I purchased this VW Beetle Turbo S new in March, 2003, from Archer Volkswagen in Houston, Texas. It has been maintained by authorized Volkswagen dealers according to the prescribed maintenance schedule and has never been smoked in. I have all records and manuals for the car, including all maintenance documents and records of all gasoline and incidental expenses, as well as two remote keys and one valet key. EPA mileage estimates were 23 mpg city/30 mpg highway. My typical gas mileage has been in the 26-28 mpg range. Current odometer reading is 105,500 - approximately 85% highway miles. Exterior is in superb condition with no dents or dings and paint that shines like new (see pictures). The tires are the same model Michelin as original equipment with plenty of tread left. Interior is excellent, showing a bit more wear than exterior but still very fine (also see pictures). It would be difficult to find a better example of this model. I would not hesitate to get in and drive it across the country tomorrow.
The AutoCheck score for this vehicle is 80. (Similar vehicles typically range from 34-58.)
The Turbo S model was a limited production edition added to the Volkswagen lineup in 2002 and sold until 2004. It was offered in four colors (silver, red, black, and platinum gray). The front and rear wear model-specific facia (supposedly designed by Porsche) and it was equipped with 17-in alloy wheels with 225/45 Michelin tires. The interiors were all identical with black leather sport seats with gray leather inserts. The door panels also have inserts of this gray leather. The upgraded interior included stainless steel pedals and aluminum accents on the shift knob and steering wheel. The dash lighting was white on black (a change from the attractive-but-hard-to-read blue and red of the standard models). The biggest changes were under the surface. The already excellent 1.8 liter 20-valve turbocharged 4 cylinder was upgraded with higher boost and different computer mapping to produce 180 hp and 173 lb-ft of torque (up from 150 and 162 on regular turbo models). All were equipped with a precise-shifting 6-sp manual transmission (a first for US Volkswagens) and upgraded sport suspension and brakes. Turbo S models came fully equipped with no options available. Standard equipment included air conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control, ESP (also a first for US Volkswagens), ABS, leather upholstery, heated seats and mirrors, power moonroof, power automatic rear spoiler, and an 8-speaker Monsoon sound system (in 2003 this came with a cassette player, though a Volkswagen CD radio will slide right in or a CD changer can be easily added). The end result was a big improvement in the fun-to-drive factor and a car that is very stable on the highway, handles securely on curvy roads and feels quicker than it actually is.$500 deposit due within 48 hours of winning bid (via PayPal) with the balance due within 7 days. Vehicle is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. I may be able to assist with making arrangements for shipping at my discretion but will not be responsible for the vehicle once it is on the truck. I have done my best to describe the vehicle as accurately as possible. This is, of course, a used car, and no one can predict the future. The vehicle is sold as is, where is and there is no warranty on this vehicle, express or implied. Feel free to ask any questions I may not have answered above.

Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes also under diesel emissions scrutiny
Sat, Oct 10 2015The controversy over Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal isn't limited to the US. In Europe, where diesel engines are far more popular, the issue is shining a harsh light on the NEDC emissions test. As already known, the evaluation does a poor job of reflecting real-world production of NOx, and it appears a significant number of automakers are affected. The Guardian in the UK has been reporting on real-world test results from a company called Emissions Analytics. After the latest round of checks, vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi were found to generate far more NOx than they should. The newspaper also published similar results for Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Fiat, Volvo, Jeep, Citroen, VW, and Audi. On average, the figures are about four times over the limit of producing the pollutant. Unlike VW and its defeat device, these automakers aren't actually breaking the rules. The vehicles perform up to the NEDC lab test for emissions, but those results simply aren't translated to the street. "The VW issue in the US was purely the trigger which threw light on a slightly different problem in the EU - widespread legal over-emissions," Nick Molden from Emissions Analytics said to The Guardian. A big fight to decide the future of this issue appears to be on the horizon. Automakers claim that they can't meet the next round of tightening emissions regulations and are asking for compromises. Although, spokespeople for Mercedes and Honda told The Guardian that the brands would be in favor of the stricter rules. Meanwhile, some European governments began backtracking their support of diesels well before this scandal came to light. The added scrutiny certain hasn't helped the future of the oil-burner. Chief designer Walter de Silva out at Volkswagen
