Elon Musk says Model S demand in China could require new plant there
Sat, Jan 25 2014It's not exactly news when Tesla Motors chief Elon Musk talks big, but his prediction that sales of the Model S electric vehicle in China will require the California-based company to build a factory there is pretty substantial. Musk tells Bloomberg News that Tesla's sales in China could equal those in the US as soon as 2015. Could is the operative word here, though, since he backed off a tad by calling his production more "low fidelity" than firm. Still, Musk says demand will be strong enough that a factory in China could become a reality in the near future. Tesla recently set the price for the Model S in China at at about $121,000, which is about a 50-percent price premium compared to the US. And while that sounds steep, the extra cost is actually less than the doubling (relative to US) that usually happens when cars and trucks are imported in China. Looks like Musk wants to sell some cars in the People's Republic. Tesla finished strong in the US last year, moving about 6,900 of its battery-electric Model S sedans during the last three months of 2013. That made it the best-selling US plug-in vehicle during the fourth quarter. We'll be tracking when that same feat is achieved in China.
Tesla Model S scores 5 stars in Euro NCAP crash test
Wed, Nov 5 2014If you've been aching to see more Tesla Model S crash test videos, it's your lucky day. The European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) safety agency has announced that the EV scored a 5-star safety rating in a new battery of tests. And it released the video footage for you to "enjoy," which you can do below. Five stars is the highest score that Euro NCAP hands out, and this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's familiar with the way the Model S handled the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a year ago. Tesla says that its popular luxury EV scored five stars overall as well as "every NHTSA subcategory, including frontal impact, side impact, and rollover" and that, "only two other cars have earned the same recognition since 2011 (when NHTSA introduced its latest rating scheme)." Euro NCAP says that three vehicles that are comparable to the Model S are the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid,, the Lancia Thema and the Infiniti FX. You can find the details Model S results in the gallery below or in this PDF and find out why Tesla thinks it did so well on both the American and European tests – "our holistic approach to safety" – in the press release below. Model S Achieves Euro NCAP 5-Star Safety Rating AMSTERDAM, November 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- We're pleased to announce that the Tesla Model S has received a maximum-possible 5-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP). Model S is one of just a few cars to have ever achieved a 5-star safety rating from both Euro NCAP and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, Model S is the only car this year to have achieved both a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and 5 stars in every NHTSA subcategory, including frontal impact, side impact, and rollover. Only two other cars have earned the same recognition since 2011 (when NHTSA introduced its latest rating scheme). The reason so few models achieve 5-star ratings in both Europe and the U.S. is that each program places emphasis on different safety aspects in the assessment process. NHTSA emphasizes structural and restraint safety, with a deep focus on how well the vehicle can withstand and absorb the energy of an impact while protecting its occupants. It is also primarily concerned with adult occupants.
Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla charging times compared, VW's 70s hybrid tech
Fri, Mar 27 2015A video shows the difference in Tesla Model S charging speeds with different chargers. The video compares the 60- and 80-kWh versions of the car using a Tesla Supercharger, a CHAdeMo fast charger and Tesla's High Power Wall Connector (HPWC). With the Supercharger, both models charge from to 80 percent in 44 minutes. It's over an hour and a quarter for both cars with the CHAdeMo, but they're about neck and neck in terms of time. The HPWC takes the longest, with the 60-kWh car finishing long before the 85-kWh version. See the video above, and read more at Teslarati. Volkswagen had prototype hybrid technology back in the 1970s. A book called The Complete Book of Electric Vehicles by Sheldon Shacket describes the technology used in Volkswagen's Hybrid-Electric City Taxi prototype, which was based on the Type II microbus. It used the automaker's 1.6-liter air-cooled flat-four (borrowed from the Beetle) along with a Bosch DC shunt electric motor and 11 lead-acid batteries. Interestingly, the hybrid taxi prototype also featured an electric sliding door and a bulletproof bulkhead separating the driver from the passengers. Read more at Jalopnik, and at Green Car Reports. Country music star Lee Brice is going on tour fueled by biodiesel. Partnering with nonprofit environmental organization Reverb, Brice is using the biofuel to travel to college campuses. "We're hoping to offset the environmental impact of the tour by supporting clean energy projects and using buses and trucks fueled with locally produced biodiesel," says Brice, who is personally focused on natural preservation and water conservation.
