Subaru teases all-new Legacy ahead of Chicago debut
Thu, 30 Jan 2014Following the debut of the Legacy Concept at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, it appears Subaru is now ready to show us the real thing. The Japanese automaker has just confirmed that a production-spec Legacy sedan will officially bow at next week's Chicago Auto Show.
All we have to work with right now is the teaser image you see above, as well as some general overview-type stuff from Subaru in regards to its new model. According to the company's press blast, the next Legacy "is a midsize sports sedan which offers enhanced driveability and functionality while achieving a design required for a flagship model with a quality feel." In other words, it's a brand-new Legacy.
The Legacy Concept was a decidedly attractive thing, combining coupe-like styling elements and a new design that sort of reminds us of a Buick Regal GS. Of course, Subaru has a storied history of creating excellent-looking concept cars, only to later unveil very watered-down production versions, so we fully expect its new midsize sedan to be quite a bit more boring than the show car we saw in LA. Let's hope we're wrong.
Subaru plans to electrify entire range by the middle of the 2030s
Mon, Jan 20 2020Nipping infinite rumors in the bud, Subaru confirmed the Outback, the Forester, the BRZ, the WRX STI, and every other car it makes will go utilize some form of electrified powertain or disappear by the middle of the 2030s. The Japanese automaker announced it plans to kick exclusively gasoline-powered cars out of its global portfolio in about 15 years' time. The announcement comes in the wake of ever-stricter emissions regulations around the globe, notably in China and in the European Union. The firm isn't going to turn the tap off overnight, though. Toyota owns an 8.7% stake in Subaru, and the two partners are jointly developing a pair of electric cars due out during the 2020s. Others will inevitably follow. By 2030, hybrid and electric models will represent at least 40% of Subaru's annual global output. In the meantime, Subaru is funneling an immense amount of money into adapting Toyota's hybrid technology to its vehicles. The gasoline-electric variant of the Crosstrek introduced in 2018 a product of this collaboration. Executives outlined plans to release a "strong hybrid" again built with Toyota parts, though they stopped short of providing more details. They also stressed their goal isn't to achieve mere badge-engineering. "Although we're using Toyota technology, we want to make hybrids that are distinctly Subaru. It's not only about reducing CO2 emissions. We need to further improve vehicle safety and the performance of ourĀ all-wheel drive," affirmed Tetsuo Onuki, Subaru's chief technology officer, during a briefing Reuters attended. His comments suggest all-wheel drive will continue to define the members of Subaru's range in the electric-only era. The configuration has been one of the brand's strongest selling points for decades, and it helped it grow from a niche brand peddling obscure cars to a major mainstream automaker in the United States, so giving it up would be marketing suicide. The horizontally-opposed engine is Subaru's second signature, it's what the C-shaped daytime running lights seen on its cars are inspired by, but Onuki confirmed it will no longer be the only way Subarus are motivated.
1992 Subaru Libero | eBay Find of the Day
Tue, May 21 2019The annals of history are filled with some pretty strange vans. Here in the U.S., we've seen such oddities as the Stout Scarab and, more recently, the mid-engine, supercharged, all-wheel-drive Toyota Previa. In other parts of the world, things have gotten even more interesting. Take this Subaru Libero for instance. A 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine means it isn't a Kei car, despite the van's diminutive dimensions. That engine is mounted at the rear, and it sends 73 horsepower to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. This particular Libero is far from perfect, but it shows just 14,000 miles on the odometer and you're not likely to see many others like it here in the States. The high roof with its trio of glass panels keep things light and airy inside, and its massive rear hatch makes all that space inside extremely accessible. Sure, it's not a camper, which means its owner won't be living that hashtag-vanlife. But it offers a lot of space for its size, so it might be the perfect promotional vehicle for a local delivery business or the like. At the very least, this little Subaru Libero would definitely strike up lots of interesting conversation at your local Saturday-morning hangout, and that's what's really important, right? It's currently for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $9,900 and located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
