1982 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER FJ40 HARDTOP
Timeless Toyota Quality and Original
California Vehicle Simple, Classic, and Tough I purchased
this vehicle from its previous owner in March of 2010. The vehicle was sold new in 1982 at a local
dealership in Anaheim, California and retains its original blue CA license
plates. Over the
last four years of ownership, I have invested countless hours and thousands of
dollars on the cruiser to bring it to its current condition. The cruiser was kept in dry storage for many
years and was covered with dust after sitting in a large wood working shop. The cruiser
wears its original paint color also known as Toyota Beige (464). The exterior of the truck looks great from 5
feet away. At some point in its life,
the driver’s side appears to have had some paint and body work which must have
been completed several years ago as the vehicle maintains its retro orange pin
striping throughout. There are various
areas on the driver’s side where the paint is beginning to chip. I removed the fiberglass cap, front bezel
and had the five original steel wheels sandblasted, power coated and
professionally painted using PPG paint in Toyota White (033). Next, I had the headliner installed by a
local upholstery shop using a factory reproduction headliner sold by Specter
Off Road. While the top was off, I proceeded
to install new OEM weather stripping for both the fiberglass cap and hard
top. A reproduction front bumper was
painted using Cruiser Corps OEM Pewter paint and two new OEM Toyota bumperettes
were fitted in the rear. The interior
of the cruiser is in great shape. The
front and rear factory floor mats are in good shape as are the front and rear
jump seats. The driver’s seat bottom
appears to have been re-covered with matching grey vinyl. All seat belts are present and
functional. All switches, knobs and
controls appear to be working as they should.
The dash and sun visors are in good condition. The front door panels have been altered to
fit aftermarket speakers which are not connected at this time. In addition, an aftermarket Audiovox AM/FM
cassette player was installed in the factory location. The center console is original and has a
small crack on the ashtray. The vehicle has no A/C or Power Steering. The front floorboards are rust free and the
rear cargo area has only surface rust typical of the felt underlayment material
used under the rear factory rubber floor mat.
There are two small spots of corrosion below the ‘Toyota’ emblem on the
passenger rear quarter panel (see photos).
The underbody and frame are in good condition and free of major rust or
corrosion for a vehicle of this age. Mechanically,
the vehicle has plenty of power and runs strong. The 4-Speed transmission shifts smoothly and
the 4WD functions as it should. The
odometer reads just over 126k miles (4k average for its 32 years of life). Recently, a valve adjustment, valve cover
gasket, and steering arm were installed by Mark’s Off Road Enterprises in
Burbank, CA. I have had the carb rebuilt several
times. The first rebuild was completed by
Mark’s Off Road and the second rebuild was completed by the same shop used by
Specter Off Road (SOR) in order to pass strict California emissions
standards. This is a California model
and retains all factory smog and emissions hoses and equipment. Next, a new exhaust manifold gasket was
fitted. The cruiser has a new catalytic
converter and newer exhaust and muffler.
The truck appears to have a 2-inch suspension and anti-inversion
shackles which were also installed by the previous owner. The front axle was rebuilt and the front
knuckles have been serviced. Also, a
new transfer/trans gasket, oil pan gasket, and rear engine seal were
replaced. The drive shaft was balanced
and lubricated. A new EverStart Marine
battery was also installed in April of 2012.
