Model Overview
The Camry is available in many different trim levels, ranging from basic to luxurious, with either a four-cylinder engine or a V6. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine incorporates some changes for improved smoothness and makes 158 hp and 161 lb-ft of torque. It comes with either a five-speed manual or automatic. The V6 is a new 3.5-liter that develops 268 hp and 248 lb-ft and is paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 has Toyota's Dual VVT-i (variable valve timing with intelligence) system, which helps optimize power and efficiency through the entire operating range. The Camry Hybrid pairs an Atkinson-cycle 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine making 147 hp with a 40-hp electric motor system--together producing a combined output that nearly matches that of last year's Camry V6. Power is delivered through a continuously variable transmission. The Hybrid also includes an "ECO" button that limits the power drawn by the climate control system and slightly increases fuel economy. All 2007 Camrys come with increased safety equipment, including anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and brake assist, along with seat-mounted side air bags and side-curtain air bags. Vehicle stability control (VSC) is available as a standalone option ($650), while Camry Hybrid models come with standard vehicle dynamics integrated management (VDIM), a new stability control system that brings together inputs from the throttle, brakes, and steering and is able to make minor corrections to maintain stability.Besides the new Hybrid, Camrys come in four different trim levels, including the economical CE, mid-range LE, lavishly equipped XLE, and sporty SE. The CE, which starts at $18,470 and is only available with the four-cylinder, while the LE, XLE, and SE can be had with either engine. CE standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and a six-speaker AM/FM/CD sound system, while the LE adds more features like a power driver's seat and remote keyless entry. XLE models start at $24,900 and include a long list of upgrades including dual-zone climate control, a 440-watt, eight-speaker JBL sound system with six-disc changer and Bluetooth compatibility, a power moonroof, reclining rear seats, aluminum wheels, and fog lamps. The sportier SE model adds a blackout grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a sport suspension with lower ride height to the LE's equipment. All Camrys get a multi-function display that includes trip-computer functions such as average fuel consumption, while the Hybrid model gets features similar to the XLE inside, plus a push-button Smart Key starting system. Rear-seat legroom has been improved slightly on all the models.Standalone options on the CE and LE include satellite radio ($449) and 16-inch alloy wheels ($795). Attention-getting 18-inch, ten-spoke TRD alloy wheels ($2,100) are available on SE styles, while remote start ($529), a moonroof ($940), and the JBL sound system ($1,000) are notable options on the LE only. Major options on XLE models include a DVD navigation system and the Smart Key system (available with the V6 only).

New Toyota Supra may get a twin-turbo Lexus V6

Fri, Jul 22 2016

We've heard endless rumors that a successor to the much loved and much missed Toyota Supra is in the works. Toyota hasn't done much to deny these conversations. On the contrary, the FT-1 concept from two years ago and the partnership with BMW have only fueled the fire. Now, talk of a new Lexus engine has led to speculation about the supposed Supra's powertrain. To be clear, this is mostly heresay. Few things have actually been confirmed, but based on what we know a few conclusions can be drawn. We know that BMW and Toyota are working on a joint product. We've seen mules testing out in the wild. In BMW guise, the possibly Austrian-built car will more than likely powered by turbocharged inline four and six-cylinder engines. Unless Toyota wants to use Bimmer power, they'll need to shoehorn one of their own under the hood. That leads us to this rumor of a twin-turbocharged V6 that will presumably power the new Lexus GS and LS. Japanese automotive publication Mag-X first reported on this engine. It was then picked up by YouWheel and Car Keys. Mag-X cites Toyota insiders and even gives an engine code, 943F. This engine allegedly will make more than 400 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque. While unconfirmed, this makes sense for Lexus. Nearly every luxury competitor has a six-cylinder engine with forced induction. While Toyota has previously had turbocharged inline-sixes, they've never produced a factory turbo V6. Every automaker is downsizing engines in an effort to meet fuel economy and emissions regulations. Toyota and Lexus will follow suit. Taking that V6 and tuning it for a performance application is a solid, if unverified, possibility. Related Video:

Impala crashes into Land Cruiser... to hide from a cheetah

Fri, 12 Jul 2013

What would you do if a wild animal jumped into your vehicle through an open window during an African safari? What if said animal was an impala being chased by cheetahs? Though the scenario seems unbelievable, that's just what happened to a group of tourists in Kruger National Park in South Africa, and it was all caught on video.
With the tour groups stopped, a motorist with a video camera handy happens to catch the unlikely sight of a herd of impalas (not that kind of Impala) jumping over the tarmac while being followed, quickly of course, by two cheetahs. The feline predators thought they had cornered one impala and were closing in for the kill when it jumped through the open window of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - South Africa's version of the Lexus GX. Fortunately for the occupants of said vehicle, the cheetahs did not follow.
A short while later, one of the occupants in the Toyota fearlessly opens a door to let the poor animal out. It must have been its lucky day, because the cheetahs didn't take pursuit. Check out the circle life get interrupted by this traffic jam in the video below.

Toyota promoting Mirai as if hydrogen tax credit never went away

Wed, Jan 28 2015

At the end of December, the US federal government let the $8,000 tax credit for hydrogen-powered vehicles expire. Despite this little wrinkle, Toyota is still promoting the upcoming 2016 Mirai fuel cell vehicle as a car that will cost under $50,000. In some cases a lot less, since it may also qualify for a $5,000 incentive in California. The car has a $57,500 MSRP, but Nihar Patel, vice president of North American Business Strategy for Toyota Motor Sales, spoke at the 2015 Washington Auto Show last week, and said that the Mirai could cost $44,500 in California. You can see this in the video at around minute four. Toyota knows that the federal incentives have expired, since the real news from the show was Patel's public request to the federal government that the $8,000 tax credit be extended. "We think that the federal credit expiration last year puts [hydrogen] customers in a fairly disadvantageous postion," he said. Plug-in vehicle buyers can still get up to $7,500 tax credit and, "we believe that this inequity needs to be fixed," he said. You can see this in the video at minute 10:20. Toyota said including both the after-incentives price and the call to reinstate those incentives was intentional since it shows a discrepancy between hydrogen and plug-in vehicles in the eyes of the feds. We asked Toyota's director of Energy and Environmental Research, Technical and Regulatory Affairs, Robert Wimmer, for more details on Toyota's request. "[The Mirai] being a ZEV and battery electrics also being ZEVs, we just want to make the playing field as level as possible," he said, adding that any extension would last "for the run of the vehicle," which would be three years. He admitted that the extension might only be for one or two years, if it happens at all. (A Toyota spokesperson clarified to AutoblogGreen that the Mirai program will not end after three years.) And that's the problem. "The tax process is difficult to predict," he said. "The two challenges we have now are that both houses of Congress are Republican and also that there has been talk for a while about comprehensive tax reform. If that moves forward, then extenders would probably be put on the back burner as comprehensive tax reform is discussed." Wimmer would not reveal any details about how Toyota is pressuring the government to act, only saying that Toyota's has people lobbying up on Capitol Hill.
