Elon Musk says Apple offering $250,000 signing bonus to poach Tesla employees
Sun, Feb 8 2015The talent pool in Silicon Valley is filled with sharks. Google, Apple, Oracle, eBay, Amazon, Nvidia, Adobe, HP and Electronic Arts all draw from the finite workforce of northern California, so unsurprisingly, competition for new hires is extremely fierce. Elon Musk, founder of Tesla Motors, offers proof of that, claiming that Silicon Valley stalwart Apple has offered his employees whopping $250,000 signing bonuses and 60-percent pay increases. But don't worry, Tesla is just as guilty of poaching Apple's employees. Bloomberg has the interesting story that focuses not so much on the inter-hiring between the two companies, but on their similarities, which includes drawing parallels between their mercurial – some may say iconoclastic – founders. It all makes for fascinating reading, giving insight into the games played between top employers in one of the country's most competitive job markets. Head over and have a look. Related Video:
Musk teases hyperloop test track for Texas, mulls pod races
Fri, Jan 16 2015In what was seen as an attempt to persuade legislators to allow Tesla to operate stores in Texas, Elon Musk visited Austin to do some political horse trading. We don't yet know how he fared, but it looks like Texas is getting a hyperloop test track out of the deal. And, it seems, the electric car mogul is mulling the creation of a pod racer competition, similar to the Formula SAE series, to go with it. As we've mentioned before, the hyperloop is a high-speed, train-in-a-tube transportation system – think 4,000 miles per hour. Musk has released a 57-page document outlining how it might work. The billionaire entrepreneur, as is his wont, took to Twitter to make the announcement. We note that he does use the qualifier "probably" in his statement, which leads us to believe he is expecting something in return for the unique investment. In lieu of an official press release, we leave you with his Tweetings outlining his proposals: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Tesla Model S proves troublesome for Consumer Reports
Tue, 12 Aug 2014The Tesla Model S has turned into the breakthrough model that electric cars needed. Instead of looking like a futuristic jellybean whizzing by, the Tesla would still be incredibly attractive with a V8 stuffed under the hood. But beyond its appealing styling, the luxury sedan offers a realistic driving range, impressive performance and oft-praised driving dynamics. It's everything many drivers are looking for. However, as more long-term reviews come out, it's becoming clear that living with one of these wonder cars isn't without its fair share of problems.
A few weeks ago, Edmunds published its 17-month ownership experience with a Model S. It praised the experience being behind the wheel of the luxury sedan, at least when it was possible. Edmunds reported that it had to make seven unscheduled trips to the service bay and even left a writer by the side of the road once. The biggest issues included replacing the drive unit three times, needing a new main battery and numerous resets of the center screen.
Consumer Reports just wrote about its own driving impressions after 15,743 miles, and its experience with the Model S has hardly been a walk in the park, though not nearly as bad as Edmunds' rough time. The infotainment screen needed a hard reset once after blinking out, and one unscheduled service left the sedan in the shop for two days. There have been other, smaller issues too. In Tesla's favor, the repairs were done under warranty.
