chips in the wood grain cover material and maybe a little fade (see pics).  The door panels are original, and are in good condition, the passenger side has a little wavey by the vent.  The pop-up top is in good condition, and has one small cut about 1 inch long (see pic for red tape over cut).  The pop top itself was recoated in 2005 when the rest of the bus was completed.   I also installed a new stereo (Vintage look) with I-Pod adapter and 4 new Kenwood speakers, this spring.  Please review the pictures, I am being a bit picky, but I want the new owner to be satisfied and truly enjoy "Yoda".

The engine was replaced with a fully rebuilt hydraulic lifter motor.  It has less than 15,000 miles on it and runs great.  Starts up with no issue.  No smoke on start up, even after sitting. I run down the highway at 55-60 mph with no issue,...and no worries.  The motor still retains it's original fuel injection, and has not given me any issues.  I just got back from an 800 mile camping trip, and smiled the whole way.  I use premium full, and get approx 20-21 mpg fully loaded.

Brakes work fine with no issue, can be a little squeaky at times, I believe from sitting.  This is not intended to be my daily driver.  The hardware (rotors/drum/pads) were fully replaced approx 6000 miles ago.

All lights (interior and exterior) and wipers work fine with no issue.

Here is a list of items that have been done:
Alternator less than 4000 miles ago
Battery (Interstate) replaced last spring
New Stereo w/ 4 new Kenwood speakers this spring
Oil change and Filter (Mahle) 1000 miles ago
New spark plugs, cap, ignition rotor, air filter 1000 miles ago
New exhaust 6,000 miles ago
New Rotors, Pads and Drums 6,000 miles ago
New right CV joint 6,000 miles ago
New Front shocks 10,000 miles ago

This is a great camper, and in very good condition for a 36 year old car.  Please review the pictures and ask if you want any additional pictures to help make your decision.  This is not a rotisserie restoration garage queen, but rather a loved, well taken care of, and complete vehicle that will bring a smile to your face, and all those that pass by waving and giving a thumbs up.  I would not hesitate to drive "Yoda" to California tomorrow, that is how confident I am in the vehicle.

I love this camper, but I have other interests in life, and not enough time.

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions.  Due to the age of my camper, I must sell it with no warranties or guaranties......, expressed, implied or otherwise.  A $500 deposit is due at the end of the auction within 48 hours.  Payment must be made in full before the camper is picked up.  I can pick up the lucky winner at Milwaukee or OHare airports at no charge if needed.  You can fly in and drive/camp your way home.  If shipping the bus, I can assist with the pick-up, but all set-up and costs associated with shipping are the responsibility of the purchaser.

Good luck bidding on my "Yoda"

Are more diesel scandals about to erupt?

Fri, Nov 20 2015

More automakers may soon be embroiled, like Volkswagen, in diesel emissions scandals. According to the Daily Kanban, either the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) or the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) will soon announce from 10 to 15 more cases of automakers cheating national diesel emissions rules. The outlet says three of the incidents are attributed to Opel. Studies conducted by the DUH, the University of Applied Sciences in Bern, Switzerland, and the UK's Leeds University found that Opel's diesel Zafira, Corsa, and Vectra models emit more NOx than European regulations allow when tested in ways that go beyond the European testing protocol, such as when done on a four-wheel rolling road instead of a two-wheel rolling road. Opel said the accusations had no merit. Specifically on the Zafira, the DUH asked Opel about the emissions findings, and Opel said that no General Motors software contains any measures to enable cheating. Opel then tested a Zafira of its own "both on a two- and a four-wheel roller dynamometer," finding that "The emission behavior determined in each case does not differ from one another." That makes this a case of he-said-she-said for the moment. The Daily Kanban's sources say the cheating methods "range from the crude to the highly sophisticated," with those at the latter end complex enough to render Volkswagen's methods "pedestrian." As for any automakers who might be named, the matter of real-world emissions exceeding a legal limit doesn't mean a carmaker has designed systems that cheat, it might mean the company designed the car to pass a test. 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf

