Two different engines are available on the 2012 Toyota Tacoma lineup: a 159-horsepower, 2.7L 4-cylinder and a 236-hp, 4.0L V6. Both engines utilize variable valve timing to help provide both strong low-end torque as well as higher-rev passing power. A 6-speed manual transmission is available with the V6 as is a 5-speed automatic. 4-cylinder Tacomas are equipped with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.Just as with most other pickup models, the Tacoma is available in several different configurations so as to suit a wide range of uses. Regular Cab models come with two doors, with the Access Cab including a small backseat as well as rear doors that open 80 degrees for easy access; 4-door Double Cab models include 60/40-split rear seats that are comfortable enough for adults. Access Cab models also have fold-up rear seats, but add under-seat storage. All Tacoma models come with electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, brake assist and an automatic limited-slip differential. With the available Off-Road Package, there's also Hill-start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control, which help keep traction on steep slippery slopes or moderate speed and traction on steep downhills. Seat-mounted side airbags, roll-sensing side airbags and active front headrests are also included. The Toyota Tacoma X-Runner model features the highest-performance of the lineup and carries over with a number of serious performance modifications as well as appearance upgrades. The suspension is specially tuned for road performance, while there's a full body kit, hood scoop and special fog lamps. With the V6, it's claimed to accelerate to 60 mph in less than seven seconds, but there's even more performance potential on tap with an available supercharger kit, bringing output up to 304 hp and 334 lb-feet of torque.Base Tacoma models are quite simply equipped and don't even include power windows or locks. They do come with air conditioning and a 4-speaker CD sound system. Access Cab and Double Cab models get a nicer 6-speaker system, while including power windows and locks. Double Cab models also get a lumbar-adjustable driver's seat. Options on Access and Double Cab models include an upgraded 7-speaker stereo with iTunes connectivity, steering-wheel controls, a backup monitor system and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink universal transceiver. A Tow Package available on Access Cab V6 models brings tow capacity up to 6,500 pounds. Also available as a dealer-installed option is a TRD Big Brake system, which includes bigger vented rotors, aluminum 4-piston calipers and braided steel lines. The TX and TX Pro packages give the Tacoma PreRunner and 4x4 models a more aggressive, more off-road-capable look with special accessories and performance enhancements. The TX package brings the menacing look, with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires on 16-inch black alloy bead-lock wheels, special tube-side steps, a stainless steel exhaust tip and exterior graphics, while the TX Pro gets a special cat-back performance exhaust system. Both include what's otherwise offered as the TRD Off-Road Package, with progressive-rate front springs, an electric-locking front differential, Bilstein shocks, a larger stabilizer bar and fog lamps, plus a 400-watt, 115-volt powerpoint, sport seats and an overhead console.

Toyota Hilux successor spotted

Mon, 15 Sep 2014

The midsize truck segment is suddenly seemingly exploding with new vehicles worldwide, even here in North America. Not only will the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon be available very soon, Toyota is already testing a replacement for its aging Tacoma and Honda has promised a Ridgeline replacement within the next 18 months. Also, the recently shown Nissan Navara is said to portend the future of our Frontier. Here's some more fresh evidence from Europe of this pickup boom with the next generation of its venerable Hilux in testing.
Thanks to Top Gear and sometimes the evening news, the Hilux has built a reputation of being able to go just about anywhere. According to out spy shooter, this particular pickup was spotted during hot weather testing in southern Europe. Interestingly, a Volkswagen Amarok was along for the ride as a benchmark. Because the VW tends to offer a bit more comfort than the generally utilitarian Hilux, this could indicate Toyota is considering taking the new truck in a slightly comfier, more refined direction.
Compared to the current model, this camouflaged tester sports a narrower front grille and headlights. The hood scoop is also absent here. The lower air dam also receives a more horizontal look, but the more vertical fog light housings provide some contrast. The crazy camouflage pattern makes things hard to discern at the rear, but the taillights appear to be more slender than they on the current model. Unfortunately, mechanical details about the new truck remain a mystery at the moment, but enjoy these spy shots as a preview of one more upcoming pickup.

2014 Toyota 4Runner Limited

Thu, 08 May 2014

What would you say if we told you that outside of Jeep and Land Rover, the best brand for those who want to go off road is Toyota? Sounds remarkable, eh? But the truth is, Toyota's history of providing vehicles for the rougher bits of our blue marble dates back to 1950, barely a decade after Willys built the first Jeeps and only a few years after Land Rover made its big debut with the iconic Series I.
In fact, Toyota's start in off-roaders was with a small contract for providing the US Army with vehicles, during the Korean War. From that, the BJ was spawned. This Jeep-like vehicle evolved into the 20 Series and then into the iconic 40 Series Land Cruiser in the 1960s.
So yes, Toyota knows its way around the trails. While the Land Cruiser, deservedly, gets all the attention thanks to its impressive longevity, we're partial to the 4Runner, which is a far more affordable entry that serves as Toyota's challenger to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

180,000 new vehicles are sitting, derailed by lack of transport trains

Wed, 21 May 2014

If you're planning on buying a new car in the next month or so, you might want to pick from what's on the lot, because there could be a long wait for new vehicles from the factory. Locomotives continue to be in short supply in North America, and that's causing major delays for automakers trying to move assembled cars.
According to The Detroit News, there are about 180,000 new vehicles waiting to be transported by rail in North America at the moment. In a normal year, it would be about 69,000. The complications have been industry-wide. Toyota, General Motors, Honda and Ford all reported experiencing some delays, and Chrysler recently had hundreds of minivans sitting on the Detroit waterfront waiting to be shipped out.
The problem is twofold for automakers. First, the fracking boom in the Bakken oil field in the Plains and Canada is monopolizing many locomotives. Second, the long, harsh winter is still causing major delays in freight train travel. The bad weather forced trains to slow down and carry less weight, which caused a backup of goods to transport. The auto companies resorted to moving some vehicles by truck, which was a less efficient but necessary option.
