| Model Overview | |
| The new Venza was designed, styled, and engineered in the U.S., built in Kentucky, and aimed specifically at the U.S. market. Like the Ford Edge and other newer crossover utility vehicles, the Venza has an arched roofline, flared fenders and a sleeker, sportier appearance than traditional SUVs. Overall, it has about the same parking footprint as the mid-size Camry sedan. In some respects, the Venza feels designed from the inside out. The Venza has a little more ground clearance than most sedans, but it also has a taller roofline, which makes getting in and out a cinch. The interior, with twin bucket seats in front and a 60/40-split bench seat in back, seats five comfortably with plenty of cargo space in back--expandable if you fold the back seat forward. Also inside there's a gently curved design theme to the instrument panel, and Toyota's so-called 60/60 cockpit design doesn't isolate the driver. Subtle patterned-and-grained plastics and trim surfaces make the interior appealing, and the seats are upholstered in corduroy or textured leather with contrasting piping. Powering the new Venza is a new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, making a respectable 182 horsepower, while a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine is available. With the V-6 the Venza can accelerate to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds, while the four-cylinder rewards with strong fuel economy of up to 29 mpg highway. Both engines are offered in a single trim, with a choice of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive version has Toyota's Active Torque Control system, which sends more torque to the rear wheels when needed for better traction. The Venza has a MacPherson strut front suspension and dual-link rear suspension. An electronic power steering system helps improve steering feel while also aiding fuel economy, and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are standard across the line. The Venza can tow up to 3500 pounds. Driving the Venza is much like driving a sedan, but with a higher seating position. Although the rearward view can be obscured due to the roofline, the view outward in front is good, with a nice, upright driving perch. As the Venza comes in a single trim level, quite a few safety features that are typically optional are standard. Examples include dual-zone climate control, fog lamps, keyless entry, a universal garage-door opener and cruise control. Front side and full-length side-curtain airbags are standard, as are electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes. The options list is extensive, with most items grouped into rather expensive packages. Top options grouped in packages include leather upholstery, a Smart Key system and a backup camera system. |

Watch Congress sample Toyota's i-Road 3-wheeler concept
Fri, 11 Apr 2014Toyota brought its new i-Road, a three-wheeled, all-electric low-speed vehicle that debuted in 2013 at the Geneva Motor Show, to the Capitol for some of our elected officials to test out. As easy as it is to forget that politicians are people, too, it was refreshing to see a human side to many of them as they zipped about one of the Capitol's many meeting rooms.
We'd say their reactions were surprisingly positive. Of course, some were just down there because Toyota is a big presence in their respective districts, but the bulk of the senators and representatives seemed like they just wanted to zip about the makeshift indoor course on the leaning trike.
Take a look below at the video from Bloomberg.
Economy-car buyers increasingly get the best deal on technology
Mon, Apr 16 2018One of the great things about technology is – with the exception of Apple products – consumers get more for their money every year. For example, the first 1GB USB drive I bought in 2005 cost me $30. Today you can get 10 for that price, delivered to your door thanks to Amazon. The same goes for car tech. Features such as navigation and Bluetooth started out on high-end vehicles before trickling down to entry-level cars. Same with driver assist features ranging from rearview cameras to forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking — so now it's not only rich people who are protected in car crashes. I've found that this democratization of tech has reached a point where amenities on low-cost cars can be as good — and sometimes even better — than those on vehicles costing tens of thousands of dollars more. While attending a media event for the launch of the all-new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, I was impressed by the car's cool styling and go-kart performance. Equally noteworthy is the amount of standard tech on the low-cost hot hatch. (Pricing will be announced later this month, but expect it to come in a bit higher that the current Corolla iM's roughly $19,000 base.) Even the base SE CVT trim of the 2019 Corolla Hatchback comes with an 8-inch touchscreen and Toyota's Entune 3.0 infotainment system. Among other features, Entune 3.0 provides Wi-Fi capability, Amazon Alexa connectivity, the Entune App Suite for integration of smartphone apps such as Pandora and Yelp and, for the first time in a Toyota, Apple CarPlay (but no Android Auto). The 2019 Corolla Hatchback is also the first North American vehicle to get the second-generation Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of driver assists that's also standard on the base model. TSS 2.0 includes Toyota's Pre-Collision System (forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking) with new daytime and low-light pedestrian detection and daytime cyclist detection features, lane keeping and lane departure alert with steering assist, auto high beams, adaptive cruise control, and road sign detection. While the 2019 Corolla Hatchback sets a new benchmark in standard tech on a budget-mobile, competing cars aren't far behind. The 2018 Honda Fit LX, for example, includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and assist and adaptive cruise, while the automaker's Lane Departure Mitigation and Lane Watch camera system is added the two top trims.
2014 Toyota Tundra appears with revised styling, same mechanicals
Thu, 07 Feb 2013Toyota has pulled the curtain back on its 2014 Tundra, showing a truck that has gotten its most significant refresh since its launch as a 2007 model. For better or worse, however, the changes that Toyota has made to the fullsize pickup are mostly cosmetic, with the underpinnings of the vehicle staying unchanged.
The most obvious revision for 2014 is to the bluff front fascia of the truck. There's a new, taller squared-off grille decorating the Tundra's nose, along with a revised, three-part front bumper design. The optional black grille-frame strikes us as an acquired taste, to say the least, but other models, like the Limited above, is all clad in chrome. Fenders and wheel wells are more square than in the out-going truck, too. Perhaps most significant is the revised bed design, which Toyota calls "all-new," with new sheet metal on the sides, a revised tailgate and a very subtle integrated spoiler.
Inside, Toyota has given buyers some new seats and a new-look instrument panel. A backup camera (always handy on big trucks) is now standard equipment on all grades, as is Bluetooth connectivity. Blind spot monitoring is a new, optional feature as well. In all, as with the exterior mods, the changes in-cabin are far more evolutionary than revolutionary.
