Porsche responds to PETA after tiger cub displays at Macan dealership events
Tue, 13 May 2014Porsche has found itself in the good graces of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which is pretty odd considering it's the only brand we know of that offers leather-lined vents. The activist group is praising the sports car manufacturer's handling of reports that some of its dealerships were set to feature tigers or tiger cubs at the local launch events for the Macan. Apparently, "macan" is the Malay word for tiger, which explains the connection between a highly touted crossover and a jungle cat.
A Tampa, FL dealership already displayed some three-week-old cubs, with PETA saying tigers for display should be at least eight to 12 weeks old. Even then, the group argues that the animals can suffer due to stress, malnourishment, neglect and a lack of veterinary care. The group brings up legal concerns, as well, arguing that if one of the cubs bit a customer, the dealership could be held liable (we're no big cat experts, but it seems unlikely a three-week-old cub could do that much damage).
Porsche's PR department quickly reacted to PETA's claims, with Vice President of Marketing Andre Oosthuizen, telling the group that Porsche is concerned about the "welfare of any animal, large or small, wild or domesticated." Oosthuizen's statements were reported in an official PETA blog.
Vintage-ish Porsche 911 buying guide
Tue, Jul 21 2015Harry Metcalfe is always great at showing viewers the intricate details of the vehicles in his collection as part of the Harry's Garage series. This time he's helping out future buyers by explaining what to look for when purchasing a classic and slightly more modern Porsche 911. His examples for this lesson are two absolute beauties that are about to cross the block from Silverstone Auctions in the UK: a 1972 2.4 S and a 1991 964-chassis RS Clubsport. The '72 in creamy white here epitomizes the look of early 911s. The coupe is handsome, purposeful, and fairly compact by modern standards. According to Metcalfe, when looking at one, don't worry about a wobbly gearshift. Apparently, they're all like that, even ones as well cared for as this example. As with any used car purchase, he recommends trying to get as many service records as you can. It's just good to know as much about the vehicle's life as possible before throwing down any cash. Where the '72 911 shows the more gentlemanly side of the brand, the '91 RS Clubsport is Porsche proving the company's performance credentials. Metcalfe slightly dings the switch to an aftermarket air filter here, but overall it's hard to find a major fault. These cars were essentially road-going racers in this trim. The engineers in Zuffenhausen chopped out as much weight as possible and then fitted Recaro racing buckets and a roll cage. This thing was meant clock as many laps around the 'Ring as the driver could stand.
Next-gen Porsche Panamera snapped running in E-Hybrid spec
Tue, May 12 2015The Porsche Panamera first debuted back in 2009 and underwent a facelift in 2013. That means the all-new, next-generation Panamera should be arriving in time for the 2017 model year, and here were have our first look at its plug-in hybrid variant. Following the last prototype spotted undergoing cold-weather testing in Sweden, this new Panamera test mule spotted in southern Europe appears to be running the E-Hybrid powertrain setup judging, at least, by the presence of a second filler cap hiding what's likely an charging port on the left side rear fender. We'll just have to sit tight, however, to find out whether it will be packing an evolution of the existing powertrain or something entirely new. Though the prototype may look largely undisguised, those head- and taillight graphics look like stickers to throw us off the scent, and these do not appear to be production-ready body panels. Expect the finished product to look far more polished when it arrives sometime in the middle of next year, with the hybrid version to follow sometime thereafter.
