SELLER REMARKS

Despite what you see on TV and in movies, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is still the ultimate display of wealth. Not "just won the lottery" wealth, not "NBA rookie" wealth, but the kind of old-school money that extends back generations. No other car quite delivers the heavy-duty wallet slap that this 1974 Silver Shadow does and you don't have to worry, because we won't tell anyone just how affordable it really is.

Rolls-Royce would have painted your Shadow any color you wanted, but they really preferred subtlety to flash, and this handsome silver Silver Shadow is just the way they liked it. Repainted once just six months ago, it has a brilliant gloss that looks expensive and doesn't hide any bodywork or accident repairs. And as you'd expect from the world's finest automaker, the gaps are tight, the sheetmetal simply FEELS substantial, and the finish work is exemplary. It's not perfect, not after 40 years, but this is still a very impressive motorcar. Nobody else does chrome as well as the British, either, with just the right amount to imply wealth and sophistication without going overboard, so you get a tidy strip along the sides of the body, simple bumpers, and, of course, that towering Rolls-Royce grille shell that is perhaps the most definitive in all of motoring history. No goofy padded roof, no dated 1970s colors, and no questionable repairs make this car an A-list celebrity, even today.

The bright red interior is perhaps a little flashy, but you have to remember that red Connolly leather was prized by motoring enthusiasts as far back as the 1910s. Aside from some light wear on the driver's seat and walnut trim, the interior is in exemplary condition for its age and showcases genuine hand craftsmanship and the finest natural materials in the world. The wool carpets are deeper and plusher than the stuff in your living room and everything that looks like wood really IS wood, all cut from the same tree to ensure uniformity of color and grain. Simple Smiths instruments seem too plain for the car, but their understated functionality is ideal for the no-nonsense Roller. Everything was standard, too, including electric windows and locks, A/C, cruise control, and power seats, which for 1974 was quite a list of features. The original AM/FM radio remains in the dash and is augmented by a hidden Pioneer AM/FM/Sirius head unit, but otherwise it is factory-original and splendidly maintained. Even the trunk is outfitted with plush, expensive carpets that are bound in leather, more proof that good taste knows no boundaries.

The massive "six-and-three-quarter" liter V8 engine was rebuilt less than 2500 miles ago by a noted British car specialist and runs superbly. That can't have been an inexpensive task given the complexity of the machinery, but it does mean that you can enjoy this car without worries. As the saying goes, an inexpensive Rolls-Royce is the most expensive car you can own, so keeping this one in top condition will cost you far less than bringing a broken one back from the dead. In truth, these are truly reliable machines in their own right and the brawny V8 moves the big sedan without apparent effort. The GM-sourced TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is, of course, bulletproof and the fully independent suspension with disc brakes all around gives this 5500-pound luxury sedan rather agile handling. Most importantly, the brakes were converted to DOT3 brake fluid, so no worries about mineral oil replacement in the future, and the underside looks as though it's spent its life someplace warm. Uniroyal whitewall radials have been fitted and the understated hubcaps are the smart choice.

Look like a millionaire for pennies on the dollar, but you may also find that this is a fun car that's quite enjoyable to own if you love to drive. Call today!

BMW bringing 9 Series concept to Beijing

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

It appears that BMW is ready to take another step upmarket with a new concept flagship luxury sedan at the Beijing Motor Show at the end of April. The showcar is said to preview the company's rumored 9 Series, a sedan that would be positioned against top trims of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, like the rumored S600 Maybach.
According to Automotive News Europe, the concept sedan wears styling language adapted from the curvaceous BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe (pictured above) shown at the 2013 Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance in May. It rides on BMW's new, modular platform - codenamed G11 - for the company's largest cars, an architecture also expected to be shared with the next 7 Series and future Rolls-Royce vehicles. It's rumored to bring the weight of the 7 closer to the 5 Series, which would be several hundred pounds lighter when comparing the base models of both current vehicles. We spotted the next-gen 7 Series testing over a year ago, and both it and the 9 Series are expected to go on sale in 2016.
Unfortunately, at the moment there is no official information about the concept. "We don't have any official news yet on anything in Beijing," Julian Arguelles, BMW USA spokesperson, tells Autoblog. However, it's heartening to think that BMW might be adapting the gorgeous shape of the Gran Lusso for production.

Rolls-Royce to reach 4,000 units this year

Tue, 30 Sep 2014

Rolls-Royce is, by nature, an exclusive auto marque, but it has been steadily increasing its sales to the point that it could be looking at 4,000 units by the end of this year, setting a new record for the German-owned British automaker.
You don't even need to go back a decade to find Rolls-Royce sales hovering around the 1,000-unit mark. But that was when Goodwood only offered the Phantom saloon. The subsequent addition of the Phantom DHC and Phantom Coupe helped expand its portfolio, enlarged even further by the addition of the Ghost in 2010, by which time total sales were reaching 3,000 units.
The Spirit of Ecstasy marque has been hovering around the 3,500 mark ever since, but with the Wraith now in the mix and its reach extending into growing markets around the world, Autocar reports that global sales could top 4,000 units this year. (Of course that pales in comparison to one-time sister brand Bentley, which topped 10,000 deliveries last year, but Rolls-Royce typically competes at a higher price bracket.)

Giles Taylor succeeds Ian Cameron as head of Rolls-Royce design

Thu, 28 Jun 2012

Back in the day, a Rolls-Royce looked pretty much the same as a Bentley, but with a different grille. Once BMW took over Rolls-Royce, however, it was faced with the challenge of visually separating itself from its former sister brand. And most would agree that it did so pretty well. But its cars have looked pretty much the same ever since. What Rolls-Royce needs, then, is a bit of a design shake-up. And that's just what this latest appointment could bring.
After a baker's dozen years as design director at Rolls-Royce (and twenty years designing for the BMW Group altogether), Ian Cameron is retiring from his post. In his place, Rolls-Royce has named Giles Taylor as its new director of design. In his new capacity, Taylor will report directly to BMW Group chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk, and be responsible for all design matters related to the Rolls-Royce brand and its products.
Taylor was promoted to the role from his previous position as head of exterior design for the marque, a position he's held for barely more than a year. We'll be eagerly watching to see what the veteran British car designer has in store for the future of Rolls-Royce. In the meantime you can read the full announcement below.
