Which of these five plug-ins should win the 2017 Green Car of the Year?
Tue, Nov 8 2016It's going to be a competitive race for the 2017 Green Car Of The Year. With a minivan in the running for the first time in ages, the five finalists announced by Green Car Journal today include five very different plug-in vehicles. As Ron Cogan, the editor and publisher of Green Car Journal, said in a statement, "electrification is now considered by most automakers an essential technology for current and future high-efficiency models." Let's check out the list: Toyota Prius Prime, the updated plug-in version of the world's best-selling hybrid. Chevy Bolt, GM's all-new entry into the long-range EV game. Chrysler Pacifica, a family hauler with the ability to go 30 miles on electric power. Kia Optima. The nomination is for the full line-up, but really the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models are the green stars here. BMW 330e iPerformance, one of the automaker's many new plug-in hybrids that bring battery power to models outside the i sub-brand. Green Car Journal will announce the winners at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 17th, along with some, "other green transportation announcements," whatever that means. Toyota's Mirai fuel cell car gets its own special showroom
Wed, Apr 15 2015If the car's unique, the showroom better be as well. That's the approach Toyota is taking with the Mirai, its first production hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle. In fact, the model is getting its own special showroom starting this Friday. The Japanese automaker is opening the showroom in Tokyo. The facility takes up two floors totaling about 1,800 square feet and, from the pictures, it looks to have a very Zen-like quality. Toyota will be displaying one Mirai vehicle and will have another vehicle available for public test drives available every Friday. Toyota started selling the Mirai in Japan late last year and has announced plans to debut the car in the US – starting in California – this fall at a base price of $57,500, or a lease option of $499 a month for 36 months ($3,649 is due at signing). Earlier this year, Toyota said it was going to bump production to 2,000 vehicles next year (and 3,000 in 2017) from 700 units this year. With such a ramp-up in store, Toyota will spend about $170 million increasing production capacity of the fuel-cell vehicle. That total probably doesn't take into account the stylish new Tokyo showroom. Located within a hydrogen station operated by Iwatani Corporation in Tokyo's Minato Ward, the space will serve as a hub for sharing information on fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen, with the aim of promoting a hydrogen-based society. In addition to having one Mirai on display and another for test drives, the showroom will use videos and other media to raise awareness about the features of the vehicle, the benefits of hydrogen and more. Toyota and Lexus show off advanced safety research vehicle [w/video]
Tue, 08 Jan 2013While Google and Audi explore the possibilities of autonomous vehicles, Toyota and its Lexus division are studying the intermediate step of vehicles equipped with a deep suite of technology that help drivers make the best decisions. Introduced at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Lexus advanced safety research vehicle is an LS sedan fitted with three high-def color cameras to detect objects up to almost 500 feet away, 360-degree Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) lasers that can detect objects up to 220 feet away, three radar units to keep track of other vehicles at intersections, a precision odometer on the rear wheel, GPS that estimates orientation and an accelerometer.
Currently testing at a purpose-built 8.6 acre urban testing ground at the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Susono, Japan the Toyota research vehicle is being used to study how to make better drivers, as well as figuring out how to reduce crashes as the industry's journey through passive and active safety systems progresses. In the event of a crash, new rescue systems are also being tested.
Further investment is being put into the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that would use shortwave signals to harness information from the car and from other vehicles on the road, as well as roadside infrastructure and even pedestrians. Toyota reasons it could then build a picture of interactions and, for instance, alert the driver to a potential collision at a blind intersection.
