1961 23-Window VW Bus for sale

I am fortunate to offer such a pristine example of a 23 Window VW Bus for sale. Many view the 23 Window Deluxe as the most prized VW Bus ever made. Nothing beats the view out the sunroof and skylights on a beautiful day driving through the mountains, country or woods. Just 64,986 of these Deluxe 23 Window Microbuses were made during all years of production 1951-1963. To put that in perspective, a total of only 76,000 Porsche 356s were produced, and you know how rare it is to see one of those on the road today. It is a very special and rare opportunity indeed to find a VW 23 Window for sale in this condition.

I purchased this bus from Florida in 2010. The previous owner used to drive this bus to the beach to sell hats he made out of palm leaves. (He would climb the trees, grab palms and make the hats right in this van.) I promised the previous owner I would treat the bus to a first class restoration. So after a year of raising funds, I sent the bus to Jeff Gagnon of Vintage VW in Sioux Falls, SD to start the restoration. Over the following two and a half years Jeff performed a complete rotisserie restoration. The end result is breathtaking. Jeff specializes in restoring rare and unique classic VW Buses. He restored my beautiful dove blue 1959 Double Door Panel Van that can be found in the Cars Sold section of my Sunset Classics Web Site. He also restored a Velvet Green '66 Deluxe Bus of mine that is also in the Cars Sold section of my Site. His paint and bodywork are unrivaled. He said this '61 Samba Bus is the straightest VW Bus he's ever built. The long sides shine like a flat mirror and the paint finish and bodywork are far nicer than even when this bus was brand new.

The restoration on this 23 Window VW Bus was just completed in May of 2014. The bus has been driven just a few test miles since. I trailered the bus to the Bug In VW Show June 1st and the bus took first place in stock pre '67 VW Buses. An article on the show including photos of this bus will be featured in the October issue of Hot VWs magazine.

The "birth certificate" from the VW Factory in Germany confirms that this Deluxe Samba was manufactured August 24th, 1960. Model years were started in August of the previous year, so even though this bus was made in 1960 it is a 1961 model year. There is virtually no difference between the '60-'61 model years other than a bump in engine horsepower from 36 to 40. That bump wasn't enough to help the original buses get out of their own way (let alone climb a hill without downshifting) so you will be pleased to learn this bus has a very strong and reconditioned engine featuring duel 40mm IDF carburetors and electronic ignition. Driving this Deluxe VW Bus will require less maintenance and is far more convenient than one with a very weak original hp engine. Merging and keeping up with traffic in this Deluxe Bus will be easy and enjoyable.

Every nut and bolt was taken off and the shell was sandblasted to bare metal. No expense was spared in the restoration. There isn't a nicer 23 Window VW Bus out there for sale. This is an investment quality vehicle that will remain at the top of market as values continue to rise over time. I wouldn't be surprised if these rare 23 Window Deluxe Sambas topped a half million dollars in the coming decade. Nice examples have already topped $200k. 2011 saw a 1963 23-Window Samba sell for $217,800 at the Barrett Jackson auction if you include the buyer's premium. Bid to win this rare Deluxe 23 Window Bus and avoid the costly 8% buyers fee charged by the major auction houses.

Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE concept previews new midsize CUV... again

