I bought this single cab from a VW guy in Wisconsin who drove it from Colorado. I drive it almost on a daily basis and love it.  A new 1600 DP engine with 10,000 +/- miles (not rebuilt, but new) was installed by previous owner. All engine parts were brand new: carburetor, generator, distributor, clutch, flywheel, etc. when changed about 6 years ago. Rebuilt transaxle reduction box to reduction box.  A new gas tank with fuel sender was also installed with original fuel petcock fully functioning when engine was replaced. I have taken steps to make sure it is complete and correct. Treasure chest locks have been replaced(those are nearly impossible to locate) with original latches and all keys, including door, are matching and are correct. A 1961 sapphire radio with correct knobs has been installed with correct speaker and bracket. All new head, door and kick panels installed. A rebuilt wiper motor. The truck has been converted to 12 volt. Everything works: wipers, lights, horn, blinkers, Speedo glow and warning lights. The heat works. The truck is unaltered. The dash is uncut, a gas gauge never installed at factory. Only that tacky tachometer you see in the picture and which I keep saying I will remove, is the only add-on to the truck. The provenance of this truck is dry southern Colorado and thus the amount of rust for the year is limited to the expected rot. I did my best to show it in the pictures.

What is wrong and what needs to be done...
As you can see from the pictures, the front bumper is painted black. I did the rear one already. I have the bars and the guards, it needs assembly and paint. It has bondo. The paint job is passable but scratched, cheap and crappy. Passenger side windshield glass is cracked. Rust bubbles in places, rust in a couple places on gate, treasure chest door and driver's side floor (see pictures). Bed is solid but rough. Needs body work and paint job. Slow oil leak that requires removing engine to address which I was planning on doing when I did the body work. Began leaking brake fluid this winter, I haven't checked so don't know the extent of the problem.

I have been replacing with original parts to bring back to 100% stock and I am practically done. My plan was to do the body work this year and finish it off. Unfortunately a house fire ( I lost it all including a 1963 ragtop) has left me with zero time, energy and money to finish. You can use it like I do to get around or finish the job. Just know that everything is there and you won't be looking for many parts. This is an undisturbed pretty much original Single Cab. The tail lights are correct. Many pre-62 type II out there have been retro fitted with the cheaper oval tail lights or had the dash chopped to fit radios.  It pains me to sell before I am done, but I have to move on. A VW project is not in my near future and this is killing me since I have owned a VW or another since I was 16, and that was a long time ago.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Quick Spin [w/video]

Thu, Jul 9 2015

There are two particularly great things about diesel-powered cars: torque and range. The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI has both in spades. We put 190 miles on our test car, and upon return, the computer claimed we still had 490 miles to go. We weren't even averaging the EPA-estimaged 29 miles per gallon highway. Plus, that's in a sport-utility vehicle with tons of room and a whopping 406 pound-feet of torque. That said, our most recent adventure with the Touareg wasn't totally positive. This thing feels decidedly long in the tooth, despite a 2014 refresh. Driving Notes The Touareg TDI's powertrain really is the star of the show. The 3.0-liter, turbodiesel V6 has been in service since 2009, but it's still a dynamite engine. With 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which can be called upon at just 2,000 rpm, there's no shortage of thrust under your right foot. Turbo lag is an issue when you get aggressive with the throttle, but don't drive like a boob and you'll be fine. ZF's critically acclaimed eight-speed automatic delivers that power to all four wheels. But where other ZF-equipped vehicles deliver a crisper, sharper character, the TDI's trans is tuned for a far more relaxed driving experience. Upshifts are leisurely; the eight-speed keeps you right in the thick of the Touareg's broad torque curve. The suspension tuning follows a similar philosophy. It's far more comfortable than dynamic, soaking up all manner of bumps and general imperfections with aplomb. That said, the Touareg does not feel floaty or disconnected – just smooth. The greasy bits of the Touareg are very desirable, but the package they're wrapped in is less so. It's not that the interior or exterior designs are necessarily bad – fans of Earth tones will love our tester's Black Oak Brown Metallic paint and Cornsilk Beige interior – they're just kind of bland, or anonymous. The switchgear and buttons come from the Volkswagen parts bin, and while they're fine on a $20,000 Golf, these pieces aren't as appropriate in a vehicle that starts at more than twice the price. The dash plastics and faux wood don't look as nice as what's inside an Acura MDX, or even a Jeep Grand Cherokee. This mid-level Touareg TDI Lux starts at $57,580.

The Volkswagen Group switches official language to English

Wed, Dec 14 2016

The Volkswagen Group can't be fairly thought of as entirely German anymore, so the news that the company is switching its official language to English to help attract managers and executives is a rational, if surprising, decision. While many VW Group companies are still staidly German in character and culture, consider the other companies that it controls: Bentley (British), Bugatti (French), Ducati and Lamborghini (Italian), Skoda (Czech), Scania trucks (Swedish), and SEAT (Spanish). Not to mention the large Volkswagen Group of America operation, which constructs cars in Chattanooga, TN. Volkswagen's explicit motivation is to improve management recruitment – making sure the company isn't losing out on candidates for important positions because they can't speak German – and that's inherently sensible in a globalized economy. Particularly considering, like it or lump it, that English is the lingua franca of said global economy. It also should make it inherently easier to communicate between its world-wide subsidiaries and coordinate operations. It's hard to say for sure if this will have any impact on the consumer, although it's easy to see the benefits if, say, VW Group hires some American product planners or engineers and they push for features and designs that more closely suit American needs. After all, the US is a hugely important market for any manufacturer, and so the switch to English almost certainly has something to do with the outsized influence of the US in the global economy. And there doesn't seem to be a downside from a purely rational perspective, although it could mean that the Group's corporate culture becomes less German. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your perspective. Autoblog Minute: VW Emissions Scandal, New Ford Super-Duty

Fri, Sep 25 2015

We got our first looks at look at Ford's new Super Duty truck lineup this week but it's Volkswagen that has been dominating the news cycle, as Matthias Muller is named CEO of the embattled automaker. Autoblog's Senior editor Greg Migliore reports on the recap edition of Autoblog Minute. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] We got our first looks at look at Ford's new Super Duty truck lineup this week but it's Volkswagen that has dominated the news cycle as Matthias Muller is named CEO of the embattled automaker. I'm Senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. Super Duty is new for 2017. Our first look at these heavy duty trucks showed increased cab space for passengers, and [00:00:30] a lighter aluminum frame. Ford insists these changes will provide customers with increased towing capacity and fuel efficiency. The all-new Super Duty will be built at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, and it goes on sale in late 2016. Now, in case you missed it Volkswagen is under fire for gaming EPA emissions testing. A massive government recall is in the works and the world's top-selling automaker is looking at significant losses in both car sales and its stock value. On top of losing billions of dollars, Volkswagen is also facing [00:01:00] legal issues. And this week we saw Martin Winterkorn step down as CEO of Volkswagen Group. These changes mark just the beginning of VW's arduous process of rebuilding consumer trust. Those are the highlights from the week that was. Be sure to check out my full recap this Saturday, plus some added insight on the Buick Cascada and its pricing strategy. For Autoblog, I'm Greg Migliore.
