Volkswagen Golf, Ford F-150 named 2015 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year

Mon, Jan 12 2015

Congratulations, Volkswagen Golf/GTI and Ford F-150. You've just been named the 2015 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year, kicking off the first press day of the Detroit Auto Show. The Golf faced some seriously stiff competition from its runners-up, the Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis. But the Golf has been a highly awarded vehicle since its launch, including recently being named Motor Trend's Car of the Year. As for the Truck/Utility award, it wasn't immediately clear that the aluminum-bodied Ford F-150 would win the North American honor, topping the Chevrolet Colorado and Lincoln MKC. The Chevy, after all, has been widely praised since arriving this fall, including taking home MT's Truck of the Year award. In 2014, Chevrolet had a sweep of the NACTOY awards, with the Corvette Stingray and Silverado taking top honors. Here's a look at the 2015 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year voting breakdown. As you can see, it wasn't exactly neck and neck. Car of the Year Volkswagen Golf/GTI – 256 points Ford Mustang – 204 points Hyundai Genesis – 110 points Truck/Utility of the Year Ford F-150 – 297 points Chevrolet Colorado – 205 points Lincoln MKC – 68 points The winners were determined by the votes of 57 North American jurors who work in all forms of media – magazine, newspaper, television, online and radio, and their ballots were tabulated in secret by accounting firm Deloitte & Touche. Autoblog editors Sharon Carty and Chris Paukert are members of the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year jury. VW App-Connect gets celeb-studded campaign

Sat, Sep 19 2015

Volkswagen is hoping that some celebrity faces help get the word out about App-Connect in the German brand's latest models with the MIB II infotainment system. The humorous, new commercial titled Party (above) stars Adam Scott, Michael Pena, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and the three of them are using voice commands and the touchscreen to show off the tech while planning a party. Another 30-second commercial titled Sorry with the three guys is coming along soon, as well, to advertise it even more. App-Connect is part of VW's adoption of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink. By supporting all three standards, pretty much every smartphone user can plug into the vehicle's infotainment system. The tech is already available on the 2016 Tiguan and Golf R but is rolling out to all of the German brand's vehicles this model year, except for the Touareg and Eos. VOLKSWAGEN DEMONSTRATES ADVANCED CONNECTIVITY IN NEW CELEBRITY-DRIVEN MARKETING CAMPAIGN Sep 17, 2015 First brand to offer all three major smartphone integration platforms; available on virtually every model and nearly every trim Highlights App-Connect, a new technology which makes compatible smartphone integration seamless through Apple CarPlay®, Google Android Auto™, and MirrorLink® Multimedia Campaign stars Hollywood celebrities Michael Pena, Adam Scott and Christopher Mintz-Plasse Herndon, Va. – Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced the release of a new advertising campaign that highlights the brand's all-new infotainment system, MIB II, and its advanced smartphone integration technology, App-Connect. As part of Volkswagen's available Car-Net® suite of connectivity offerings, App-Connect allows for seamless integration of compatible smartphones across Apple CarPlay®, Google Android Auto™ and MirrorLink®; making it the first automaker to do so. The campaign kicks off with two 30-second television commercials, titled "Party" and "Sorry" starring Adam Scott, Michael Pena and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. In each spot, the celebrities navigate App-Connect by utilizing voice commands, the vehicle's touchscreen, and steering wheel controls.

Production Volkswagen Taigun crossover caught in patent filing?

Wed, 01 May 2013

Volkswagen brought an angular, bulldog-like small crossover concept called Taigun to the São Paulo motor show last year, claiming that it wanted to gauge interest in the design before making a decision about production. If a new report with alleged leaked patent images is to be believed, then, interest must have been pretty high.
China's Auto.Sohu.com has published this group of Taigun images, claiming that they have been sourced from the Chinese patent office and that the subcompact VW utility based on the Up! has been cleared for production.
If all of that is true, and if these images are representative of the final product, you'll see that designers haven't done much to alter the concept car's appearance. Comparing, shot for shot, with the images we have from Brazil, we see that even small details like roof rack-mounted lights and exhaust tips integrated in the rear fascia have been carried over. Take a closer look for yourself in the attached galleries.