Fri, Nov 6 2015After decades of penning beautiful machines, Volkswagen Group design boss Walter de Silva will retire at the end of November but will still hold an advisory role. He has led the styling for the automotive giant's brands since 2007. The company's statement didn't announce a successor for him. De Silva began his design career at Fiat in 1972 and led styling at Alfa Romeo from 1986 to 1998. He first joined VW Group with Seat but made a big splash at Audi in 2002. His work there included the sixth-generation A6, A5, and the fantastic R8. Later, he created a great take on the classic Leica M9 camera, too. VW praised de Silva's creation of a design culture that spanned its division but still allowed for creativity within each one. "Walter de Silva epitomizes creativity and the Italian sense of beauty and style on the one hand and thoroughness, a systematic approach and discipline on the other," CEO Matthias Muller said in the announcement. De Silva's retirement could bring a major change in the way VW Group organizes its studios, according to Automotive News. The automaker reportedly wants to cut its annual styling budget and might not seek a replacement for him. Walter Maria de Silva takes retirement Head of Group Design established common design culture across all brands while retaining creative autonomy of each individual brand Walter Maria de Silva Walter Maria de Silva Walter Maria de Silva (64), Head of Group Design, is retiring with effect from the end of November. De Silva assumed design responsibility for all passenger car brands within the Volkswagen Group in February 2007. Walter de Silva will continue his links with the Group in an advisory capacity. Walter Maria de Silva was born in Lecco (Italy) on February 27, 1951 and joined the Volkswagen Group 17 years ago when he became Head of the SEAT Design Centre in 1998. He was put in charge of the design of the Audi brand group, including the brands Audi, Lamborghini and SEAT, in 2002. His new design language with Audi was epitomised by the 6th generation of the Audi A6 and Audi A5 Coupe. He was appointed Head of Group Design at Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft in 2007. Walter de Silva saw the main focus of his work as design chief in establishing and nurturing a common design culture across all brands, which nevertheless allows each brand to retain a high degree of creative autonomy.
The best Super Bowl car commercials from the last 5 years
Wed, Jan 28 2015If you've been dipping into the Autoblog feed over the past days and weeks, you wouldn't even have to be a sports fan to know the Super Bowl is coming up. Automakers have been teasing their spots for the big game, dropping them days early, fully-formed onto the Internet and otherwise trying to amp up the multi-million-dollar outlays that they've made for air time on the biggest advertising day of the year. And, we're into it. The lead up to the Super Bowl is almost akin to a mini auto show around these parts; with automakers being amongst the most prolific advertisers on these special Sundays. The crop of ads from 2015 looks as strong as ever, but we thought we'd take a quick look back at some of our favorite spots from the last five years. Take a look at our picks – created from a very informal polling of Autoblog editors and presented in no particular order – and then tell us about your recent faves, in Comments. Chrysler, Imported From Detroit Chrysler, Eminem and a lingering pan shot of "The Fist" – it doesn't get much more Motown than 2011's Imported From Detroit. With the weight of our staffers hailing from in and around The D, it's no wonder that our memories still favor this epic Super Bowl commercial (even though the car it was shilling was crap). Imported really set the tone for later Chrysler ads, too, repeated the formula: celebrity endorsement + dramatic copy + dash of jingoism = pulled car-guy heartstrings. Mercedes-Benz, Soul teaser with Kate Upton One of our favorite Super Bowl commercials (and yours, based on the insane number of views you logged) didn't even technically air during the game. Mercedes-Benz teased its eventual spot Soul with 90-seconds worth of Kate Upton threatening to do her best Joy Harmon impression. (Teaser indeed.) It doesn't win points for cleverness, use of music, acting, or any compelling carness, but it proved that Mercedes' advertisers knew how to make a splash in the Internet Age. And, hey, it's still classier than every GoDaddy commercial. Kia, A Dream Car. For Real Life Like the Mercedes video above, the initial draw here is a pretty lady; in this case the always stunning Adriana Lima. But this Kia commercial really delivers the extra effort we expect while scarfing crabby snacks and homemades, too. First of all, Motley Crue. Second, a cowboy on a bucking rhino. Enjoy yet again.
