This is an absolutely rust free example of the highly valued 2nd generation 4Runner SUV.  Its black on the outside, in fact its all black, including the bumpers, the mirrors and all the chrome.  Its currently wearing 20" black rhino forged alloy wheels with Nankang sport tires, but I also have the original factory alloys that are also painted black.  Its very sharp looking with its recent respray, and its as straight as an arrow with NO RUST anywhere.  Its also a 5-speed manual, which is a fantastic option for a number of reasons.  The first reason is because with the automatic, these trucks are incredible slow, but not so with the manual trans.  Its actually pretty fun to drive, even when you're driving on a paved surface.  The 4WD works perfectly, so as fun as it is to drive on pavement, its 10 times as fun off pavement.  The engine, trans and drivetrain work great, the only flaw being that this one still has the mechanical speedometer which works fine, but chatters a bit at high speed.  Its no bother, but you do hear the mechanical speedo from time to time.  I think in 1993 or 94, Toyota used an electronic speedo that made much less noise.  Anyway, this is a totally blacked out 4Runner in unbelievable shape, both physically and mechanically.  The interior is OK, but not nearly as nice as the outside.  The driver's seat is threadbare and worn, so I have it covered in authentic sheepskin.  The passenger seat is also covered in black fur, but its not the real stuff.  The seat itself is fine with no rips or tears.  The back seat is in great shape, but its got a black "Dickies" cover on it just to keep it nice and maintain the black look.  It has a Pioneer AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with an aux input, so I plug my iPhone into it and listed to Sirius satellite radio through my iPhone.  The head unit is fine, the speakers in the truck are not so great, but they work.

So I priced it at $4,995 with the black rhino alloys and the nankang tires, which I think is a bargain, or in the alternative, I'll sell the truck with the factory wheels for $3,500 cash.

There's a familiar ring to this 1966 video of GM's hydrogen ElectroVan

Thu, Dec 18 2014

"What we need is fuel cells that can run on a hydrocarbon fuel and air." It can be fun and educational to revisit the past as we look into the future. While we do have cars that plug in today, the first big batch of hydrogen powered vehicles is not yet arrived (but the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell CUV is leading the way). The idea of hydrogen as a promising future technology was also true in 1960s, when General Motors made a promotional movie for the ElectroVan. Turns out, the future then shared more than a little with the future now. As you can see in the short promotional video below for the hydrogen-powered ElectroVan, a modified 1966 GMC HandiVan, a big hurdle in the mid 1960s was the difficulty of obtaining hydrogen fuel. GM offered a possible solution at the time: "Hydrogen and oxygen are expensive and impractical fuels for a car. What we need is fuel cells that can run on a hydrocarbon fuel and air." Unlike today's hydrogen fuel cell cars, the ElectroVan used liquid hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells to get a range of between 100 and 150 miles. Not bad for the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle in the world. GM tested the ElectroVan on the GM grounds before sending it into storage and then to the company's heritage center. For another view to the past, this time with some focus on electric vehicles, take a look at a video from the 1994 Chicago Auto Show, also available below. Twenty years ago, the green vehicle hype was on the Toyota EV-50 electric car, the solar-powered Honda EVX (and a solar Honda racing car) and a hydrogen-powered Mazda Miata. The announcer's enthusiasm is contagious, but as we all know, none of these vehicles ever made it to dealerships. This content is hosted by a third party. Ford only automaker to make 2012 Buzz Rankings, Toyota most improved

Wed, 30 Jan 2013

Ford landed itself a spot among the top 10 brands in the 2012 Buzz Rankings. The annual index scores 1,100 brands in 41 categories to determine which nameplates had the most positive buzz throughout the year.
For the third year in a row, Subway took the top honors overall with a score of 40.3, and Ford was the only automaker to break into the top 25 by earning a sixth-place finish overall. The manufacturer earned a score of 32.1 points, which was enough to push it up one spot from the 2011 Buzz Rankings. Honda managed 21.2 points overall, which is still well behind 25th-place Kohl's at 26.5 points. Toyota, Volkswagen and BMW all round out the top five automakers.
The 2012 Buzz Rankings also keep track of which brands improved the most over the past year, and this year, Toyota was the manufacturer with the largest leap forward. The Japanese automaker jumped from just 14 points in 2011 to 20.5 in 2012. Chrysler, Kia, Dodge and Volkswagen all saw sizable steps forward as well. Be sure to head over to the Brand Index site for more information.

Judge halts Toyota unintended acceleration cases, triggers time for settlement negotiations

Mon, 16 Dec 2013

So far, the lawsuits brought forth against Toyota for unintended acceleration have gone both ways: the automaker was found not at fault in a 2009 California crash and liable for a 2007 crash in Oklahoma. Both cases involved a Camry and resulted in fatalities. With a big chunk of these UA cases (around 200) set to his the docket of US District Judge James V. Selna in Santa Ana, California, Bloomberg is reporting that the judge has halted the lawsuits until March after Toyota and its lawyers have had extra time to try and settle the cases.
According to the article, Toyota is looking to take care of the cases out of court with an "intensive settlement process." Having already paid out $1.6 billion in "economic loss" suits, this latest settlement process is aimed at the wrongful death and personal injury cases allegedly associated with unintended acceleration. A hearing for the settlements will be held on January 14 with conferences on the matter commencing in February. There is no word as to when lawsuits may start back up if settlements can't be agreed upon.
