Good:
New tires (205/50r15 Front, 225/50r15 Rear) less than 1000 miles on them (with reciepts) Recent engine rebuild (less than 15k) with reciepts; includes head resurfacing, and new pistons. Completed in 2008 New exhaust manifold, turn signals (with reciepts) Bilstein B6 coilovers w/ ~2" drop -- unsure of springs, done by previous owner. Apexi AVC-R Electronic boost controller set at 14.5 PSI. ECU boost cut set at 15 PSI (flashed, not spliced) New Morimoto Mini D2S Retrofit HID kit (bought online) with standard 4300k bulbs Good B-pipe and Fujitsubo exhaust (no reciepts, bought secondhand) New spark plugs, oil, filter. Interior is mostly nice. New radio with aux port New TRD short shift kit T-Tops good, with shades. Doesn't leak Clean Virginia title and plates. Cash in hand = you get car, can sign title away right then. Transmission in top condition, never misses, no synchro problems, no clutch problems. Previous owner had a stage 4 unsprung clutch installed with the transmission. EVERYTHING ELECTRIC. ABS, Cruise control, windows, locks, power steering, this thing was loaded with options from the factory. Bad: No A/C compressor, previous owner did A/C delete and removed idler valve Most of the reason of me letting it go is because it's too much time to work on. The car runs and can still be daily driven. It has some kind of exhaust knock. You fix, I don't want to deal with it anymore. It cranks and starts every time, but it's definitely got a knock. Paint probably needs to be redone on certain parts. Main body parts seem fine, but bumpers, engine lid have chips and need some TLC. There is a small surface rust spot on the right front fender, but it is surface and not body. Looks like previous owner hit a rock and took off some paint. Body is 100% AOK and no rust on the body. It's got a brand new repained valve cover, giving the engine a bit of new life. Interior: What looks like cigarette butt burn into drivers seat cushion? Not noticeable when seated, it's under you. Steering wheel is rough but not discolored HVAC controls are worn (common problem) Speakers are probably blown. |

Toyota reveals cause of heartbreaking failure at Le Mans
Thu, Jun 23 2016Toyota was set to become only the second Japanese automaker to win the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. But on the last lap, the No. 5 TS 050 car, which was being driven by Kazuki Nakajima, suffered a technical issue that resulted in a sudden loss of power. In a team statement, Toyota Gazoo Racing has revealed that the culprit was a "defect on a connector on the air line between the turbocharger and the intercooler." The defective air line connector, according to the statement, resulted in a loss of control over the turbocharger. The team isn't sure why the connector failed and is continuing to analyze the component to get down to the root cause, the team said in the statement. During the race, the team was able to get the No. 5 car running again by modifying the control settings. The fix, however, came a little too late as the vehicle could not complete the lap under Le Mans' maximum final lap time of six minutes and limped its way to 45th place. While the team is working hard to find the fix – to avoid a similar type of failure in the future – it claims there is no relation to the engine issues that were experienced by the two TS 050 cars at Spa during the World Endurance Championship in May. Green self-driving cars take center stage in Tokyo
Sat, Oct 31 2015Visions of cars that drive themselves without emitting a bit of pollution while entertaining passengers with online movies and social media are what's taking center stage at the Tokyo Motor Show. Japan, home to the world's top-selling automaker, has a younger generation disinterested in owning or driving cars. The show is about wooing them back. It's also about pushing an ambitious government-backed plan that paints Japan as a leader in automated driving technology. Reporters got a preview look at the exhibition Wednesday, ahead of its opening to the public Oct. 30. Nissan Motor Co. showed a concept vehicle loaded with laser scanners, a 360 degree camera setup, a radar and computer chips so the car can "think" to deliver autonomous driving. The Japanese automaker called it IDS, which stands for "intelligent driving system." Nissan, based in Yokohama, Japan, said it will offer some autonomous driving features by the end of next year in Japan. By 2018, it said vehicles with the technology will be able to conduct lane changes on highways. By 2020, such vehicles will be able to make their way through intersections on regular urban roads. Nissan officials said they were working hard to make the car smart enough to recognize the difference between a red traffic light and a tail light, learn how to turn on intersections where white lane indicators might be missing and anticipate from body language when a pedestrian might cross a street. Nissan's IDS vehicle is also electric, with a new battery that's more powerful than the one currently in the automaker's Leaf electric vehicle. Although production and sales plans were still undecided, it can travel a longer distance on a single charge and recharge more quickly. A major challenge for cars that drive themselves is winning social acceptance. They would have to share the roads with normal cars with drivers as well as with pedestrians, animals and unexpected objects. That's why some automakers at the show are packing the technology into what looks more like a golf cart or scooter than a car, such as Honda Motor Co.'s cubicle-like Wander Stand and Wander Walker scooter. Instead of trying to venture on freeways and other public roads, these are designed for controlled environments, restricted to shuttling people to pre-determined destinations. At a special section of the show, visitors can try out some of the so-called "smart mobility" devices such as Honda's seat on a single-wheel as well as small electric vehicles.
New autonomous testing ground in Michigan will help battle bad weather
Thu, Dec 14 2017If one of the big weaknesses of autonomous vehicles is their ability to navigate in the snow, consider this a trial by fire. The American Center for Mobility says it has opened its $110 million driverless car testing facility on the site of a former General Motors assembly plant in Michigan, with Toyota and auto supplier Visteon the first to begin testing this week. The ACM proving ground is a 500-acre site at historic Willow Run in Ypsilanti Township, near Ann Arbor. It's one of 10 sites designated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as pilot proving ground sites to test AV technologies. It features a variety of simulated environments to test driverless cars, including a 2.5-mile highway loop, two double overpasses, intersections, roundabouts and a 700-foot curved tunnel. It also opens just as the region experiences a series of snowstorms and the first frigid temperatures of the season. That ability to test autonomous vehicles in a wide variety of weather conditions is important, as autonomous vehicle sensors have struggled to handle cold, wet and snowy conditions. Google parent Alphabet in October said its Waymo division was expanding its winter testing operations to Michigan, making it the sixth state where it's testing its driverless car systems. In a Medium blog post, Waymo CEO John Krafcik wrote that "This type of testing will give us the opportunity to assess the way our sensors perform in wet, cold conditions. And it will also build on the advanced driving skills we've developed over the last eight years by teaching our cars how to handle things like skidding on icy, unplowed roads." Waymo also opened a development center in suburban Detroit in 2016, working with Fiat Chrysler to integrate its autonomous technology into Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans. Visteon began testing and validating its DriveCore autonomous driving platform to evaluate algorithms, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure technology and other systems. Toyota used the facility Wednesday to begin orientation and driver training. ACM has so far secured $110 million to construct the first two phases from founders Ford, Hyundai America Technical Center, Toyota and Visteon, and says it expects to announce more investment soon.
