Sat, Jun 6 2015A new video from Renault touts the benefits of electric vehicles. The video covers how EVs can help improve the air we breathe and mitigate climate change. It looks into the future at how the air of various metropolitan areas would improve with the adoption of electric cars. It focuses on how EVs help reduce not just CO2 emissions that put the climate in jeopardy, but gases and particulate matter that directly affect the human health. A study in Rome shows that if 10 to 20 percent of the vehicles were electric, particulate pollutants that cause respiratory and heart diseases would decrease by 30 percent, with nitrogen dioxide decreasing 45 percent. Ohio State University has won Year One of EcoCar 3. Winning the Year One trophy in the competition to create eco-friendly technology and incorporate it into a Chevrolet Camaro, the team defends its title from EcoCar 2 and wins $10,000 in prize money. "This year really lays the foundation vehicle development, which is critical step in the process for future success," says Ohio State University Engineering Manager M.J. Yatsko. "We have already begun vehicle dynamic analysis for next year and are excited to share some of our innovative features we plan to integrate into our vehicle." Advanced Microgrid Solutions will use up to 500 megawatt-hours of Tesla batteries for grid-based energy storage. It will install the Tesla Powerpack systems for storage in commercial and industrial facilities to help balance the grid load. It offers greater reliability for the grid, and cost saving for customers. Tesla-Based Rinspeed XchangE Concept Offers A Vision For The Future Of Autonomous Driving
Wed, Feb 19 2014It has become an annual tradition for Swiss automaker Rinspeed to release details of its latest inventive concept just ahead of the Geneva Motor Show. Not your customary custom shop, Rinspeed considers themselves an "automotive think tank and mobility lab." Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that this year's concept pairs two emerging automotive industry trends: electric vehicles and autonomous driving technology. From the outside, the Rinspeed XchangeE looks much like the all-electric Tesla Model S upon which it is based, save for a modified front fascia, clear plexiglass roof and bright green paint job. Inside, however, is where things get interesting. View 6 Photos "Passengers will be able to assume virtually any seating or resting position when traveling in a fully autonomous vehicle in the future, which will require a completely new operating and display concept," says the automaker in a statement. The plush "business-class" interior of the XchangE is reconfigurable, offering up to twenty possible seating positions to passengers. Additional flexibility is provided by a "bionic" steering column, featuring a TRW wheel that can slide to the center of the vehicle when not in use by the driver. With the XchangE, Rinspeed has rethought safety and security for the autonomous age as well. An RFID access control system ensures that only approved drivers will be able to command the vehicle. The steering wheel's hands-on recognition system will let the car know when the driver has returned to the helm. All data transfer between car and cloud is handled by a secure LTE network connection. In-car infotainment runs on HTML 5, which Rinspeed claims will provide "comprehensive protection against hacker attacks." The only question that remains is what to do on those long road trips, now that you're no longer hunched over a steering wheel the entire time. Forget flip-down or seat-back DVD players. The Rinspeed XchangE features a gesture-controlled 32-inch 4K television. "You can read, listen to music, surf the web, play games and watch movies in brilliant picture and sound quality," says the automaker. Apple car could arrive by 2020
Fri, Feb 20 2015The possibility of Apple entering the auto business has been a scorching hot topic lately. The tech giant is reportedly poaching employees from both Tesla and battery maker A123 Systems, and there's even a lawsuit over the dispute in the latter case. The latest rumor adding even more gas to this growing conflagration of rumors is that the company is targeting 2020 for a possible start of production for its car. Anonymous "people with knowledge of the matter" tell Bloomberg this is the case and say there are about 200 employees reportedly working on the project. Apple reportedly wants to enter the car market because the company is looking for new business sectors. The development began in earnest in the past few months with all of the new hires. The automotive project is rumored to be called Project Titan within the tech business, and its styling may resemble a minivan, at least at this stage. While Apple has no car manufacturing facilities of its own, meetings with Magna Steyr indicate the company could consider a contract partner to actually assemble the vehicle. Of course everything about this project is entirely a rumor at this point, and Apple isn't confirming anything. All signs so far suggest the business is developing an electric car, and the poached workers from A123 Systems indicate the company is researching battery technology. Although, if Apple really wants to debut the vehicle in five years, there are still a multitude of problems to solve, including setting up a sales and service infrastructure.
