 1984 TOYOTA CELICA SUPRA

MOTOR TREND CAR OF THE YEAR!!

I purchased this car in 2008.  When it is not being driven, it spends 100% of its time indoors and covered. It is the very definition of a garage queen!

I am the second owner of this classic automobile.  The first owner, a gentleman reaching retirement age, actually interviewed potential buyers to be sure his baby was going to a good home. I have kept in touch with him all these years, and he is always telling me he made the right choice when he sold it to me.

Highlights from 2007 before I owned the car:

  • Engine overhauled with new piston rings, crankshaft, all new bearings, and the valves were reseated.
  • New oil pump, clutch, timing belt, new universal joints for the drive shaft.
  • Tires rated for 60,000 miles (still have less than 10,000 miles of usage!)
  • The interior is all original cloth, and is meticulously clean.
  • Complete repainting
  • The skirt trim is a special coating with a flexible chip-absorbing coat.
  • New radiator

As you can see, when I bought the car it was already in great shape. My contributions seem small by comparison, but here are some of the things I've done:

  • realigned the hood
  • replaced the hood emblem
  • replaced the leather boot and the shift stick
  • reupholstered the center arm rest
  • replaced the seat trim
  • replaced the antenna
  • replaced the fog lights
  • valve covers professionally restored with wrinkle coat
  • replaced whiskers around the headlights
  • dyed sun faded rear head rests

I have had an absolutely wonderful time with this car.  No car will ever be perfect, but this is pretty close for a 30 year old car, and it sure has been fun trying reach perfection.  I've been lucky enough to have spent time with this car, which needed nothing more than a few cosmetic improvements.  I've driven it like a true collector car.  You know... sunny days on weekends kind of stuff.  In fact, I've averaged under 750 miles per year.  But they have been really fun miles!

You'll see the car has earned "HISTORIC" plates from the State of New Jersey.

Known issues:

  • The ONE non-oem concession... an aftermarket oil pressure gage.
  • The speedometer reads about 10% higher than actual speed.
  • The black metal trim around the rear hatch window could use some touch-up
  • Belt molding on side window (the small window behind the door) is chipped.

Ever owned a collector car?  I was very surprised to find out that my insurance was just $125 per year for some pretty decent coverage.  I couldn't say what your rates would be, but if you treat it like a collector car you should go to a collector's insurance company.  Second, I was pleasantly surprised to find a very helpful owner's group for these MK2 Supras.  I have been able to ask questions, search for answers, find hard-to-find parts, and even attend meets to see what others are doing with their Supras.  I highly recommend this community!

Here’s a chance to own a very solid and historic collector car. Please check my feedback, which is at 100%, and bid with confidence. In fact, check my feedback since I joined eBay 17 years ago, and that too is at 100%.

As this car is also available for sale locally, I reserve the right to end this auction early. Please don’t wait until the last minute and then lose out!

Local pickup only. If you want to make arrangements to have a shipper pick up the vehicle, that certainly is okay.  Good, cleared funds paid in full required before the vehicle is released.

Title is in hand, free and clear.  All costs of transfer, taxes, etc., are the buyer's responsibility.

Toyota recalling 20k 2014 and 2015 cars and CUVs with 3.5L engines

Thu, 18 Sep 2014

Toyota has announced a recall of roughly 20,000 vehicles covering the 2014 Avalon, Camry, Highlander (pictured) and Sienna, as well as the 2015 Lexus RX luxury crossover. The affected vehicles are all powered the 2GR-FE engine, which in layman's terms, is Toyota's well-regarded 3.5-liter V6.
According to Toyota's statement, a parts supplier might not have welded "the end cap on the right-hand fuel delivery pipe in the engine compartment" correctly, meaning fuel could leak. Leaking fuel, of course, increases the chance of an engine fire. That said, no fires, crashes or injuries have been reported due to the issue.
Owners will be notified to report to dealers, where techs will check the fuel delivery pipe and fit a replacement part as necessary.

Toyota mulling Cummins diesel for Tundra?

Mon, 02 Sep 2013

When Bloomberg spoke to Toyota USA Sales CEO Kazua Ohara recently, we highlighted his comments on the possible return of the Toyota Supra. However, the interview started with Ohara discussing the Tundra, and how it would take time to pinpoint and hone the pickup truck's brand image in the minds of consumers. That effort could get a boost, with a report in Edmunds saying that Toyota is "evaluating" the addition of a Cummins turbodiesel to the Tundra's engine options.
The Cummins powerplant is one of two options for the moment, the other being a hybrid powertrain. If the oil-burner got the thumbs-up, Toyota would follow the recent example of Nissan, which announced it would put a Cummins turbodiesel into its 2015 Titan. While the two Japanese companies make a closer comparison since they're both talking about Cummins applications in light-duty trucks, if it happens, it could be seen as further diluting the once-exclusive tie-up that Ram trucks has had with Cummins even though Ram has used Cummins in its heavy-duty truck.
Toyota hasn't said when it will decide on which direction to take, but either will be a move for the better in the view of segment watchers; PickupTrucks.com said the first of its top-five fixes for the Tundra would be a better engine, perhaps a diesel-electric hybrid from Toyota's Hino unit. Cummins told Edmunds it can supply a second manufacturer with the 5.0-liter diesel that Nissan will be using, so we wouldn't be surprised to see it end up in a Toyota or somewhere else.

Sports 800 is a progenitor of Toyota performance

Tue, 18 Nov 2014

There's an automotive axiom that claims it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow. If that's the case, then pushing a Toyota Sports 800 around must be one of the most exhilarating experiences behind the wheel in the world. With just 800cc of displacement from a two-cylinder boxer engine, the focus is on finesse over outright speed. Still, it's a fantastic page in Toyota's performance history, and Petrolicious takes a ride with a man who owns a meticulously restored 1967 example in its latest video.
The Sports 800 used the classic cost-saving strategy in the auto industry of taking parts from a standard model in the lineup and modifying it into a sports car. In this case that meant borrowing the engine from the plebian Toyota Publica, beefing it up for more power and clothing the whole thing a in beautifully shaped, wind-tunnel-honed body.
The look of these lithe, targa roadsters is the exact opposite of the rather dull styling sometimes associated with Toyota today. Everywhere you look there are louvers, vents or curves to draw the eye. Check out the latest Petrolicious video for a detailed look at the history of this rare model that's largely unknown on this side of the Pacific.