California Smog Check certificate included with the sale as I just had
the vehicle smogged on 5/12/14. Current
registration and tags are good through April of 2015. The truck shifts smoothly, accelerates nicely
and has plenty of power. The tires are
30x9.5LT Bridgestone Dueler A/T in good shape; the spare is a mismatched tire
that will need to be replaced. This is not
a museum quality cruiser. If you’re

Toyota Land Cruiser vs Lexus LX 570 Suspension Flex Test
Thu, May 21 2020There’s no need to explain the Toyota Land Cruiser, one of ToyotaÂ’s earliest successful products. The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition celebrates some 60 years of popularity of a vehicle that has survived the segmentÂ’s “mall wagon” phase and the rise of crossovers. Its already-sterling reputation has received an additional recent push from the rise of overlanding — an outdoor pastime that has always existed but only recently got a press agent. By comparison, the Lexus LX is a more recent development. Debuting in 1996, the LX 450 was little more than an 80-series Land Cruiser with cladding, a Lexus badge and a higher price. The amount of styling differentiation and luxury specialization has increased over the years to the point that the newest LX 570 actually seems like a completely different vehicle. In truth, the 2020 Lexus LX 570 and the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser are both 200-series Land Cruisers under the skin. They share the same thirsty 5.7-liter V8 engine and the same frame that features a double-wishbone suspension at the front, a five-link coil spring suspension at the rear and a 112.2-inch wheelbase in the middle. The styling is strikingly different, of course, but so are the hidden details of their suspensions. The Land Cruiser employs a simple set of coil springs and shock absorbers, but with an interconnected pair of automatically disconnecting stabilizer bars called KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System). The Lexus, on the other hand, has fixed stabilizer bars and coil springs, but its “shocks” are really hydraulic cylinders that perform height adjustments and transmit suspension movements via piping to remote electronically-adjustable damper valves mounted along the frame rails. All of the above begs a question: Which of them will go farther up my RTI ramp and, by extension, offer better suspension articulation in an authentic off-road situation? Right away, the very approach to the ramp demonstrates a huge difference and a serious issue for the LX. Its normal cruising height (there is a lower height, but this isnÂ’t that) doesnÂ’t provide enough approach clearance to attempt the ramp. The front spoiler contacts the nasty grating before the tire does. ItÂ’s a close-run thing, but from this point on, clearance gets SMALLER as the left front suspension compresses on the way up. If it's touching now, itÂ’s only going to get worse if I go forward.
European car sales up 8% in February
Sat, 22 Mar 2014Three weeks ago an analyst increased projections for European car sales this year, expecting them to climb three percent compared to last year instead of 2.7 percent. That number is a postive sign after years of hard times but it turns out February was especially good, overall European sales climbing eight percent on a wave of southern European recovery and discounts - and this comes after five months of gains including January's 7.2-percent jump over the year before.
The only country of Europe's five largest markets to post a decline was France, just as it did in January, Germany, the UK and Italy posting solid double-digit numbers, Spain rocking the charts with an 18-percent increase because of a government program to encourage trade-ins.
The only brand to miss the wave was Volkswagen, dropping 0.8 percent as it watched the double-digit growth at sister brands Audi, Seat and Skoda lift the Volkswagen Group sales up by seven-percent. Peugeot overcame flat sales at Citroën to improve the group by 3.5 percent, BMW and the Mercedes-Benz/Smart combo rose by four percent, the Fiat group jumped 5.8 percent, Ford was up 11 percent, the Renault Group 11.5 percent, General Motors 12 percent and the Toyota clan by 14 percent.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86 aftermarket upgrader's guide
Wed, Sep 1 2021When you own an enthusiast car, there are few events more nerve-wracking than the introduction of its successor. Should you upgrade? Is it worthwhile? What will it cost you to part out your mods and trade up? Well, there's good news for owners of the outgoing Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ who are considering an upgrade: You might not have to start with a clean slate. If you’re an owner (or even a casual fan) of the Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 family of sports coupes, youÂ’re probably already aware that the 2022 models are more like aggressive overhauls than true, ground-up redesigns. Neither company really wants to put a spotlight on the fact that their coupes are a little less "all-new" and a little more "back and better than ever," but in our opinion, this is something Subaru and Toyota should embrace. Why? In a word: continuity. Look no further than the NA (1989-1997) and NB (1999-2005) Mazda Miata. While they are regarded as distinct generations (the NA defined by its pop-up headlights and simpler lines; the NB by its fixed lamps and swoopier styling) and were offered with different equipment packages, the fundamental underlying chassis remained relatively unchanged. This meant that, in many cases at least, buyers could trade up to a new model but bring along some of their factory and aftermarket accessories because theyÂ’d still fit. The BRZ and GR 86 are meant to be fairly bare-bones vehicles, the idea being that they appeal to those who want limited frills at a low cost and those who prefer to view cars as canvases rather than finished masterpieces. A long-running platform makes an excellent candidate for the latter type of car buyer. So, what does that mean for the 2022 BRZ and GR 86? Well, let's break it down by whatÂ’s truly new, whatÂ’s kind-of-new, and whatÂ’s essentially carry-over, with some guidance from Subaru and Toyota engineers. 2022 Subaru BRZ blue action profile View 22 Photos Spankin' new LetÂ’s start with the obvious: the styling. Even if you can find older aftermarket appearance kits that will fit the new BRZ and GR 86 on paper, they probably wonÂ’t bolt up nicely to the new cars due to their sleek new exterior designs. Wings and spoilers might still bolt up, but donÂ’t count on it, and theyÂ’ll probably look disjointed at best anyway.
