ALL PARTS were saved for re-assembly. Windshield has a crack, but is intact. Missing: battery, center caps and lug nut covers for wheels, original tool kit pouch, spare wheel, radio. Rare dealer-installed AC parts are all here!"

This is the Limited Edition bug that commemorates Volkswagen's Beetle total production of 15,700,034 vehicles, surpassing Ford's Model T, making it the "World Champion", or "Weltmeister".

This is essentially a one-owner vehicle. It was purchased for me by my father in 1972 to send me off to college. There is some obvious rust damage from the salt on Minnesota roads in the 80's, but it has held together relatively well.

Engine is not original to this car; it was replaced by a VW shop some time in the 1990's.

A restoration project was begun in 2000, but after dis-assembly of the car the project ended. Car must be sold now, as I am losing my garage space.

A special feature of this car was the dealer-installed A.C., very rare for this Limited Edition. The photos show that the A.C. panel is in great shape.

Please note that nearly ALL parts are preserved from the original vehicle. The photos show a random sample of parts that were removed during the start of restoration. A few sheared bolts were discarded.

These items are known to be missing: Battery, spare wheel, wheel caps, wheel nut covers, manual. The windshield is cracked, but intact. All other glass is original and unbroken.

Volkswagen formally introduces super-efficient XL1

Mon, 04 Mar 2013

Lightweight and low drag are hallmarks of great sportscar design. But when paired with a super-efficient, hybrid powertrain, you have the Volkswagen's XL1 that has been formally introduced in Geneva today.
When the 1,700-lb, carbon-fiber-bodied two-seater hits the road, its claimed 261 miles per gallon will make it the world's most-fuel-efficient production car. Though "production car" might be a stretch since VW said in a February press release that the XL1 would be built using "handcrafting-like production methods." We translate that to mean you won't be seeing many of these cars on the road. Though no one at VW has mentioned pricing yet, early rumors suggested a six-figure price tag.
That's supercar budget for a vehicle that has a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder diesel engine and a 27hp electric motor. With numbers like that, owners can expect 0-62 mph times of 12.7 seconds and top speed near 100 mph.

Suspended VW exec Hackenberg resigns in wake of scandal

Fri, Dec 4 2015

Ulrich Hackenberg, father of the innovative modular architecture that underpins many modern Volkswagen and Audi products and a 30 year veteran of the giant company, has resigned his position as the lead engineer for the entire Volkswagen Group as well as his seat on Audi's management board, reports Automotive News. The resignation closes out a two-month suspension while the investigation into VW's deceptive emissions practices continues. The resignation follows the admission by Audi that the 3.0-liter TDI V6 engine was also fitted with emissions-control defeating software, like some of its four-cylinder TDI counterparts. In turn, this lead to changes in Audi's management structure. AN reports that Matthias Muller, who has already taken over Martin Winterkorn's position as VW Group CEO, will also be named chairman of the Audi brand.Hackenberg's successor was named as part of this announcement. Stephan Knirsch, who has lead engine development at the Audi division, will assume Hackenberg's roles as both board member for Audi in charge of technical development, and as the head for technical development across the whole group.Related Video:

Tanner Foust checks out his new VW Beetle GRC rally car

Thu, 11 Sep 2014

Racing driver and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is a very busy guy. After all, he's competing in rounds of both Global Rallycross series and FIA World Rallycross Championship, not to mention his TV duties. However, we probably shouldn't feel too sorry for him, because his job puts him behind the wheel of some truly crazy machinery.
Case in point is his latest ride in Global Rallycross - the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The German company claims that this all-wheel drive Bug makes around 540 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and can shoot to 60 in under 2 seconds. Plus, if this video is any indication, this Volkswagen sounds like a machine gun when throwing revs at idle, and it can do some wonderfully easy four-wheel drifts.
Previously, Foust was driving a VW Polo for Andretti Autosport in GRC, but the team unveiled the look of the Beetle GRC at the Chicago Auto Show. Now, Foust is finally getting to show off his new office to the public, and like VW's tagline for the new car claims, it's way hotter than Herbie.
