Up for grabs is this 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40.  This FJ features what we believe to be the original engine, original transmission, and original hard top.  This FJ starts easily and drives very well at speed, it has a four speed manual transmission.  All four tires match (spare is not present) and have well over 50% tread showing.  The interior is very complete, and the dash pad is in very good condition, all of the gauges/lights/electrics work, and there is an FJ40 rubber floor mat for the front passenger cab.  There is also what appears to be the original headliner, this is in very good condition.  Original roll bar is also present and in good condition.  Radio does not appear to be functioning.  The heater does work as do the wipers.  All brake lights, headlights, and turn signals are functioning.

On 12/9, this FJ received a full tune-up by a master mechanic, to include spark plugs AND fuel filter as well as an oil change.  It idles well and evenly, and there is plenty of power from the engine.  At the same time, I had a compression test performed on the engine, the results are below:

Cylinder 1-150 psi
Cylinder 2-151 psi
Cylinder 3-155 psi
Cylinder 4-150 psi
Cylinder 5-160 psi
Cylinder 6-160 psi

As you can see from the pictures, the most immediate issue facing this FJ is the rust, the tub should be considered gone or close to gone.  However, the chassis shows remarkably little rust (I have additional photos of the undercarriage, please let me know if you want them sent to you), and the hard top, doors, hood, etc should all be salvageable.

This Land Cruiser starts easily (first crank), the carb and engine appear to be in excellent working order, and after driving this FJ, I can attest that the clutch is very strong and there is plenty of power.  The vehicle also has an Optima red top battery as well as Warn locking hubs.  This should be an excellent candidate for a full restoration that can also be driven throughout the process.

The sale includes what appears to be the original Bill of Sale as well as the original key.  Also included is a complete owner's manual.

If you have ANY questions, would like to see additional photos, would like to receive videos of the vehicle with the engine idling, or need any additional information, my cell phone is 615-300-6004.  Please feel free to call and/or text during normal business hours, and I will make every effort to accommodate you.

Please note: I am an automobile dealer in Nashville, TN.  My main focus is finding, driving, buying and selling Land Cruisers and other vintage SUV's.  As such, I must collect sales tax for Tennessee residents ONLY; I do charge a doc fee of $199 per vehicle.  I do have several other FJ's available, our website is RockstarMotorcars.com.

I accept the following forms of payment: Credit cards (3% swipe fee applies), personal checks, cashier's checks, wire transfers (small fee applies), and cash.  This FJ40 will come with a 30 day temporary tag, and I will only send out the title after all funds have been collected, title will be sent by FedEx.  Vehicle will be made available to depart our location only after all funds have been collected.  All sales are final.

YES, I will end this auction early for the right offer, please contact me directly on 615-300-6004.

I DO accept vehicles as trades on a limited basis, you must bring your vehicle to Nashville for me to evaluate it before I will sell you this FJ40.

I can have this FJ40 delivered to your front door nationally or internationally for far less than you might think (i.e. $500 to DC, $700 to Los Angeles); please provide your zip code for an accurate estimate on shipping.

Please consider all aspects of owning a classic Toyota Land Cruiser BEFORE bidding, a bid is a legally binding contract.  Please remember to check with your spouse/child/partner/pet/religious leader and ensure that you have "permission" to purchase this vehicle AND that you have all necessary funds in place, all nonpaying bidders will be fully prosecuted.

Again, if you have any questions or need additional photos/videos, please feel free to call or text me on 615-300-6004.  This is a great Land Cruiser that drives well and could be the base for a great restoration, thank you for looking!

Two new RWD Toyota sports cars to join FR-S?

Fri, 09 Aug 2013

Toyota as we know it could become a thing of the past. According to Australian site Car Advice, the Japanese brand known for bland cruisers like the Camry and Corolla is preparing to bring two new rear-drive cars to market that would slot above and below the Scion-badged FR-S. This is very, very good news.
Car Advice spoke to the GT86/FR-S' chief engineer, Tatsuya Tada, who claimed, "Akio Toyoda always says to me, Toyota sports car [family] should be three sports car brothers. 86 is in the middle." The oldest "brother" would be the spiritual successor to the Supra, even if it doesn't wear that name. Tada is in charge of that project, while a sub-GT86 project is being headed-up elsewhere.
Tada refused to comment on names (CA specifically mentions MR2 and Celica) for the new small car, but did say that, "Yes it is rear-wheel drive and that's Toyota's strong position - Toyota sports car must be rear-wheel drive." Perhaps the juiciest bit of information obtained from Tada's interview with Car Advice was his hinting that both new sports cars would be joint ventures, like the GT86/FR-S/Subaru BRZ triplets. Tada wouldn't say who Toyota was in bed with on the smaller model, but did mention that the Supra would be a product of the world's largest automaker's partnership with BMW.

Toyota recalling 800k Camry, Avalon and Venza models for AC issue

Thu, 17 Oct 2013

Toyota has announced plans to voluntarily recall 803,000 vehicles from model years 2012 and 2013, over concerns with the air conditioning condenser housing. The recall covers the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid and Venza, although the exact split between affected models wasn't available.
According to Toyota, the condenser can leak onto an airbag control module, which in turn could cause a short circuit. In most cases, this will just lead to an airbag warning light, but in rarer instances, the airbags could fail to deploy or pop out of their own accord. There's also a concern over a loss of power steering if the airbag control module develops a short.
It's unclear if there have been any injuries or crashes relating to the defects. Toyota will begin informing owners of affected vehicles via first class mail, and will ask them to report to dealerships for recall work, involving the installation of a cover on the condenser housing.

The ugly economics of green vehicles

Sat, Sep 20 2014

It's fair to say that most consumers would prefer a green vehicle, one that has a lower impact on the environment and goes easy on costly fuel (in all senses of the term). The problem is that most people can't – or won't – pay the price premium or put up with the compromises today's green cars demand. We're not all "cashed-up greenies." In 2013, the average selling price of a new vehicle was $32,086. The truth is that most Americans can't afford a new car, green or not. In 2013, the average selling price of a new vehicle was $32,086. According to a recent Federal Reserve study, the median income for American families was $46,700 in 2013, a five-percent decline from $49,000 in 2010. While $32,000 for a car may not sound like a lot to some, it's about $630 a month financing for 48 months, assuming the buyer can come up with a $6,400 down payment. And that doesn't include gas, insurance, taxes, maintenance and all the rest. It's no wonder that a recent study showed that the average family could afford a new car in only one of 25 major US cities. AutoTrader conducted a recent survey of 1,900 millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) about their new and used car buying habits. Isabelle Helms, AutoTrader's vice president of research, said millennials are "big on small" vehicles, which tend to be more affordable. Millennials also yearn for alternative-powered vehicles, but "they generally can't afford them." When it comes to the actual behavior of consumers, the operative word is "affordable," not "green." In 2012, US new car sales rose to 14.5 million. But according to Manheim Research, at 40.5 million units, used car sales were almost three times as great. While the days of the smoke-belching beater are mostly gone, it's a safe bet that the used cars are far less green in terms of gas mileage, emissions, new technology, etc., than new ones. Who Pays the Freight? Green cars, particularly alternative-fuel green cars, cost more than their conventional gas-powered siblings. A previous article discussed how escalating costs and limited utility drove me away from leasing a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hyundai Tucson, which at $50,000, was nearly twice the cost of the equivalent gas-powered version. In Hyundai's defense, it's fair to ask who should pay the costs of developing and implementing new technology vehicles and the infrastructure to support them.
