Toyota, Lexus recall 460,000 vehicles for stability control issue
Thu, Apr 14 2022Toyota and its luxury subsidiary, Lexus, are recalling 460,000 electrified models produced for the 2020-2022 model years to address an issue that can cause the vehicles' stability control systems not to activate on startup. If you drive a new Toyota or Lexus and it has at least one electric motor in it (or it's the new LX 600), there's a better-than-even chance you'll be hearing from your dealer in the coming months. The good news for owners is that the issue is one of compliance, rather than something which may immediately endanger a vehicle occupant. "A software error can cause the Vehicle Stability Control system (VSC) not to default to ON the next time the car is started under certain circumstances. This can result in a noncompliance with applicable regulations in the U.S," Toyota said in its announcement. "For all involved vehicles, Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software of the Skid Control ECU free of charge to customers." Included in the campaign are the 2020-2022 Toyota Venza, Mirai, RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Prime, Sienna Hybrid, and Highlander Hybrid. On the Lexus side, it hits the LS500h, LX600, NX350h and NX450h+. Notably absent here are the Tundra-based trucks with the new iForce Max hybrid, though Toyota may have addressed the issue in those models before they went on sale. On the other side of the coin, the LX 600 — a purely ICE model for the time being — managed to stumble into the defect pool. Toyota says owners should receive notices before the end of June. Paul Walker's Supra sells for $185k
Tue, May 19 2015The Fast and the Furious certainly didn't create the import car hobby, but the 2001 film played a role in popularizing it among a mass audience. Among the biggest automotive stars to come from the movie was the customized orange Toyota Supra driven by Paul Walker's character, Brian O'Connor. One of the stunt cars that portrayed that now-famous vehicle recently crossed the auction block at Mecum Auctions' sale in Indianapolis and sold for $185,000. This stunt car was showcased throughout the film, including in the final drag race against Dom's Dodge Charger, according to Mecum's listing. However, don't expect to be successful at living a quarter-mile at a time with this Supra, because under the hood there's a 220-horsepower, 3.0-liter inline six and five-speed manual. It certainly looks the part, with a full body kit, big wing at the back, wild graphics, and orange paint. Two Holley Performance nitrous oxide bottles are in the rear, but they aren't hooked up. For safety, there's a roll cage inside. The auction was estimated to fall between $150,000 and $200,000, which was right on the money. Following Walker's tragic death in 2013, cars related to him and the Fast and Furious franchise seem to be showing up for sale more often. His Nissan Skyline GT-R from Fast & Furious jumped in price afterward, and Barrett-Jackson auctioned his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution from 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2014. Toyota found not at fault in alleged unintended acceleration crash
Fri, 11 Oct 2013Toyota has already paid out millions and billions of dollars in settlements surrounding unintended acceleration, but the first lawsuit in the matter, which headed to a California court in July, has reached a verdict. Following the 2009 death of Noriko Uno, whose 2006 Camry was hit by another car and then sped out of control before crashing into a tree, the jury found that Toyota was not at fault in the crash.
Even though the 2006 Camry (shown above) wasn't involved in any of the unintended acceleration-related recalls and it was not equipped with a brake override, Automotive News reports that the jury's verdict says there was no defect in the car and actually blames the entire incident on the driver that ran into Uno's car - to the tune of $10 million. The accident started when the other driver ran a stop sign and hit Uno's car, and the report says that medical conditions (including diabetes) caused Uno to fail to stop her Camry.
The AN article also states that this lawsuit was a bellwether case for around 85 other personal-injury and wrongful-death suits against Toyota, but there are still many impending suits across the country. Scroll down for an official statement on this particular case from Toyota.
