10% of Toyota China dealers may drop due to losses
Thu, Jan 1 2015News about the auto industry in China is usually positive thanks to booming sales and an ever-increasing number of factories across the country. But in some cases, it appears that the dealers with the job of actually selling all of those vehicles are having trouble finding buyers. The result is cars piling up on lots and showrooms resisting against automakers. Japanese automakers already face a tough road to success in China, but the FAW-Toyota joint venture is especially struggling this year. According to Bloomberg, as many as 10 percent of the dealers might have to close or stop selling the brand because they just can't make money selling the vehicles on their lots. Also, 95 percent of the showrooms are reportedly losing money. The issue facing FAW-Toyota sellers is mostly a case of supply and demand. Automakers in China mandate the number and types of vehicles that dealers sell. However, the inventory from all makes is at its highest level since August 2013, according to Bloomberg. The situation leaves dealers with packed lots, and cars often require discounts to move. Making matters harder is that showrooms have annual sales targets, which are linked to bonuses. This money can account for over half of the sellers' annual profits, according to Bloomberg. The FAW-Toyota dealers are pushing back by asking Toyota for 2.2 billion yuan ($355 million) to pay for costs associated with the extra inventory. It also lowered sales targets by six percent earlier this year and has requested no increase in the numbers for 2015. Toyota confirms 2016 Tacoma for Detroit
Wed, Dec 10 2014A week on from an announcement by Toyota's Bob Carter, the Japanese marque has formally announced that the 2016 Toyota Tacoma will make its global debut next month at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. Not only that, but the company has given us a very minute (and very muddy) teaser image, showing the truck's tailgate and driver's side taillight. Like its big brother, the Tundra, the 2016 Tacoma will feature its name embossed on its tailgate. Beyond that, though, there's really not much to be gleaned from this sole teaser shot. Of course, we'll have much, much more on the next-generation Taco when it arrives in a month's time. Until then, check out Toyota's hilariously brief and to-the-point press release, available below. Tacoma. Detroit. January 12. It's on. December 10, 2014 Toyota's rolling out the all-new 2016 Tacoma at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 12.
Toyota sees Camry share loss despite predicting increasing sales
Tue, 02 Apr 2013Toyota may be set to lose share the midsize sedan market. While speaking with Automotive News, Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz said that if his company kept pace with the current swell in the market for family four doors, Toyota would need to sell around 500,000 Camry models. "I'm not sure we can do much more than 400 [thousand] today," Lentz said.
But that doesn't mean Camry sales are shrinking - on the contrary, Lentz thinks Toyota will likely sell more Camry units in 2013 than it did in 2012, it's just that the company isn't keeping pace with segment's current explosion in popularity. Industry wide, midsized sedan sales have increased by 20 percent. "Are we going to lose [Camry] share? Probably so," Lentz said, "but we will continue to grow in raw volume."
Toyota sold 404,886 Camry units last year, and the company just revised its 2013 sales objective from 2.18 million units earlier this year to 2.2-million plus units, so while things are looking up for the brand and Camry sales may be on the rise, Toyota may not have the muscle to keep up its share in the sedan segment. Whether that's because of a production bottleneck or a predicted sales ceiling isn't clear. We've got a call in and will update this news item if/when we learn more.
