1999 Toyota Avalon

I have owned this car since 2010 and it has been great.  Runs strong and drive it daily around 100 miles.

The Good-
- Runs Strong and Shifts Great!
- 163,483 Miles.  Have seen MANY Avalons that have lasted 250k+ so there is alot of life left in this car.
- Interior is Clean (Non Smoker)
- Just replaced tires in the last few months
- In the last year spent around $1000 on little repairs to, I believe it was the front struts or tie rods.
- Power Sun Roof works great.
- Gets good gas mileage and the strong V6 engine gives it alot of power for a nice ride.

The Not So Good:
- Car has been hit in the back while stopped I believe once before I purchase it (the bumper was replaced) and then once after.  It was hit in 2011 while I was at a stop sign.  I took the  car to the body shop and they tried to straighten it as much as possible.  Due to the hit in the back it could not be straighten totally but as you can see, while it is noticeable, it is not horrible.  The biggest issue is that the trunk latch will sometimes come loose and then the trunk doesn't close until it is re-alligned.  I have had to fix it twice in the last year and is probbaly a real minor fix but have not wanted to put money into the body.  As you will see in the pictures their is a dent, the body and the lights don't completely line up along with the trunk.  Currently I have the trunk tied shut and have not repaired the latch again. (see picture)
- Paint is good.  No pealing, chipping and have not noticed any rust.  There are several minor scratches throughout and small little dings.
- The check engine light has always been on since I have owned it.  I was told it was a sensor but have never had it checked since it drives good.  I think the car burns a little oil but nothing major. (see picture)
- Radio on/of knob is missing. (see picture)  Drivers seat heater is not working I don't believe.
- The section where the power windows and locks is located on the drivers door is loose (see picture).
- Not sure if the brake pads are getting close to needing to be changed.  Every once in a while I hear something from rear brakes when I just begin driving in the morning.  Battery is good also but have noticed some corrosion on it.
-  A/C worked last summer but noticed in not as cold towards the end. Was going to recharge this summer if I was keeping it.

I have listed as much detail and have put a bunch of I can to make sure you know what you are getting.  This is a car that I would feel comfortable driving on road trips and would make a great car for a student.

There's a familiar ring to this 1966 video of GM's hydrogen ElectroVan

Thu, Dec 18 2014

"What we need is fuel cells that can run on a hydrocarbon fuel and air." It can be fun and educational to revisit the past as we look into the future. While we do have cars that plug in today, the first big batch of hydrogen powered vehicles is not yet arrived (but the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell CUV is leading the way). The idea of hydrogen as a promising future technology was also true in 1960s, when General Motors made a promotional movie for the ElectroVan. Turns out, the future then shared more than a little with the future now. As you can see in the short promotional video below for the hydrogen-powered ElectroVan, a modified 1966 GMC HandiVan, a big hurdle in the mid 1960s was the difficulty of obtaining hydrogen fuel. GM offered a possible solution at the time: "Hydrogen and oxygen are expensive and impractical fuels for a car. What we need is fuel cells that can run on a hydrocarbon fuel and air." Unlike today's hydrogen fuel cell cars, the ElectroVan used liquid hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells to get a range of between 100 and 150 miles. Not bad for the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle in the world. GM tested the ElectroVan on the GM grounds before sending it into storage and then to the company's heritage center. For another view to the past, this time with some focus on electric vehicles, take a look at a video from the 1994 Chicago Auto Show, also available below. Twenty years ago, the green vehicle hype was on the Toyota EV-50 electric car, the solar-powered Honda EVX (and a solar Honda racing car) and a hydrogen-powered Mazda Miata. The announcer's enthusiasm is contagious, but as we all know, none of these vehicles ever made it to dealerships. This content is hosted by a third party. Cars we're thankful we drove in 2019

Thu, Nov 28 2019

We drove a lot of cars in 2019, and there's still a month to go. We drove them in our home office in Michigan, at our remote offices in Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Columbus, Ohio, and throughout the globe on myriad press launches. We could count them, but hey, that seems boastful.  Instead, we want to be thankful. Not only for the opportunity to do this wonderful task some might describe as a "job," but for the new, shiny cars that brighten our days (and most hopefully yours). We asked our fellow editors which car they were most thankful to drive in 2019 ... here are our answers. 2019 Hyundai Veloster N Performance Senior Editor Alex Kierstein Every once in a while a car comes along that changes the narrative on a company or its segment, and everyone scrambles to experience it for themselves. This year, for me, that car’s the Veloster N Performance, perhaps the most transformative car the companyÂ’s ever built. Everyone whoÂ’s driven it, here and elsewhere, says it captures all those intangibles that make great driving hatchbacks great. And IÂ’m thankful that I got a go in it before all of them left the fleet, because it does. It upends the segment long dominated by the GTI, a car that nails its brief. The N is rowdy and loud, sure, but it also has some of the most deftly tuned suspension IÂ’ve come across in a front driver. My advice: if youÂ’re in the market for something fun and unique, go test drive a Veloster N. I think youÂ’ll be thankful you did. 2019 Hyundai Veloster N View 47 Photos 2019 Audi E-Tron Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder IÂ’m pleased that I got to drive the Audi E-Tron. ThatÂ’s high praise for a year in which I also drove the stellar Jaguar I-Pace. The E-Tron, while not as sporty as the Jaguar, is excellently executed, and feels like a more refined, polished offering. ItÂ’s quick, whisper-quiet, comfortable, stylish inside and out, and incredibly sturdy. Some may lament that it doesnÂ’t do much to stand out from ICE vehicles, but I donÂ’t think it needs to. What it does need to do is win over the electro-skeptical, and I think Audi put its best foot forward with a crossover that can do just that, and more. So, yeah, not only am I thankful that I got to drive it, IÂ’m glad that itÂ’s compelling enough that itÂ’ll hopefully make potential customers feel the same. 2020 Audi E-Tron View 13 Photos 2013 Peugeot 508 West Coast Editor James Riswick My choice totally sucks.

Hyundai tops Toyota in annual CarMD Vehicle Health Index

Fri, 06 Dec 2013

CarMD has released its third annual Vehicle Health Index, which for the 2013 tracked the frequency and cost of repairs for "check engine" problems of 119-million vehicles built between the 2003 and 2013 model years. For the first two years of the index, Toyota ranked at the top of the list, but this year's results see Hyundai moved to number one, pushing Toyota down a spot.
The Korean automaker's rise to the top has been "fueled by its low repair frequency," according to CarMD. Toyota is second to Hyundai in lowest repair frequency, but Toyotas also have the highest average cost of repair. (Interestingly, General Motors vehicles have the lowest average.) Both Toyota's and Hyundai's manufacturer "health" ratings suffered this year, but Toyota took a bigger hit, which also is what helped Hyundai achieve the top ranking.
While Hyundai is the top manufacturer in the index, the 2012 Toyota Camry is the top vehicle. The best-ranking Hyundai was the 2010 Elantra (behind three Nissan models and four Toyotas), which took the number eight spot. Hyundai has six other vehicles in the top 100.
