    Hi-Performance 1986 Suzuki Samurai 4x4 Rat Rod

    CONDITION

This was a perfectly fine working Suzuki Samurai when I got it in 2012, but me being the tinkerer I am I had to make it bad ass. It had around 200,000 miles on it before I began completely overhauling it. I chose to focus on performance and roll with some of the rugged patina that had developed with black diamond plate for its appearance. It has all been sanded and clear coated in areas that needed it. As to the performance, this thing is fast. Not only is it capable of doing burnouts, it puts any Wrangler to shame on the trail. Mechanically everything is sound. There are no oil leaks. It starts right up every time. Pretty much all engine mechanical is new. Have gotten it up to 95 on the high way with 30's so it can be a highway driver. Interior has been fully re-done. Needless to say this is an immaculate piece of rugged 80's hardware that has been modernized to take you anywhere you want to go, is the most fun automobile you will ever drive, and will make people jealous.

Hi-Performance: 100HP 1.3L Engine w/Weber Carb

This was bought from Sammy Pro and professionally installed around May of 2013. It is their top tier configuration; SAMMY PRO LEVEL III. It's already been re-valved and I've worked out all the other systematic problems caused by inserting a hi-performance engine into a 30 year old vehicle: new distributor, fuel pump, and alternator. It's probably got about 2,500 miles on it since I put in. I've gotten my Sammy rolling on 30's up to 95 mph...not that there is ever a reason to drive a Samurai that fast though.

New Transmission and Clutch

When I had the engine installed I thought...why not put in a new transmission and clutch? So I did. Shifting is crisp.

Aggressive Exhaust System

Added Pacesetter Headers and widened the exhaust. Purrs like a kitten. For those in DEQ or Smog areas I've added a catalytic converter as well. And I have been able to get it passed before.

Suspension

  • 2" SPOA Lift
  •
  • Ranchero Springs
  •
  • Old Man Emu steering stabilizer
  •

Rugged Yet Modern Interior

  • Corbeau Black Sport Seats + installed with proper brackets.
  •
  • Modernized Sound System - Pioneer CD, Stainless Steel Audio Holder, speakers added to rear, updated speakers in front.
  •
  • Black Diamond Plate Throughout
  •
  • Stainless Steel Shifter Knob
  •

  •
  • Tuffy Center Security Console
  •
  • Herculined in rear
  •

Suzuki Alto goes back to basics in Japan

Wed, Dec 24 2014

Believe it or not, you're looking at a brand new car. Not an old model from the '80s that's still being manufactured in some far-flung corner of the world, not a rehash of old technologies, but an all-new model introduced in Japan for the Japanese domestic market. Looking like a cross between a Jimny and a VW Up!, the new Suzuki Alto is a different machine entirely from the somewhat ungainly but comparatively modern model of the same name manufactured in India by Maruti Suzuki for markets around the world. This is the JDM version, built to Kei car specifications, and shares little more than its badges with the Indian model. Based on a supposedly all-new platform, the new Alto boasts what Suzuki claims is the best fuel economy of any non-hybrid in Japan. That's partially because of its spritely curb weight, down by 132 pounds over the model it replaces to tip the scales at just 1,345 pounds. That's over 600 pounds lighter than a Smart Fortwo. The whole thing rides on a tiny 97-inch wheelbase, of which 80 inches are taken up by the passenger compartment. Power comes from a 660cc three-cylinder engine mated to either a five-speed automated manual or CVT in a number of configurations that ought to help Suzuki sell even more of these than the 4.8 million Altos it's sold in Japan alone since its introduction 35 years ago. Are orphan cars better deals?

Wed, Dec 30 2015

Most folks don't know a Saturn Aura from an Oldsmobile Aurora. Those of you who are immersed in the labyrinth of automobilia know that both cars were testaments to the mediocrity that was pre-bankruptcy General Motors, and that both brands are now long gone. But everybody else? Not so much. By the same token, there are some excellent cars and trucks that don't raise an eyebrow simply because they were sold under brands that are no longer being marketed. Orphan brands no longer get any marketing love, and because of that they can be alarmingly cheap. Case in point, take a look at how a 2010 Saturn Outlook compares with its siblings, the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. According to the Manheim Market Report, the Saturn will sell at a wholesale auto auction for around $3,500 less than the comparably equipped Buick or GMC. Part of the reason for this price gap is that most large independent dealerships, such as Carmax, make it a point to avoid buying cars with orphaned badges. Right now if you go to Carmax's site, you'll find that there are more models from Toyota's Scion sub-brand than Mercury, Saab, Pontiac, Hummer, and Saturn combined. This despite the fact that these brands collectively sold in the millions over the last ten years while Scion has rarely been able to realize a six-figure annual sales figure for most of its history. That is the brutal truth of today's car market. When the chips are down, used-car shoppers are nearly as conservative as their new-car-buying counterparts. Unfamiliarity breeds contempt. Contempt leads to fear. Fear leads to anger, and pretty soon you wind up with an older, beat-up Mazda MX-5 in your driveway instead of looking up a newer Pontiac Solstice or Saturn Sky. There are tons of other reasons why orphan cars have trouble selling in today's market. Worries about the cost of repair and the availability of parts hang over the industry's lost toys like a cloud of dust over Pigpen. Yet any common diagnostic repair database, such as Alldata, will have a complete framework for your car's repair and maintenance, and everyone from junkyards to auto parts stores to eBay and Amazon stock tens of thousands of parts. This makes some orphan cars mindblowingly awesome deals if you're willing to shop in the bargain bins of the used-car market. Consider a Suzuki Kizashi with a manual transmission. No, really.

Toyota, Honda, Nissan and more collaborating to increase fuel efficiency

Sun, 25 May 2014

Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Daihatsu have announced an alliance that will see a push to improve fuel economy from both gas-powered and diesel-powered engines by as much as 30 percent before the end of the decade.
The newly assembled Research Association of Automotive Internal Combustion Engines put the roughly $20-million project together, with the Japanese government committing to half the cost while the eight manufacturers will chip in the rest.
According to Automotive News, the automakers will team up and share basic research on internal-combustion engines in a bid to cut costs. Eventually, the results of the research will find its way into a production vehicle, although it's unclear just when we'll see the fruits of this partnership on the road.
