Chrysler recalls AWD 300, Charger, Ram 1500 over ZF transmission

Tue, 24 Dec 2013

What do the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Ram 1500 all have in common? Yes, they're all Chrysler products, and two of them are based on the same platform. And we're sure you could find more similarities between them all, but the common trait we're looking at here is that, while they all come standard in rear-drive form, they're also available with all-wheel drive. And it's the transmission in those models that's the subject of the latest recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The output shaft on the eight-speed automatic transmission supplied by ZF to Chrysler for the AWD versions of the 300, Charger and Ram 1500 is apparently prone to fracture. That in the end could leave the vehicle without power and could, according to the NHTSA investigation, increase the chance of a crash. The vehicle could also roll away if even if left in Park without the handbrake applied.
That's why Chrysler is calling in 4,194 examples of those three models from the 2013 model year. Dealers will be responsible for inspecting the transmissions and, where necessary, replace the entire unit. See the full recall notice below for all the details.

2021 Ram 2500 Power Wagon 75th Anniversary Edition celebrates the military-derived original

Tue, Nov 10 2020

The Ram Power Wagon has made a name for itself in this century as the ultimate heavy-duty off-road pickup truck. But the name has a much longer history than that. The first Power Wagon went on sale in 1945, and was based on large military trucks built by Dodge during World War II. That's 75 years ago this year, hence the reason for the 2021 Ram 2500 Power Wagon 75th Anniversary Edition you see here. Squeaking in just in time for the civilian truck's anniversary, this special edition Power Wagon gets some visual tweaks and is loaded up with various features. On the outside you'll find standard premium LED headlights with black trim that matches the black decals and rock rails. The unique grille gets a gunmetal Ram badge and the rear doors have black 75th anniversary badges. Beadlock-capable wheels with the usual 33-inch tires round out the exterior styling. Inside, the most prominent change is the addition of brown leather seats with 75th anniversary logos in the seat backs. Dash and door trims feature gloss black plastic and brushed aluminum. The 12-inch infotainment screen is fitted and features the new-for-2021 off-road pages that display ride height, pitch and roll, and auxiliary gauges. The infotainment system is also coupled to a 750-watt, 17-speaker sound system. The special edition Power Wagons will reach dealers by the end of the year. Pricing starts at $66,945 with destination. 2021 Ram 1500 pickup earns IIHS Top Safety Pick award with updated safety equipment

Fri, Dec 11 2020

Thanks to changes in option-package content, the 2021 Ram 1500 crew cab pickup achieves a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For 2021, the Ram adds Pedestrian Protection as part of the optional Advanced Safety Group, which allows the forward collision prevention system to detect people walking in front of the vehicle. Pedestrian collision mitigation is one of the requirements for earning an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating. In IIHS testing, the Ram's pedestrian-protection system avoided hitting the pedestrian dummy or braked enough to moderate the impact in all tests save for one where the vehicle is traveling 37 mph and the pedestrian is walking in the same direction. Still, the overall results of the vehicle-to-pedestrian tests and the vehicle-to-vehicle collision avoidance tests, where the Ram avoided crashes at 12 and 25 mph, were deemed "Acceptable" and "Superior" respectively. The Ram also achieved a top score of "Good" in the agency's various crash tests. The final hurdle to achieving an IIHS award is headlight performance. For the Top Safety Pick+ level, all available headlights must score Acceptable or Good, and for the one-rung-down Top Safety Pick, at least one available headlight option must score Acceptable or Good. The Ram 1500's SmartBeam curve-adaptive LED headlamps were the only ones to make the grade, which landed the Ram at the Top Safety Pick level. The award applies only to the 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited optioned with the Advanced Safety Group and SmartBeam headlamps. Based on IIHS testing so far, the Ram is the first full-size pickup to achieve a Top Safety Pick award for this year. Related Video:
