Recharge Wrap-up: Q50 Hybrid video, Iran's biodiesel weed
Mon, Aug 10 2015A new video from Infiniti showcases the Q50 Hybrid's kinetic energy recovery technology, borrowed from Formula One. The video details what is going on inside both the Q50 Hybrid and the racecar when it gathers energy to store for later use, offering better performance than an internal combustion engine alone. In the Q50 Hybrid, that electric energy helps the car accelerate from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. The video also serves to highlight the relationship between racing innovation and performance and efficiency improvements in production vehicles. See the video above. The 2015 Toyota Prius C has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The compact hybrid, updated for the 2015 model year, has been upgraded from a "poor" to "acceptable" rating in the small overlap crash test, placing it on the Top Safety Pick list. Beginning in the 2016 model year, cars will have to score a "good" rating on the test to make the list, which means further improvements will be necessary if Toyota wants the Prius C to maintain its safety status with the IIHS. John and Lisa Brichetto's Northington Energy LLC received a state loan to produce biodiesel in 2011, but the facility never started production and was later foreclosed upon. In addition to the $142,215 the Brichettos defrauded from Tennessee, the state also invested in utilities and roads, while the US Department of Agriculture also paid for site improvements. Scientists at the Islamic Azad University have created two liters of biomass for biofuel from flixweed. Flixweed, also called herb-Sophia and tansy mustard, is a non-edible weed that grows in various climates with little to no effort. It was found to contain 22 percent oil and fatty acids, and the biomass contains oxygenated chemical components. "This issue is important because the atomic oxygen in the fuel of a car directly cuts exhaust and the dangerous carbon monoxide and cancerous particles suspended in air," says Mehdi Alami, a chemistry graduate working on the project. Toyota and Mazda set to expand partnership
Mon, May 11 2015Toyota and Mazda are already teaming up for the Scion iA and Mazda2, but that partnership might just be the beginning. Reuters reports the two Japanese companies could expand their work together, with Toyota chipping in its experience with both fuel cells and plug-in-hybrid tech, and Mazda contributing its know-how in regards to its Skyactiv line of engines. The report cites a pair of unnamed sources that are "not authorized to discuss the matter publicly." The move, on the surface, is certainly appealing for both parties. Mazda has very little experience with hybrids (remember the Ford-rebadged Tribute Hybrid?), let alone something as advanced as a fuel-cell vehicle. Teaming with Toyota, arguably the world's greatest hybrid manufacturer, would give it a serious leg up. For the Japanese giant, meanwhile, a partnership with Mazda could expand the economy of scale for the Mirai FCV's tech, while Skyactiv engines would do well in replacing the base engines in cars like the Corolla, Camry, and RAV4. What are your thoughts? Would an expanded partnership between Toyota and Mazda make sense? Can you think of any drawbacks? Have your say in Comments. Next Toyota Supra might be called S-FR
Wed, Jun 3 2015In the world of car-rumors, those surrounding the revival of the Toyota Supra are rivaled only mid-engine Corvettes and billion-dollar barn finds for Internet potency. Let's face it, we love them as much as you do. Entering stage right then is your latest Supra tidbit. The always-vigilant forum masters at SupraMKV.com have been spending caffeine-fueled nights combing through the US Patent and Trademark Office websites, it seems. The recent result of their efforts is a trademark filing for "Toyota S-FR," in reference to "automobiles and structural parts thereof." While hardly a smoking gun, Supra theorists propose that the May 28 filing could signal the way forward for a new sports car. The "S" might be Toyota's homage to the Supra nameplate, with "FR" obviously indicating a front-engine, rear-drive layout. We'd be surprised if Toyota was so wiling to throw away the brand equity built in to the Supra name – the company did re-up its Supra mark. Then again, we would've called the FR-S "Celica," too. Go figure. Of course, the trademark could be for just about anything else. A sub-FR-S model is one proposition, though it could just as easily be a concept car, or nothing at all. Sleuths, tell us what you think in Comments, below. Related Video:
