1964 VW Bug, in very good daily driver condition.  Some of its features are:

  • Brand-new Wolfsburg West multi-piece headliner
  • front and rear seat frames are correct for 1964
  • brand-new TMI seat covers front and back
  • brand-new front seat pads
  • 3-point front seat belts
  • 13" GT sport steering wheel; original wheel may go w/the car depending on the selling price
  • brakes stop solid and are less than 2 years old
  • working heat!!
  • converted to 12V and all electric works - horn, wipers, lights, dash lights, parking lights, dome light, cigarette lighter, etc.  Wipers upgraded to 12-volt armature and work correctly.  Year-correct single-speed wipers.
  • both front king-ping carriers rebuilt last week w/new link and king pins
  • just aligned
  • tires have over 90% tread leaft.  205/60/15 Khumos in rear, 185/60/15 in front
  • 2.5" drop spindles in front with heavy duty 3/4" sway bar correct for a lowered front end;
  • Empi oil shocks for a lowered front end
  • rear shocks
  • 5-spoke Empi wheels all around (already had these when I bought it over 2 years ago)
  • Strong motor with less than 10k miles on it, if I am to believe the Previous Owner.  I have pictures of the engine out of the car for rebuild before I purchased it.  Some of the features of the motor that I've upgraded or added over the last 2 years:
    • Replaced crappy SCAT engine tin w/original and correct German tin for a 1600DP motor
    • Complete factory tin in place - doghouse, hoover bit, flaps, heat riser covers, etc.
    • installed correct and working thermostat for optimal cooling
    • New battery and alternator
    • new Dansk heat exchangers, both sides, along w/the heater cable
    • Clutch and accelarator cables
    • rebuilt Bocar 34-pict-3 carburator
    • 009 Distributor w/Pertronix electronic ignition points replacement module
    • brand new coil, plug wires, and plugs, valves adjusted, oil changed, timed
    • muffler is less than 2 years old
Other Upgrades/Improvements/maintenance:
  • new rear shock tower-to-body pads
  • new front axle beam-to body pads
  • brand new steering damper, right inner and outer tie-rod ends
  • brand new fiber wiring cover (Wolfsburg West)
  • floors cleaned and treated with Master Series Silver rust proofing, painted and undercoated
  • correct tar-boards under carpet.
  • Carpet is about 3 years old and in very good condition, same for the window rubber
  • New right-front brake drum (the old one had stripped lug nut threads)
  • cleaned, re-packed and adjusted front wheel bearings, both sides
  • transmission fluid changed and switched to synthetic oil
  • shifts gears smoothly, does not pop-out of any gear
  • anti-theft shift-lock installed
The not-so-good:
  • Rust repair bottom of the front wheel-wells was done by the Previous Owner and not professionally, could stand a re-do by a pro. But there are no open holes and structural integrity is not compromised as far as I can tell.
  • same for the base of the B-pillars on the interior.
  • it is a 50 year-old car w/a 40+ year-old engine.  No warranty is provided or otherwise implied, it is sold AS-IS.
  • paint is good for a driver but is not show quality
Car is also for sale locally and I will end the auction if the right opportunity arises.

VW Group plan puts Porsche in charge of a 'super-premium' division

Tue, Sep 11 2018

An Automobile report looks into what's happening on the organizational and technical sides of the Volkswagen Group, and what those changes could mean for the premium brands. The wide-angle view is that Porsche appears to have been anointed to "coordinate the future activities" at Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini. Audi would cede Lamborghini guardianship to Stuttgart, and Ducati — via a new concern called Ducati Enterprises — would become the shepherd for VW's other Italian investments. Executives target Jan. 1, 2019, to complete the reshuffle. VW wants to save a boodle by tying up four of its five top-tier brands, and putting the one with the highest ROI in charge. Porsche, within its own house, wants to reduce expenditures by $2.3 billion per year over for four years, the savings already earmarked for improving internal processes like R&D and production. Having Porsche share those gains as well as lead development of platforms, components and future-tech strategies for the sister sports car brands could benefit everyone. In the near-term, the brands have their own plans: Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann is said to want a Chiron Superleggera, a roofless and "completely reskinned" Chiron Aperta, and a track-only Chiron SS. The Superleggera could take the Chiron Sport's and Divo's Jenny Craig routines even further. The Aperta seems a natural successor to the Veyron Grand Sport, a natural evolution of the recently introduced Sky View roof, and a reskin might include numerous Divo cues. It's also said Bugatti's considering "an all-electric high-end model" in conjunction with Porsche, Rimac, and Dallara, but name one supercar or hypercar manufacturer that isn't considering a lightning-fast EV. Lamborghini, deep into work on follow-ups for the Huracan and Aventador, might get a bit of a bump with the new plan. The carbon "monofuselage" for the next V12 flagship is said to be too far developed and too complex to scrap. It puts two electric motors on the front axle, batteries in the middle, and a naturally aspirated V12 with around 770 horsepower plus another e-motor with 402 horsepower in back. The Huracan is said to get a version of the same carbon architecture at the moment, but the corporate reorganization might press pause on it. Automobile says options include continuing the Huracan/ Audi R8 twinning, but that depends on Audi saying "Ja" to a third-gen R8 with Lamborghini bones.

Import pickup truck-killing Chicken Tax to be repealed?

Tue, Jun 30 2015

After over 50 years, the so-called Chicken Tax may finally be going the way of the dodo. Two pending trade deals with countries in the Pacific Rim and Europe potentially could open the US auto market up to imported trucks, if the measures pass. Although, it still might be a while before you can own that Volkswagen Amarok or Toyota Hilux, if ever. The 25-percent import tariff that the Chicken Tax imposes on foreign trucks essentially makes the things all but impossible to sell one profitably in the US, which lends a distinct advantage to domestic pickups. Both the Trans-Pacific Partnership with 12 counties and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union would finally end the charge. According to Automotive News though, don't expect new pickups to flood the market, at least not immediately. These deals might roll back the tariff gradually over time, and in the case of Japan, it could be as long as 25 years before fully free trade. Furthermore, Thailand, a major truck builder in Asia, isn't currently part of the deal, and any new models here would still need to meet safety and emissions rules, as well. Automotive News gauged the very early intentions of several automakers with foreign-built trucks, and they weren't necessarily champing at the bit to start imports. Toyota thinks the Hilux sits between the Tundra and Tacoma, and Mazda doesn't think the BT-50 fits its image here. Also, VW doesn't necessarily want to bring the Amarok over from Hannover. There is previous precedent for companies at least considering bringing in pickup trucks after the Chicken Tax's demise, though. The Pacific free trade deal could be done as soon as this fall, while the EU one is likely further out, according to Automotive News. Given enough time, the more accessible ports could allow some new trucks to enter the market.
