Those who “know” know that this is a special machine. Manual shifting bliss in a duty grade
off-road vehicle. Late 3rd generation
4Runner, built in Japan, frame-based, cast iron block, cast aluminum heads,
locking differential – and a smooth quiet ride that’s great on highway. Found a older low-miles BMW X5 with manual so
I’m taking one more turn in the 3-pedaled 4wd suv fantasy world.
I drive my cars and motorcycles gingerly and civilly, let them
warm before loading engine, go slow and easy on the shifter to let the synchs
figure it out on their schedule, use synth oil, dodge bumps, blip throttle when
shifting to preserve clutch, brake with foresight, etc. – and it has been babied on highways and flat
city roads and not off-road (ok, I’m embarrassed) . You can feel it - truck starts perfectly,
consumes no oil, idles smoothly, doesn't clunk or rattle over bumps, etc. It is impressive and has been a fantastic
vehicle – it is a survivor. Have
original manuals. It’s fantastic to
drive – no deficits on highway, smooth pedals, tracks straight, no play in
steering. Have original trunk shade, spare,
jack.
My records are spotty due to a disorganized divorce (and owner),
but I have the basics. I bought it in
2004 with 80K miles on it. New clutch
around 120K miles. It recently got new
mass air flow sensor, plug wires/plugs, timing belt, radiator and valve cover
gaskets. Interstate battery with some
tread left. Sunroof never had probs and works
fine in both modes. AC blows cold and
has never had an issue.
Issues you’d see/notice if you came and drove it: Backed into a small/stealthy/solid crepemyrtle tree and received
dent/slight bend in rear bumper and tailgate.
Once had minor collision with a suburban back bumper and received new front
side panels, radiator, bumper, and lights from State Farm (original hood with
its original paint is present and undamaged – car came out looking mucho better
actually). Passenger back quarterpanel
has a dent. Paint is in good shape – car
spent a lot of its time in garage. Tires
are way-past-due Michelins but they don’t vibrate and have been excellent. A couple of small cig burns in seat and floor
carpet but absolutely no cig odor (cracked window and non-recirc make this
possible). Leaks a bit of oil but you
don’t see it on ground – only an odor. This
truck has never required addition of oil between changes. Reverse lights and dome lights
intermittent. Cassette and backlight out
on radio. Electric antenna struggling.
Questions welcome. Good
luck bidding. I hate to sell it.

Minivan market not what it used to be, but margins make up for it
Thu, 05 Jun 2014
Residual values for last year's minivans are higher than they were in 2000.
Much like the station wagon was the shuttle of Baby Boomer generation, the minivan has been the primary means of transport for Generations X and Y. Just as the boomers abandoned the Country Squire, though, those kids that were toted around in Grand Caravans and Windstars are adults, and they certainly don't want to be seen in the cars their parents drove.
Toyota GT86 engineers explored shooting brake and sedan variants, are they still in the cards?
Wed, 13 Mar 2013According to the Toyota UK blog, engineers for the automaker were so excited developing the GT86 coupe that they investigated producing a whole family of models based on the rear-wheel drive sports car. And at least one engineer - product chief Tetsuya Tada - still hopes it can happen, even if not everyone at Toyota is onboard. Tada: "Actually we tried to do this secretly but the executives found us out. They said: 'What are you doing? Will you please focus on the coupe.'"
Those mooted variants included both a four-door sedan and a shooting brake. Why? Aside from the pure excellence of a lightweight, brilliantly handling hatchback, Toyota was keenly aware of the fact that it may need to spread the cost of development out across several models. Tada says that's part of the reason why it was so easy to create the convertible. The company knew from the outset that a softtop version was in the cards, and built the machine's structure to accommodate having the roof sliced off.
Tada also made mention of the already-announced collaboration between Toyota and BMW. The engineer said that the GT86 was particularly helpful because it demonstrated just how successful a product conceived and designed by two different companies can be. While he didn't say exactly what Toyota and BMW are up to, it's clear the two are looking into a number of possibilities. It's an interesting read with a lot of
North American production of foreign marques to jump in 2014
Sun, 23 Dec 2012Wards Auto has released its North American Light Vehicle Production Forecast for 2014, and the report predicts foreign manufacturers will increase production on the continent some 3.9 percent by 2014. If accurate, that should see 123,000 additional cars, trucks and vans produced in North America, swelling the total number of units produced both by domestic and foreign manufacturers to 16.9 million light vehicles from a projected 15.6 million in 2013. Much of the increase can be attributed to the fact that Toyota intends to produce another car at its Blue Springs, MS plant as well as a new Lexus model at its Georgetown, KY facility in a year's time.
Likewise, Volkswagen intends to move production of a currently imported model to its plant in Puebla, Mexico. Daimler, Honda, Nissan and Mazda also plan to build additional models on North American soil for the first time. Around two-thirds of the new North American manufacturing will take place in Mexico, helping the country soak up a full 20 percent of the content's automotive production for the first time. You can head over to the Wards Auto site for the full report.
