2014 Ram 1500 Diesel
Thu, 26 Sep 2013Remember when Mahindra & Mahindra was close to offering a compact diesel pickup here? A million voices from the truck-and-bed-loving tribes of the Internet cried out at once in anticipation, only to be silenced in disappointment when it didn't happen. And this was for a jitney with a bed that didn't exactly look robust in its press photos. The message these fans had was clear: light-duty truck + a diesel engine = a prayer answered for a significant contingent of truck buyers.
Ram tells us a fullsize diesel half-ton has been the number-one demand from customers, and it will be the first manufacturer to grand the wish when the 2014 Ram 1500 goes on sale early next year - "late availability" in Q1 of 2014 is the official word - with a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder turbodiesel provided by VM Motori. If you're wondering about the engine source, VM Motori has been a Chrysler supplier since 1992. DaimlerChrysler bought VM Motori in 2000, and after a few ownership-stake changes since then, it is presently a 50-50 joint venture between General Motors and Fiat. That will change shortly, however, with Fiat recently announcing it will buy GM's share and take full control of the company.

United States drivers buying fewer Mexican-made cars
Tue, May 10 2016Crossovers and pickup trucks are not only growing in market share, they're also more profitable than cars. A crossover on the same platform as a sedan retails for thousands more, despite similar components. It's one of the reasons we've seen automakers rapidly shifting production of their sedans and hatchbacks to Mexico, where cheap labor preserves the thin profit margins on these inexpensive vehicles. But as the market continues to shift in the United States, Mexico is getting burned by its lack of product diversity. The country's auto exports, which are heavy on cars, suffered a 16-percent drop last month, Automotive News reports. In total, year-over-year exports fell from 233,515 to 197,020 last month, while year-to-date exports are down by 7.4 percent, from 922,029 to 854,118. The number one culprit? America – which usually accounts for 75 percent of Mexico's exports – and its appetite for crossovers and pickup trucks bolstered by cheap gas prices. While Mexico does build some light truck models – AN specifically calls out the Ram 2500, Honda HR-V, GMC Sierra, and Toyota Tacoma as export leaders – the vast majority of vehicles rolling out of its factories are sedans and hatchbacks. In fact, the three biggest drops in Mexican exports came from companies whose south of the border factories only build cars – Ford (Fusion/Lincoln MKZ and Fiesta), Mazda (Mazda3), and Volkswagen (Golf and Jetta). Mexican Automotive Industry Association President Eduardo Solis told AN the export shortfall will likely be sorted out sooner rather than later, thanks to a pair of new factories – a Kia car factory and an Audi SUV plant – that are coming online by year's end. The two facilities will add around 100,000 vehicles to the country's export totals, which Solis said should leave the industry on the verge of breaking another export record in 2016. But how sustainable will these record-breaking years be? Slapping an "Hecho en Mexico" sticker on a new German SUV won't be enough to change the fact that Mexico's product mix is tilted too heavily towards body styles that are not growing in volume. Mexico's record-breaking export years probably aren't at an end, but we'd argue they're certainly under threat. Ram partners with Wolverine on pickup-truck-themed boots
Tue, Aug 31 2021Let's say you recently acquired a Ram 1500, and you really like it. But what if you like it so much that you need to show off the brand even when you're away from the truck? Well, Ram partnered with boot manufacturer Wolverine on a new line of truck-themed boots with styles for all occasions. The end results are actually pretty sharp. There are three "trim levels" based on Ram 1500 trims. The base is the Tradesman, which comes in either brown or very light gray. They're traditional-looking work boots with subtle Ram branding on the tongue and on the sides toward the rears of the boots. Next up are the Rebel boots that, like the sporty, off-road-themed truck, are available with bold graphics and bright red accents depending on the design. They're much more in-your-face. Finally, there's the Limited, which is more of a dressy boot. It comes only in all black and is rather classy looking with modest branding. The Tradesman boots start at $229, and the Rebel boots are only a tad pricier at $239. Unsurprisingly, the Limited is the most expensive, coming in at $400. Ram and Wolverine will even offer Ram-branded socks with three pairs for $25. You can pre-order any of the items at this link. For each item you pre-order, the companies will donate $10 to an organization called SkillsUSA, which supports programs that help youth develop trade skills. The Ram and Wolverine products will also eventually be available this October at Boot Barn stores in California and Texas and on Amazon. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party.
