 For sale:

1999 Toyota Camry. I belive it is the LE model. It has a 4 cylinder engine (2.2L) with 145,505 miles. Its options include the following: Automatic transmission with overdrive, air conditioning (blows COLD), power locks, power windows, power driver's seat (only), cruise control, anti-lock braking system, driver and passenger front airbags, rear spoiler. It has a full size spare in the trunk.

I have included several pictures of the car to eliminate any chance of surprises. Please read the full description and review all photos.
I am not a car dealer. I am a private owner and am describing every feature and fault of this car to the best of my ability.

The Good:
The car has had the following parts replaced (with new, OEM quality parts) within the last year: Rear shocks / struts, front brakes, inner and outer tie rods, spark plugs and ignition wires, air filter, pcv valve, thermostat, and window motors (2). The coolant and transmission fluid have also been changed within the last year. The oil was changed regularly at 3,000 mile intervals. This car also has 4 brand new Cooper CS4 Touring tires with less than 1,000 miles on them. The interior is in reasonably good shape for it's age. There are a few scuffs on the passenger side of the dash and some black stains in the rear footwell. The aftermarket CD/MP3 player accepts usb devices and works well. It's a new model, less than a year old. There are two new Rockford Fosgate speakers in the front doors. All 4 speakers work well.
The engine and transmission appear to be in good shape. No major issues. Decent on gas.

The Bad:
This car spent a good portion of its life in New York City, and the bumpers show evidence that most of the people in my neighborhood cannot parallel park properly. The exterior otherwise shows wear typical of a car which is about 14 years old.

The Ugly:
This car does need some work. The front suspension still makes some clunking noises. I've been advised that this is the sway bar links and it's a relatively cheap fix. I believe the car leaks some oil. This is not uncommon for a car of this age and doesn't amount to much. I replace less than 1 quart between oil changes. I cannot tell where it's coming from. There is an exhaust leak somewhere toward the front of the car. It's been this way for a few years and it's never caused the car to fail inspection. Additionally, there is a warning light on in the instrument panel. This orange light, shows in the lower left corner in one of the photos, indicates that a brake light is out. A brake light is not out. I think it might have a short or the light is on in error.

Unintended acceleration settlement hits Toyota's Q4 bottom line

Fri, 09 May 2014

Depending on how you want to look at things, the US Attorney's Office $1.2-billion dollar settlement with Toyota in March over its unintended acceleration recall was either a big blow to the company or completely inconsequential. From January to March, net income fell five percent to 297 billion yen ($2.89 billion), compared to 313.9 billion yen ($3.05 billion) a year ago. However, the automaker still posted record full-year profits worldwide.
Operating profit also fell in the US by 9 percent to $498.1 million for the quarter, but sales were up by 6 percent to 581,261 vehicles. According to Automotive News, global revenue was still up from January to March by about 13 percent and vehicle sales were up 6 percent to 2.58 million units.
However, the payment to the feds did little to hold the company back last year. For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, Toyota had net income of 1.82 trillion yen ($17.7 billion), compared to 962.1 billion yen ($9.5 billion) in the last fiscal year. Total vehicle sales were also up.

Toyota Recalling Millions Of Cars Over Multiple Concerns

Wed, Apr 9 2014

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling nearly 1.8 million vehicles in the U.S. for various safety problems, including air bags that may fail to deploy. The Japanese automaker announced the U.S. recall Wednesday as part of a broader recall of 6.39 million vehicles - and 27 Toyota models - globally. In the U.S., the recall includes: - 1.3 million vehicles with faulty electrical connections that could cause the air bags to deactivate. Included are the 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Tacoma, 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe. If the air bags deactivate, they could fail to deploy after a crash. - 472,500 small cars with defective springs in the front seat rails, which could prevent the seats from locking in place. Included are the 2006-2010 Yaris hatchback, 2007-2010 Yaris sedan and the 2008-2010 Scion XD. Toyota said it is currently working on remedies for the problems. Dealers will replace the defective parts for free when replacement parts are available. The Pontiac Vibe, which is made by General Motors Co., is included in the recall because Toyota designed and engineered it for GM when the two companies shared a factory in California. GM says 40,500 Vibes will be recalled, and says GM dealers will make repairs when Toyota sends them the parts. The air bag issue is unrelated to a separate GM recall of 2.6 million vehicles for an ignition switch defect that can also deactivate the air bags. The Vibe isn't included in that recall. Toyota said no injuries or crashes have been reported related to the recalls. By region, the recall affects 2.3 million vehicles in North America, 1.09 million vehicles in Japan and 810,000 vehicles in Europe. Other regions affected by the recall include Africa, South America and the Middle East. The recall is one of Toyota's largest since 2009 and 2010, when the company issued a series of recalls totaling more than 10 million vehicles for various problems including faulty brakes, sticky gas pedals and ill-fitting floor mats. Toyota is under pressure to announce recalls quickly after a U.S. government investigation found it hid information about past defects. Last month, the company agreed to pay $1.2 billion to settle that investigation. It also paid fines totaling $66 million to the U.S. government for delays in reporting unintended acceleration problems.

Tougher than steel: Wood pulp could make lighter auto parts

Tue, Aug 15 2017

KYOTO, Japan — The global push among carmakers to make ever lighter vehicles is leading some auto suppliers in Japan to turn to what seems like an unlikely steel substitute — wood pulp. Japanese researchers and auto component makers say a material made from wood pulp weighs just one-fifth of steel and can be five times stronger. The material - cellulose nanofibers — could become a viable alternative to steel in the decades ahead, they say, although it faces competition from carbon-based materials, and remains a long way from being commercially viable.> Related: Jay Leno drives the Renew cannabis car — hemp you can't dent Reducing the weight of a vehicle will be critical as manufacturers move to bring electric cars into the mainstream. Batteries are an expensive but vital component, so a reduction in car weight will mean fewer batteries will be needed to power the vehicle, saving on costs. "Lightweighting is a constant issue for us," said Masanori Matsushiro, a project manager overseeing body design at Toyota. "But we also have to resolve the issue of high manufacturing costs before we see an increased use of new, lighter-weight materials in mass-volume cars."A NEW PROCESS Researchers at Kyoto University and major parts suppliers such as Denso Corp, Toyota's biggest supplier, and DaikyoNishikawa Corp, are working with plastics incorporated with cellulose nanofibers — made by breaking down wood pulp fibers into several hundredths of a micron (one thousandth of a millimeter). Cellulose nanofibers have been used in a variety of products ranging from ink to transparent displays, but their potential use in cars has been enabled by the "Kyoto Process," under which chemically treated wood fibers are kneaded into plastics while simultaneously being broken down into nanofibers, slashing the cost of production to roughly one-fifth that of other processes. "This is the lowest-cost, highest-performance application for cellulose nanofibers, and that's why we're focusing on its use in auto and aircraft parts," Kyoto University Professor Hiroaki Yano, who is leading the research, told Reuters in an interview. The university, along with auto parts suppliers, are currently developing a prototype car using cellulose nanofiber-based parts to be completed in 2020.