Mon, Feb 9 2015

Until now, the only way you could get the words "electric" and "Golf" so close together was the put the word "cart" after them. Knowing that the e-Golf would be the next step in Volkswagen's tilt at electrification, the automaker designed the MkVII platform to fit a myriad of drivetrains, none of which would require purchasers to sacrifice the Golf-ness that makes the best-selling car in Europe, not to mention a huge hit here in the States. In the e-Golf that means power electronics underhood and an amoeba-shaped battery that fits in the floorpan, between the axles, where it won't ooze into the interior space. We look at the e-Golf as another kind of crossover: traditional cars that just happen to be electric, offering a taste of the new EV religion in soothing, recognizable garb. We had one for a week in its natural habitat, Los Angeles and the surrounding area. We really like the fact that, powertrain aside, it maintains everything we dig about the Golf. The caveat is that this is an EV first and a Golf second – you must first address the EV challenges and live within EV constraints, then you can enjoy the Golf bits. Even so, it's the electric car this writer would buy once we acquired the lifestyle to make proper use of it. The most noticeable exterior change to the e-Golf are 16-inch Astana wheels wrapped in 205-series tires that reduce rolling resistance by ten percent. Once you've cottoned on to that, the other alterations become apparent: the blue trim strip underlining the radiator grille, the redesigned bumper with the C-shaped decoration LED lights and the full-LED headlamps above them, the little blue "e" in the model name on the rear hatch. You won't notice the underbody paneling, that the frontal area of the e-Golf is ten percent smaller than that of a traditional Golf, that the radiator is closed off, or the reshaped rear spoiler and vanes on the C-pillars. Volkswagen says this results in a ten-percent drop in drag, getting the coefficient down to 0.281, but the standard Golf is also listed at 0.28. The TSI and TDI are 0.29. No matter those numbers, the point is the e-Golf looks just like... a Golf. The 12,000-rpm, 85-kW electric motor equates to 115 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, which compares to 146 hp and 236 lb-ft from the 2.0-liter diesel Golf. It takes 4.2 seconds to get to 37 miles per hour, 10.4 seconds to hit 62 mph, and the little guy tops out at 87 mph.

As VW electrifies, it questions the role of Lamborghini, Bugatti, Ducati

Wed, Sep 30 2020

FRANKFURT — Volkswagen needs to change to stay relevant in the electric and digital vehicle era and will announce "important steps" to that end before the close of the year, Chief Executive Herbert Diess said on Wednesday. "Volkswagen needs to change: From a collection of valuable brands and fascinating combustion-engine products that thrill customers with superb engineering — to a digital company that reliably operates millions of mobility devices worldwide," Diess told shareholders at the company's virtual general meeting. Vehicles need to stay in contact with customers, offer new services and comfort functions on a weekly or even daily basis, he said. "We will take further important steps to set the course for this in the rest of 2020," Diess said. Senior executives told Reuters the company is reviewing what role its high-performance brands Lamborghini, Bugatti and Ducati will play as the company increasingly focuses on electric, digital and autonomous vehicles. Volkswagen, which also owns VW, Audi, Porsche, Seat and Skoda, is looking at whether it has the resources to accelerate development of electric platforms for smaller brands at a time it is investing billions to transform its more mainstream cars. Asked whether Ducati, which is known for making noisy combustion-engined motorbikes, has an electric future, Markus Duesmann, who oversees research and development for the group, said: "It will not take long until we see an electric Ducati." Whether Ducati, which is a medium-sized premium motorbike brand, would offer an electric variant, depends on whether a bike could offer range comparable to a combustion-engined variant, Duesmann said. Advances are being made in battery technology which could make this possible, he added. Separately Frank Witter, the company's chief financial officer, in response to a question about whether a sale of Lamborghini is planned, said Volkswagen does not comment on speculation about potential divestments. Lamborghini's Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali this week announced his departure from the sports car maker to take on a new job as president of Formula One. VW needs cash Volkswagen is reviewing the future of these three high-performance brands as part of broader quest for more economies of scale as it shifts to mass producing electric cars, senior executives told Reuters.
