Toyota says C-HR Concept is more of a Prius preview than we thought

When the designers thought they were just about finished with the new look of the fourth-generation Toyota Prius hybrid, higher-ups did not like what they saw and sent those designers back to the proverbial drawing board to come up with something a little spicier. Duly inspired, the designers came up with something last spring that may look a bit like the C-HR crossover concept, Automotive News says. For those looking for a Prius design with a little more bite, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The C-HR hybrid concept isn't a direct preview of the new Prius, but the "diamond architecture" features like thick wheel wells and mean-looking grille could make an appearance on the hybrid. Those aren't exactly familiar Prius materials, but they may be coming to the next version of the world's most popular hybrid, whose production debut has been pushed back until the end of next year. It is also notable that there will likely be a far greater design difference between the standard Prius hatchback and the plug-in hybrid variant, which are pretty much identical in their current versions. The C-HR concept, whose look has been compared to that of the Nissan Juke, was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last fall. We think it looks good, and wouldn't mind seeing some of the touches in the new hybrid.

The Mercedes-Benz S-500 Plug-In Hybrid has earned an Environmental Certificate from the TUV Sud technical inspection authority. The award is based on a lifecycle assessment of the vehicle. This includes the ability to reduce CO2 emissions by 43 percent through charging, and by 56 percent if charged using hydroelectricity. Read more in the press release below. Daimler is expanding its production capacity for lithium-ion batteries. The company is investing around 100 million euros in its subsidiary Deutsche ACCUmotive, who will provide batteries for the electric Smart Fortwo and Forfour, as well as various Mercedes-Benz models. By the end of the construction, Deutsche ACCUmotive will have quadrupled production and logistics space since 2011. Read more in the press release below. Honda has begun sales of its Grace hybrid sedan in Japan. The Grace is based on the Honda Fit and uses the automaker's Sport Hybrid i-DCD system. It comes in front- and four-wheel-drive versions and uses a seven-speed DCT with built-in motor. The Honda Grace starts at the equivalent of about $16,500. Read more in the press release below. Honda has begun operation of its wind farm in Brazil. The farm consists of nine wind turbines, expected to produce about 95,000 MWh of electricity per year, which is on par with Honda's consumption for automobile production in the country. Controlled Power Technologies and other groups are calling for an international 48-volt electrical standard for vehicles. The groups called for the standard at the International Conference Automotive 48 V Power Supply Systems, saying that the 48V standard for mild hybrids would help make the systems more affordable. This will make it easier for automakers to meet the more stringent CO2 standards anticipated in coming years along with the introduction of the World Light vehicles Test Procedures. 100-year-old Yellowstone ranger station now powered by Camry Hybrid batteries [w/video]

With a new project, Toyota is bringing power to the prairie and finding a way to reuse nickel-metal hydride batteries at the same time. The automaker recently completed assisting Yellowstone National Park's installation of a solar power station at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch to electrify the ranger station and education center there for the first time. Toyota's major part in the system is an array of 208 batteries that are repurposed from old Camry Hybrid sedans, and they can store 85 kilowatt-hours of energy at a time. That's as much as one 85-kWh battery pack from one top-of-the-line Tesla Model S. Toyota figures that the whole setup should generate enough annual electricity for six average US homes, which is plenty for the ranch. For a constant source of power, the site plans to install a micro-hydro turbine in a nearby stream in 2016. Prior to creating the wall of batteries to store all of this energy, Toyota disassembled and tested each one. It also installed a new management system on them to maximize their lifespan.
