This '64 Bug is ready to drive cross-country if you like. Mechanically, the only thing it needs is the master cylinder to be adjusted or replaced. It has a dual-circuit master cylinder and reservoir. Anything other changes would be your own modifications. Here's what I've done to it over the last year:
- new shocks front and back, including Empi for a lowered front end
- new front tires 175/60/15; rear have less than 10k miles. Empi 5-star rims.
- new heavy duty front sway bar w/urethane bushings for link-pin lowered front end
- new stock german muffler, non-stock but deeper sounding pea-shooters
- new rear brakes, complete; does need a new master cylinder
- new shock tower body-to-frame pads, same in front where the body sits on the crossbeam
- 9 new pan-to-body bolts w/plates (PO was missing 1/2 of the 18)
- complete re-furbished GERMAN engine tin, including working t-stat and bracket, new air cooling flaps made by Awesome Powdercoat in OH.
- new Euromax carb (I know, not a german rebuild)
- Pertronix Flame Thrower SVDA w/electronic ignition
- Master Series Silver rust proofed the floor pans
- New Wolfsburgh west tar boards for the pans and padding for the interior luggage compartment/firewall
- properly set all of the interior carpeting; correct radio shut off plate
- New: wiper switch, light switch, 12-v lighter socket, left parking light socket.
- ALL Electrical works: parking lights, interior light, license plate light, horn, no shorts.
- upgraded the wiper motor armature for a 12-volt system, so the single speed wipers WORK, and fast. Also installed the correct wiper fluid bottle for the year, but the top leaks air
- New battery (1 year old now), new alternator/chrome alternator pulley, new v-belt, spare in the trunk; new accelerator, clutch, and heater cables (spare of the 1st 2 go w/the car)
- new heat exchangers, both sides, and working heat, though slow to start.
- Scat pro-car 90 front bucket seats; the original front seats go with the sale too
- new 3-point front seat belts from Wolfsburg West.
- Original VW rear seat bottom kick panels, but from a later year Bug.
- the original back seat top is installed, but the bottom in the car is from a later year so it's too high to bolt the backrest to the sides of the car; I have the correct year bottom seat spring frame, but haven't upholstered it. All original seats go w/the car when I sell it.
- also installed original factory German window regulators for the year
- shift lock and keys;
- bamboo tray included; I haven't mounted it
- no radio, but included in the sale is a new, unopened replacement antena from Wolfsburg West.
- The engine decklid I think is from a '65. There is some rust on the nose tip of the front hood.
- the bad: the master cylinder mentioned at the begining and small tears in the headliner under the rear side windows. NEW WOLFSBURG WEST headliner included in the sale!! I just didn't have time to install it.
The odometer reads just over 40,400 miles but that is not accurate.
I accept PayPal, wire transfers or cash. $1,000 deposit from the winning bidder w/in 24 hours of winning the bid, otherwise I reserve the right to re-post or go to the next highest bidder. Don't ask me what the reserve is, I won't discuss it. Also - this is a 49 year old car. No warranty is implied or offered, it is sold as-is, and no refunds. Email me w/any questions!
Thanks and good luck!

MindDrive cruises California with 1972 Karmann Ghia EV
Thu, Jun 26 2014If you need a bit of inspirational EV goodness, spend some time watching the collection of videos we've got for you from Minddrive. Minddrive, as you might remember, is the education mentorship program that "uses real-world issues of our times to teach urban students critical thinking, creativity, entrepreneurship and how to improve their future by expanding their vision for themselves." The focus was on a fully restored 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Well, restored and converted to electric power. The students previously worked on the Lola EV but this year the focus was on a fully restored 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Well, restored and then converted to electric power. In early June, almost 50 Minddrive students and mentors flew from Kansas City to California to visit the epicenter of electric vehicles in the US on something called the "Raise Your Hand Tour." Filmmakers Mark Honer and Kelly Creech from DHTV Digital were along for the ride. The videos below show the students flying from to Oakland, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, presenting the Karmann Ghia at the California Academy of Sciences and then visiting the Monterey Bay EV Club, Google, Twitter and Telsa. All of this EV engagement apparently worked. One of the students, identified only as Xavier, wrote a poem and essay about what the electric vehicle project meant to him. Here's a tease: "Minddrive has honestly opened my eyes to sights and things I would have never thought possible. I have finally found the right path to follow." Read the whole thing below, after the videos. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. This content is hosted by a third party. I used to think that I would never be able to achieve to a greater rank. Always thought that power was given to people with a big bank. Never could imagine that my life would be amazing. Felt that my whole existence was around the weed blazing.
VW delivers first XL1 in Germany
Mon, Jun 9 2014Volkswagen has delivered the first XL1 diesel plug-in hybrid to a customer from Berlin, Germany. Dr. Christian Malorny received his Oryx White XL1 with black and grey interior from Volkswagen Germany's director of sales and marketing for passenger cars, Thomas Zahn, at the company's Transparent Factory in Dresden. The super-efficient XL1, which first debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, is powered by a 0.8-liter, two-cylinder TDI engine and electric motor, with electricity supplied by a 5.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a seven-speed DSG transmission. With a curb weight of 1,753 pounds and a drag coefficient of just 0.189, the XL1 is rated at 261 miles per gallon on the lenient European cycle. It is capable of traveling solely on electric power for up to 31 miles. "The XL1 has inspired me from the beginning and I am very pleased to now be driving my own," said Malorny, (translated). "With its visionary design and high-tech appearance, Volkswagen has dared something new and innovative." The futuristic XL1 seats two passengers, and can carry 4.2 cubic feet of cargo. It features a carbon fiber reinforced plastic body, and a low center of gravity. It is diminutive of stature, as you can see in the photo, measuring 153.1 inches long, 65.6 inches wide, and just 45.4 inches tall. It is being billed as the world's most efficient production car, but it's unlikely Dr. Malorny will be making his money back on fuel savings any time soon; despite the first sale and the vehicles appearing on the German VW site, Volkswagen has not officially announced the price tag for the XL1. In the past, we've heard it will cost approximately $145,000. Only 250 are being produced. Check out our drive review of the Volkswagen XL1 here or read on for more information in the Google-translated press release, below. Editors' Choice: Top Five 2013 Geneva Motor Show Debuts
Fri, 08 Mar 2013We've returned from a very busy week in Switzerland, and in going back over all of our 75 stories from the Geneva Motor Show, our editors have gathered up their personal favorite debuts from the European expo.
The wonderful thing about the Geneva show is just how wide of an array of vehicles are on display - everything from funny little one-off EVs to the most exotic of supercars to, well, truly ridiculous displays of coachbuilding. And because of that, this list of our editors' favorites might not be as predictable as you think.
But we don't want to give anything away just yet. Scroll down to have a look at our team's favorites from Geneva.