Sun, Jan 11 2015

Volkswagen has taken a big step towards the long-awaited second model to be built at its Chattanooga, TN factory, introducing the two-row Cross Coupe GTE Concept at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. The relatively handsome two-row crossover borrows its basic styling language from the CrossBlue Concept that launched at the 2013 Detroit show (that we later had a brief chance to drive), and the CrossBlue Coupe from that year's Shanghai Motor Show. To be entirely frank, it just looks like a much more production-ready version of the Shanghai concept. The more aggressive elements of that model, like its rear taillights, rounded wheel arches, and aggressive front and rear fascias, have been toned down considerably. In other words, this concept almost wouldn't look out of place on the average road. Changes in the cabin are similarly minor, with the same basic design as the CrossBlue, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. While it's still quite clearly a concept car interior, it's not hard to imagine VW transitioning this cockpit into a production model. Riding atop the Volkswagen Group's MQB architecture – making it a relative, albeit distant, of cars like the VW Golf, Audi TT and the Euro-market Passat – the Cross Coupe GTE is motivated by a 3.6-liter VR6 that's been mated to not one, but two electric motors (one on each axle). The gas engine offers up 276 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the front axle's electric motor generates 54 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, and the rear can deliver a more robust 114 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. That cacophony can be easily boiled down to this: the Cross Coupe GTE has a total system output of 355 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque, which is good enough to get the five-seater to 60 miles per hour in six seconds, on to a top speed of 130 miles per hour. As a plug-in hybrid, though, there's more to the Cross Coupe GTE then just its power output. Range plays a big role, and in that regard, this concept is fairly average. It can cover 20 miles when its 14.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery is charged up. Beyond that, the drivetrain can be set to a number of modes to optimize the behavior of plug-in-hybrid powertrain. In E-Mode, which can be locked in via a battery hold/battery charge mode, all 20 miles of range are available, although the Cross Coupe's driver will only have the 114-hp rear axle electric motor to work with.

US-spec 2015 Volkswagen Golf and GTI to finally debut in New York

Tue, 12 Mar 2013

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf is hardly new to us. In fact, we've already driven it. And elsewhere in the world, the new Golf is already winning awards. Even so, we still have yet to see the US-spec version of the car, though that won't be the case much longer. As part of the New York Auto Show festivities later this month, Volkswagen will finally show off the 2015 Golf models destined for our shores.
Three different versions of the Golf will debut under the lights of New York City's Javits Center: the turbocharged TSI, oil-sipping TDI and hotter GTI. The first model in that list uses Volkswagen's new 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, replacing the outgoing 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline five-cylinder. The latter two models use familiar engines: the 2.0-liter TDI diesel and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, respectively.
Even though the new Golf officially debuts later this month, it won't go on sale in the US until the first quarter of 2014. We'll be waiting patiently.

VW's Skoda says Ukraine partner making wire harnesses again

Tue, Mar 22 2022

PRAGUE — Skoda Auto, part of the Volkswagen Group, said on Tuesday its supply partner in Ukraine had decided to restart production of wire harnesses which should allow the Czech carmaker to resume production of its electric ENYAQ iV model. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has added to supply chain problems for global automakers — which were already struggling with semiconductor shortages that have cut production — with a break in deliveries of wire harnesses from the war-torn country. While Skoda, the Czech Republic's biggest exporter, said it expects the supply of semiconductors to improve in the second half of 2022, it said the war in Ukraine and supply bottlenecks will put a significant burden on its operating business. Skoda's 2021 deliveries fell 12.6% year-on-year and earlier this month it stopped production of the ENYAQ because of harness shortages, saying that two other models were at risk because of the lack of availability of the component. "Our partner ... in Ukraine decided to restart production of wire harnesses this week, with full service and full security for workers there," Karsten Schnake, Skoda's board member for purchasing, said during its online 2021 earnings presentation. Wire harnesses form a key part of a car's electrical system, which group and guide cables inside the vehicle. "We decided to double the production in case something is going wrong, and this production will be ramped up in an alternative factory," Schnake said, adding that work there would start in three or four weeks. "Hopefully we can restart production of ENYAQ one or two weeks later when we have wire harnesses," Schnake said. Skoda delivered 878,200 cars worldwide in 2021, the first time that this had fallen below the 1 million mark since 2013. Nevertheless, the VW group brand's sales revenue rose 3.9% to 17.7 billion euros ($19.5 billion) in 2021 and operating profit rose 43.2% to 1.1 billion euros ($1 billion) as it took cost measures. Skoda did not give a financial or production outlook, saying there were still considerable uncertainties as a result of the conflict in Ukraine and the impact on its Russian operations. Skoda, like VW, has suspended production and other business activities in Russia, which was its second-largest market last year, with 90,400 vehicles delivered.
