Jaguar I-Pace sets Laguna Seca record, virtually matches Tesla Model S P100D

Fri, Aug 24 2018

Jaguar has announced that the I-Pace crossover has set the Laguna Seca lap record for production electric vehicles. With racing driver Randy Pobst behind the wheel, the I-Pace HSE completed a lap in 1 minute and 48.18 seconds. Jaguar was adamant to stress that the record-setting vehicle was bone stock with "no modifications whatsoever." As Jalopnik reports, a bit of a dispute arose about the lap time, as a Tesla Model S P100D is said to have completed a lap in 1 minute, 47.62 seconds. However, the Tesla in question had received brake upgrades, unlike the factory specification Jaguar. The I-Pace's two electric motors are good for a combined 400 horsepower and 513 pound-feet, propelling the SUV to 62 mph in just 4.8 seconds. Jaguar has also released video footage from the Laguna Seca run, above. Look for the slide at the 30-second mark! Pobst must have been enjoying himself, as you can hear him guffawing after the famous Corkscrew section. While this record was all about the prowess of a production EV, there will be a racing series featuring the I-Pace, as the I-Pace eTrophy begins in the fifth season of ABB FIA Formula E. Tesla attempting LA-NY Guinness record using Superchargers

Thu, Jan 30 2014

Right now, two Tesla Model S EVs are crossing the US from Los Angeles to New York, hoping to be a big deal. Sure, a father-daughter team already claim they've made the cross-country drive, but this time, it's an official Tesla event and the company has its eyes on a Guinness World Record prize. The drivers left the Tesla design studio in Hawthorne, Los Angeles at midnight last night, and the plan is to use the company's just-completed Supercharger network to achieve the "lowest charge time for an electric vehicle traveling across the United States." We didn't know that was a category, either. Tesla now has over 70 Supercharger stations in the US and all of them are free-to-use for Model S drivers, which is why you can follow along on this record attempt via Twitter using the #DriveFree tag. As of early this morning, the teams made it to the Supercharger station in Kingman, AZ and posted this sunrise pic. We wish them safe travels – they will soon reach the snowy northern parts of the country since the current Supercharger route will take them through the upper Midwest on the way to the East Coast.

Tesla Model S getting minor updates for Summer 2014

Fri, Aug 8 2014

New colors, a free trunk shelf and, uh, an ionizer. Not mind-blowing stuff, but they are some of the goodies available soon to buyers of the Tesla Model S battery-electric sedan. So say the fine folks at Teslarati. The California-based automaker is offering an Alcantara headliner upgrade for a tidy $1,500 while widening its choice of colors to include a darker metallic grey. Beyond that, there's the case of the trunk "parcel shelf," which was once a $250 add-on but may become standard equipment. Tesla buyers may also have the option of getting an ionizer, which, for those of us that are scientifically challenged, is a feature in which positive and negative ions are emitted to eliminate bacteria from the vehicle. You will be tested on this later. Tesla is adding these features just as it's coming off yet another record quarter for both sales and production. For the three months ended June 30, Tesla delivered 7,579 vehicles while building a record 8,763 cars. Tesla says it expects to deliver 35,000 vehicles in all of 2014, Tesla said late last month, which means the company's quarterly delivery rate should hit about 10,000 by year-end and then 25,000 by the end of 2015. That means a whole lot of positive and negative electrons. And free trunk shelves.
