Recharge Wrap-up: Big Oil fails at renewable fuel, scientists study air with EVs, plug-in Panamera sales

Big Oil companies help keep renewable fuels out of your tank, a new report shows. No surprise there, right? The Renewable Fuels Association published a report card grading the country's largest retail gasoline chains on fuel offerings like E85 and E15. The report gave failing grades, with less than one percent of stations offering E15 or E85, to "Big Five" companies Exxon, BP, ConocoPhillips, Chevron and Shell, among other oil company and convenience/grocery store brands. The only major oil companies that didn't get an "F" were Valero (D), Cenex (B), and Marathon (A-). The eight companies that scored an A+ had at least 25 percent of their stations offering E85 or E15. Beginning July 4, University of Leicester researchers began driving electric vehicles kitted out with special sensors to monitor air quality throughout the city (similar to how California does it). Now their emissions-free daily driving duties double as data collection for their studies. "By monitoring air quality as a seamless part of our daily transport system, we are providing a cost-effective way to help inform future policy and operational systems," says the University's Dr. Roland Leigh. "There is no doubt electric cars are the future." – Nissan's Andy Palmer Nissan is exploring the idea of taking its Leaf EV to India, but a lack of charging options is an obstacle. According to Nissan's chief planning officer Andy Palmer, "There is no doubt electric cars are the future. The product is there, what we need is infrastructure. Charging is a big challenge." Though Nissan stopped short of saying it (this time), this could possibly mean working with Mahindra, which said it is open to collaborating with other companies concerning EVs. The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan will get over $2 billion in funding, and some of that will go toward creating a charging infrastructure (you hear that, Nissan?). Porsche 918 Spyder recalled over bad wiring harness

An investigation of customer concerns has led to a global recall of the Porsche 918 Spyder, including 223 units in North America. The carmaker said that a carbon fiber component can damage a radiator fan wiring harness, so it is contacting owners directly to have their cars brought in for a service inspection. The issue affects cars built through the end of April 2015; cars built after that use a revised design. Dealers will remount the wiring harness, a process that should take half a day. Porsche has issued a global recall for 918 Spyder models that have already been delivered. This precautionary recall for a service inspection affects 223 vehicles in the United States. This is because the electric wiring harness for a radiator fan in vehicles manufactured up until the end of April 2015 could be damaged by a carbon-fiber component. The wiring harness will be examined and optimally remounted in the work shop. The cause was identified following a detailed examination of inquiries. Corrective measures have subsequently been taken in manufacturing. The owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted directly by Porsche Cars North America. The service visit, which will be free of charge, will be arranged as quickly as possible and the inspection will likely require the vehicle to be left in the shop for half a day. Evo makes the case for the world's best driving road in Majorca

What good is a sports car if you haven't got a great place to drive it? It's a common refrain that we've heard time and time again. But few are as familiar with the problem as they are in the UK, where the number of people, cars on the road and traffic cameras keep growing to conspire against the joy of driving. Leave it to Evo, then, to depart in search of the greatest driving road in the world.
It's a pursuit that's taken the British car mag across Europe, most recently to Romania's Carpathian Mountains where it added the Transalpina Pass to its short list. But its latest journey has taken Evo to the Spanish island of Majorca, where Henry Catchpole found not one, but two spectacular driving roads from behind the wheel of the new Porsche Boxster GTS. We could drone on about the smooth, empty ribbons of twisting tarmac with excellent visibility and panoramic vistas... but you really want to see the video for yourself.
